As you thumb through the pages of the '63 LION, it is the hope of the Annual Staff that your dreams of the future and your memories of the past may mingle to bring many pleasant moments today. Now join us in our space ship and go with us as we travel through the school year of 1962-63. Z5aMutQe Bettye Carlisle, '63 Editor Paige 4 Dear Students: The Space Age is truly the age in which we are living. The space revolution is of such vital importance, of great dimensions, and is developing at such a rapid pace that it makes extra demands upon our mental, emotional, physical, and financial capabilities. It is not possible for .us to imagine the changes that are taking place. Our need to lead in space exploration is not merely a matter of space survival, it is not simply the result of a normal impulse to surpass our competitors, nor is it the results of a selfish desire for the yet undreamed of conveniences and luxuries which the mas- tering of space technology can create. It arises from a broader and nobler purpose which has existed in the hearts and minds of people since the first human thought occurred --the desire for fulfillment of the ultimate destiny of mankind Today's challenge must be met today. Now more than ever we need to develop the intellectual resources of our people to the fullest. It is my hope that the students of Kaufman High School will realize this today, and tomorrow as you travel through the space of Life you will be pre- pared to meet the many challenges. Sincerely yours, 4 I Jimmy Phillips Superintendent B an ml 'T 'Vials M FSEQESEESAW -nweeemlbgg,Qn'... About one hundred miles from earth stands the invisible and rather arbitrary boundary where the earth's atmosphere ends and the vast reaches of airless space be- gin. Space has always contained the whirling planetsg the blue and yellow, white and red stars, gas and dust, meteorites, asteroids and radiation. Today it contains one more--the work of man. In 1958 the national Aeronautics and Space Administration was born. An act of Congress authorized this new agency to direct all aeronautics and space activities. Thus a new era was born, which will eventually lead to a completely new way of life. It is just a matter of a few years until we will have explored the moon and from there a short step to further space travel to other planets. The purpose of Kaufman High School is to offer an educational program that will motivate the students to acquire the tools of learning and the basic skills and attitudes essential to functioning in this modern space age society. It is my sincere hope that each of you will do everything possible to become pre- pared through education to meet the challenge of this new space age way of life. Sincerely, zu 25? 712223640416 W. B. Page 16 Dallas: Band 1 PROPHECY As time has marched on, the world has progressed and great achievements have been made. Recently, the first community was established on the moon. Among the population living in this glass covered town, the leading citizens are the Seniors of '63, As visitors to this town, our tour was conducted by Mayor Kenneth Kelly. In making our journey, the first stop was to the City Hall to visit the ambitious Sammy Pendley, who is now head janitor there. We saw the stenographers, Patricia Roberts and Martha Cauthern working happily in their new world. When we left, the Moon Monitor was our next stop where we met its lovely editor, Janelle Callan. Her paper, we found, to be in capable hands, as the Sports editor was Bobby Lane and the Women's section was managed by Judy Abbott. From the Monitor we proceeded down the street to the Pechal Bros. Feed Store owned by Frankie and Johnny Pechal. As we walked around inside, we saw manager Ronnie Tyl loading some feed on a truck headed for the BR Ranch owned by partners Rita Blanton and Bob Tinsley. Rita and Bob had recently won first place at the Harvest Earth Fair for their extraordinary Lunar Bull. We continued our tour and next visited the hospital. Receptionist, Peggy Walker, greeted us, and we were directed to the Soda Shop to relax and drink a malt. While here, we were served Satellite Sodas and Moon Malts by Barbara Hatchel and as we sat relaxing, the high school coach, James Spence limped by. Nurses, Georgia Het- mer and Judy Howell, were in the next booth. Dr. Ray Hall and head nurse Frances Rodriguez came in and joined us. In our conversation, they announced that Jamie Rand had won the Mobel Prize for the invention of the Moon- mobile. Mechanics Steve Archer and Johnny Bankston were also working on this type of car. Dr. Hall told of the recent success of four girls: Kay Myatt, Glenda Nalls, Linda Garn, and Marilyn Dees. These lovely girls had joined in the ownership of The Four night club, where they also served as performers. Kay Glenda, and Linda twirled their batons and Marilyn did the twist. Once a month, their special guest was Linda Norman, a famed vocalist, who had just released Shine on Harvest Earth and Earth River . Linda's success has been aided by her agent Roy Gardner. We paid the cashier, George Bailey, for our malts, and said good -by to the doctor and nurses. We left the hospital and proceeded toward the stores in town. Down the street, we saw Adair's Grocery Store on our left, owned by Grady Adair. Next was Duke and Ayres with Mary Baker Holcomb as the new manager. On the same street was the Beauty Bubble Beauty Shop operated by Gloria Bowman. Evelyn Pechal and Eva Flowers Hailey assisted Gloria in hair styling. Our last stop was made at the great Chemical Research Foundation where Brenda Melton was secretary to chemists, David Whittenburg and Johnny Knoerr. They were trying to find a way to grow vegetation on the Moon. We next went to the office of the very efficient Bettye Carlisle who was general manager of the Foundation. Hustle and bustle were in the air. It seemed as if Bettye had lost something and was searching for it. We went into the chemistry lab next door and found Dr. Larry Barnes frantically working on some plans which he changed everyday. We watched in silence and then were shocked when we found that the formulas and plans explaining how to return to Earth had been lost. Page 17 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: We, the Senior Class of 1963, being of sound but fatigued minds, happy spirits, and realizing that soon we shall be graduating from our home of six years, do herewith and hereupon, draw up, declare and publish this, our last will and testament, thereby revoking and making null and void all previous wills of testament published by us and all codicils, supplements, and agenda to such. PART I To the Junior Class, we bequeath our abused privileges, unrecognized dignity, depleted treasury, un- discovered talents, and one rock-laden parking lot. PART II Bequests made by the individuals of the Senior Class: JUDY ABBOTT leaves to CAROLYN WALKER her trips to Seagoville and her knack of staying in trouble. GRADY ADAIR sadly passes on one worn-out bookkeeping set which is to be divided equally between LINA PENN and PAT GARN. STEVE ARCHER proudly leaves his weak eyes and even weaker heart to JERRY MCDONALD. Better make the best of 'em. MARY BAKER HOLCOMB leaves her quiet mannerisms to DAVID KENNEDY. GEORGE BAILEY bestows his extremely late hours and wild rides on Saturday night to JIMMY Sl-IEHEE. JOHNNY BANKSTON transmits to RONNIE FORTNER his seven girl friends and Mr. Neal's Algebra II class. LARRY BARNES leaves to JIM McDOWELL his beloved physics book and the knowledge that Jim should have better luck with it. RITA BLANTON bequeaths her well-worn chemistry book and test tubes to ANN PILCHER and CAROLE CAMPBELL To HOPE THOMPSON, GLORIA BOWMAN leaves her fantastic hair dos and her ability to get along with the boys from Lone Star.
