Kaufman City Schools, pressing toward the very highest in main- tenance, attainment, and achievement, has steered a straight' course, persistent and con- sistent in plans for the care and development of healthy minds in healthy bodies. Special emphasis has been placed upon the education of special children, that education including screening for speech and hearing defects with instruction and training for these children in special courses designed for improvement and correction. Audio-visual equipment has been added for instruction, training, and enjoyment of all children. Driver education, individual and group instruction in band music, and choral training have been made parts of the ever-changing curriculum, while physical training for every child' now supplements his academic, vocational, and elective subjects. The school plant, enlarged by the addition of two buildings, now consists of eight well-equipped buildings. The faculty, likewise, has been increased by, three special teachers. Kaufman Schools are in step and on the march, alert to the challenge publicized in the remotest parts of our state that Texas school children must have superior edu- cational advantages. Kaufman youth deserves, must and will have the best which the state and local authorities can afford. Not least among Kaufman's latest additions is the football championship of District 17 A. Congratulations, Lions of 1949! May your championship in this realm of sports ever inspire you, all who have shared the joys of victory with you, and those who follow you to excel through physical well-being, mental health, moral and spiritual strength. Congratulations, Kaufman teachers, pupils, parents, and Board of Education. With dreams of the past come true, let us-continue to dream - thereby keeping our schools as modern and progressive as the bright hope of a beautiful tomorrow. Ben B. On August 28, they left for a week of training at Camp Tejas. On September 9, three days after the beginning of school, the Lions rolled over the Canton Eagles to the tune of 32-0, but it was plain to see that a lot of polishing was needed. The Lions had greatly improved the following Friday night when they stepped into the limelight with another 32-0 win over the Woodrow Wilson B team. The Lions, now showing great progress and smoothness, pushed the mighty Mesquite Skeeters into the shadows with another 32-0 score. Pushed on with the thought of being District Champs, the K.H.S. Lions tied into the Rockwall Yellow jackets and left them with the short end of the score 26-6, their first conference opponents. A game with Forney the next week resulted in an- other Lion victory 39-0. Kaufman prepared for the second conference game with Royse City. The Lions journeyed there, and, when ready to leave for home, they had a great advantage over the Bulldogs 24-0. This game was a stepping stone to the game to follow. The Lions met the long awaited Plano Wildcats with revenge in their eyes and tamed the Cats with a smashing victory 57-0. The following week the Lions met the Athens Hornets and pulled their stingers completely out 39-6. At this point the Lions found themselves in a tie with their arch rivals, the Terrell Tigers - for the District Championship. After two weeks of hard practice, the Lions met the Tigers at Memorial Stadium, November 18. After a hard, exciting two hours of fine football, the Kaufman Lions pushed the Tigers way out of line 40-O. This climaxed the District 17A Championship for Kaufman. Being the 17A Champs, the Lions prepared to throw the 18A Champs, the Grand Saline Indians, out of running for bi-district. In the game that followed, the Lions, after having been severely weakened by injuries, lost a hard luck game to the furious and wild Indians in the final seconds of the game. The game ended with a score of 20-13. This disheartening loss ended the Lions' grid schedule, but, in consolation, they had the joy of being the only K.H.S. grid team to win District 17A since 1934. 1 , ' ' L 9 'R 1 -u --- IIIT .-.:' Juli? And so the gridiron of high school is left victoriously as some students leave for a few months time out, and graduates go into a huddle to plan for the future. One looks back to fumbles and to the happy triumphant touchdowns. All were sometimes pushed back, but many surged forward again. Penalties deserved and undeserved were doled out, but these penalties were balanced. by the yardage gained. Trophies were lost, and trophies were gained. Some are glad that the game is overg some are sorryg yet all enjoyed the playing of it. 11 X- ' f Vmu- scHooL ANNUALS E ' ' - 'F Q i' - A A I . if I ' , ..
