K MRS. .l. E. BOULIGNY Special Education Special Education Special Education is that form of education designed to meet the needs of educable children who cannot function in the regular classes of the public school without provision of services additional to or different from those provided in the regular program. This is the first year we have had Special Education as an official part of our school program. Because of the number of students in the class we have begun with a half-unit, meaning that the students attend their special class for a half-day. Under the present set-up the children attend regular class during the other half of the day while their Special Education teacher is engaged in teaching classes in another part of the school system. The children in this class are learning to read, Write and use other basic language and number skills at their individual rate of ability and development. This is ac- complished best when they are not competing with students who learn at a more rapid rate. Their social adjustment is promoted by their participation in regular classroom activities in the afternoon. Special Education is one more step toward meeting the individual needs of the children of our community. .. .,1-. ,VW ix '- 14, - ,V -'r -- .
