Children in Kindergarten go to school only one-half day. They are divided into a morning group and an afternoon group. At mid- term they exchange time. The morning group goes in the after- noon and the afternoon goes in the morning. These children had many nice treats by their room mothers with Mrs. H. E. Hood as chairman. Sharon Youngblood and Sandra Haskett are showing these children how to decorate cookies in the Homemaking Department. Others you will see on page 28 and 30. 9 Kinder arten MRS. W. L. ALLISON'S The yearis passing included lots of learning and fun. For Valentinels Day each child had a post office box and at party time he opened it to find it filled with Valentines from his friends and other goodies. ' One activity that showed overwhelm- ing enthusiasm in the fall was the collecting of rocks, leaves, and seeds. Other activities were watching tadpoles, rabbits, puppies and other pets. The first money from P.T.A., for most mothers present, went to purchase an aquarium and some fish. This provided opportunity for the children to write about their observations and gave them responsibility to care for the fish. Room mother chairman for the year was lVlrs. Rogers Hoyt. iq. They had come to learn reading, 'riting and 'rithme- tic. Twenty-one starry-eyed children waved good-by with a look of satisfaction on their faces on the last day of school. As a whole, they felt their mission was accomplished. And they believed the gaining of these basic skills the most im- portant thing they did! Besides this, they carried on an interesting science program, making beautiful individual collections of rocks, leaves, seeds, shells and butterflies. These children also enjoyed the usual round of party and refreshments with Mrs. Gordon Fussell as room mother chair- man. Visitors who came by to say hello helped us enjoyg the gingerbread family, the musical Christmas tree, public school week, the egg tree, our stick horses, the setting hen, our tall grass zoo and our room award money. These stick horses were made and rode to the rodeo grounds to see the animals on exhibit in the barns. Turn to page 29 to see 2 other pictures. BOULIGNY Special Education Special Education Special Education is that form of education designed to meet the needs of educable children who cannot function in the regular classes of the public school without provision of services additional to or different from those provided in the regular program. This is the first year we have had Special Education as an official part of our school program. Because of the number of students in the class we have begun with a half-unit, meaning that the students attend their special class for a half-day. Under the present set-up the children attend regular class during the other half of the day while their Special Education teacher is engaged in teaching classes in another part of the school system. The children in this class are learning to read, Write and use other basic language and number skills at their individual rate of ability and development. This is ac- complished best when they are not competing with students who learn at a more rapid rate. Their social adjustment is promoted by their participation in regular classroom activities in the afternoon. Special Education is one more step toward meeting the individual needs of the children of our community. .. .,1-. ,VW ix '- 14, - ,V -'r -- . During the first weeks of school the eighth grade gave the seventh grade a party to climax Courtesy Week f See page 455. The object of Courtesy Week was to sharpen everyoneas manners for the coming year. Posters were made and displayed reminding everyone to be on guard. Eight C received a considerable number of honors this year. These honors have ranged from brains to brawn to beauty CU, or perhaps we should say lung-power. Class elections saw Danny Stanwood elected president, and Ronald Scott as vice-president. The new Junior High Student Council also was headed by Ronald Scott who conducted a vigorous pre-election campaign. The wizard of one class, Mike Fielder, competed in UIL ready writing, taking third place. Under the brawn section Roanld Scott and Martin Haskett were named co-captains of the football team. Karen Whitson, as head cheerleader, used her lung pbwer to cheer on the team. Ronald Scott broke his arm. Two very successful social events were had during this year. The first was the hayride which was loads of fun in spite of the rain . . . and what happened to James, glasses? The boys probably won't play Wink,' again after beirig treated so roughly by the girls. The second was the swimming party- this was really a big splash! Everyone enjoyed the swim and were all anxious to get those hot dogs after an hour in the pool. There were all kinds of diving exhibitions and it would be hard to say who took first prize. The trip to KHOU televisylon station was exciting. The station was looked over and two live shows were seen-a news broadcast and the Madge Conner Show. On the way back a stop in Memorial Park was for lunch. Ruth Metzger broke her second toe. Barbara Fiebig read 94 books. Our basketball team won trlvo trophies. Linda Brown won majoretfe. Peggy Cooper won 2nd in number sense. Others who entered were: Jane Drake, Tony Rylander, Mike Fielder, Linda Brown, and Susan Highrabedian. Beverly Polan won two gpld keys in art-Phyllis Barrett placed 2nd in art at Regional. These weren't all the actiwities that went on during the school year but these were memorable . . Oh, yes! Both seventh and eighth grades were in favor by a majority vote. The president, however, would come from the eighth grade. Each eighth grade home room nominated a candidate for the office of president. The nominees were Susan Highrabedian, Tony Rylander, and Ronald Scott. After a great display of posters and ribbons by all candidates, Ronald Scott was elected president. Mr. J. E. Bouligny was sponsor. Ronald Scott President Courtesy Week During the week of September 19-23, the eighth grade sponsored a Courtesy Week for the junior high.
