DEAR GIRLS : You face a world so different from any we have known, a world so new and full of complicated situations that it is diiiicult for me to think of you as a part of it all. It is with a certain chill upon my heart that I see you entering into the problems that await you in this new and unexplored domain. Perhaps I have come to belong to an older regime, but the tenets I have tried to teach you have worn well throughout the long cycles of many changes and upheavals. I have tried to teach you the power and the beauty of patience, of content, of courage, of faith, of loyalty, of simplicity and of sincerity. It is by the preservation of the ideals among its women, throughout all the catastrophes war and its attendant train have brought, that nations have survived, have builded anew upon the ruins of the old a broader, better state. Because this is true, more than ever now than in all the years of its growing greatness, should the young women of our beloved land stand as the symbols of that better, higher life, so that they may, in sincerity and simplicity, meet and guide the destinies of those who come from the horrors of trench, and sea, and sky. These Soldiers of Freedom may never seem young or gay again, for they have seen the soul of a nation destroyed through arrogance and self-deceitg they have come back to us out of the Valley of the Shadow of Death. They will need your courage, your faith, your sweet content, your sincerity to make for them a world where they may learn to forget the sorrows they have known. That strength may be given to you to bear your part in this great regeneration of the world is my earnest prayer. Always with deep affection, . Your friend, l6j Works and Days
