It is with a certain chill upon my heart that I see you entering into the problems that await you in this new and unexplored domain. Perhaps I have come to belong to an older regime, but the tenets I have tried to teach you have worn well throughout the long cycles of many changes and upheavals. I have tried to teach you the power and the beauty of patience, of content, of courage, of faith, of loyalty, of simplicity and of sincerity. It is by the preservation of the ideals among its women, throughout all the catastrophes war and its attendant train have brought, that nations have survived, have builded anew upon the ruins of the old a broader, better state. Because this is true, more than ever now than in all the years of its growing greatness, should the young women of our beloved land stand as the symbols of that better, higher life, so that they may, in sincerity and simplicity, meet and guide the destinies of those who come from the horrors of trench, and sea, and sky. These Soldiers of Freedom may never seem young or gay again, for they have seen the soul of a nation destroyed through arrogance and self-deceitg they have come back to us out of the Valley of the Shadow of Death. They will need your courage, your faith, your sweet content, your sincerity to make for them a world where they may learn to forget the sorrows they have known. That strength may be given to you to bear your part in this great regeneration of the world is my earnest prayer. Always with deep affection, . To the few of us gathered about the circle of Miss Burke's love the building seemed amply large to house us all. Year by year we grew, however. In 1911 Margaret and Frances Lent joined us, by 1912 we had gained Helen Lichtenberg and Lucia. In 1913 the school was enlarged for the first time, and as we had more room, we added Carol and Katharine was this, in a measure, to our group. GERALDINE GRACE '19 XVith the coming of peace the high tension that has held us up through this troubled year has abated a little, and with this abatement has come to us, and to our efforts and achievements, a tendency to relax. Girls, don't relax! Don't fall back! A year ago we were held together by a common bond-the determined purpose of every one of us to give all she could in point of service to the cause that then was paramount-the winning of the War. Now there is before us a purpose as great, as compelling, as momentous, and of far greater concern to humanity-the Winning of Peace. The one meant saving the lives and maintaining the purposes of our armies, the other means bringing happiness, contentment, and security to the World. Altogether, the last year has been one of many trials. It was filled with excitement and distraction, and then, to aggravate it all, we were quarantined. Our school Work was broken into and disarranged, and to Work, already hard, Was added the further burden of catching up. But consider What Miss Burke and the teachers have done for us during these months of hard Work. They have helped us to make up lost work, lVorks and Days l27l they have thought and planned and begged and demanded that we make good-and we have made good. Today we are just as far along on the schedule of work as we should have been had we come to school every day during the month of quarantine. Of course, we made the record that brought us to this point, but the incentive and inspiration behind our efforts were what enabled us to make that record. Our deepest gratitude and sincerest appreciation are due to Miss Burke, the Faculty and the Ofiice for the patient and untiring efforts they so willingly and so gladly gave to us. This personal interest taken in each girl by the teachers is some- thing that has always characterized Miss Burke's. It is the result and interpretation of that wonderful spirit of mutual affection that is best known under the name of the Burke Spirit. This spirit we must keep as pure and as vivid as it has always been, and in thus keeping the faith we cannot fail in the part that is ours. Our athletics have been neglected and set aside by the press of work, our interclass affairs have naturally suffered, and our school activities, until recently, were greatly curtailed, but our school spirit has come through the trial. Let us continue building as those before us have built! The emblem of our school spirit is the redwood, upright and strong. Let us see that this spirit maintains its integrity and its strength, and in doing so we shall do our share in upholding our part of the inspiration that will win peace for all. ACKNOWTEDGMENT To all the Faculty, and to all the girls, whose ready response to our every demand has helped to make this Annual possible, we are indebted. 'B THE DANCING LADY OF THE POOL In tl1e first place, the gardener was worried. He was standing in the courtyard trying to remember which day it was that he had planted those pansy seeds. At last he gave it up in despair. He could not remember. Each little plant was trying to help him, for they all realized his trouble. One little redwood said, Wasn't it a week ago Wednesday? No, replied the gardener, that was the day I transplanted those two ferns. Yes, cried the ferns, that was the day he took us from the hot sunlight and placed us here, in the lovely cool shade. Wasn't i't last Wednesday? asked the heather. No, called three little green shoots, that was the day he planted us. These last three speakers were so tiny you couldn't tell what they were. Suddenly the fountain sprang into life, and, with a gurgling splash, she picked up her skirts and began to dance a merry waltz in the sunlight. I know what day it was, she cried with glee. What day? the gardener implored. The day little Connie tripped on my train andfell into my arms and got all wet, sang the fountain. Right! cried the ferns. Right ! called the redwoods. And the gardener was so delighted that he forgot to learn the real day. But the pansies didn't mind about dates. They came slowly up into the sunlight and now, robed in liveries of purple, green and gold they stood like little pages, bearing the train of the Dancing Lady of the Pool. BARBARA BENJAMIN, '22, Works and Days I29l A MODERN GARETH HE last son of Thomas Balfour stood in the doorway of his -1 X father's store, looking down Fifth Avenue at tl1e continu- 2 N ous stream of khaki-clothed boys. A deep flush crept over A1 his face, his hand tightened its grip on the door knob, he YQX - ff, was bitterly aware of the two stars displayed by the 12333 service flag on the glass. Q' s H. t'And why isn't there a star for me?', he asked himself, il ' . but he knew the answer too well-he was not of age, he was the youngest, he was the baby. While he stood there a soldier passed with the crowd-one whose face showed anything but patriotic enthusiasm. He looks like a man who's been drafted,'? he thought, and who's afraid to go. And I can't go when I dream of it night and day. A soft hand touched his arm. He turned to find mother's sweet, old face, with that look of love, pride, understanding and fear he knew so well. Witliout speaking, he leaned over and kissed her lightly. Then, slipping his arm around l1er shoulders, they walked slowly through the store to his father's study. 'She seated herself by the open window. So I'm still your baby? he questioned, half teasing, and closing the door he came over to her. She nodded. And do you still love that child? This time she smiled. There was little need of speech between them. t'Then won't you grant your child that favor, mother? He pointed through the open window to a passing aviator, with the other he caught the little lady's tiny gloved hand. She looked up at him beseechingly. t'Oh, my darling, my dearest son, she answered piteously. The Government surely doesn't need all my sons, not you, my boy. See, dear heart, your father's not young now, he must retire soon. Who else is there to carry on this business he has made? You are so young, so bright, so capable now. We depend on you. You must look after us in our old age. Stay, be my comfort. She was openly sobbing now. Oh, when I think of all the dreadful things that could happen to our boys I haven't the strength to offer you as well. Oh, stay, my dearest, you are still more boy than man. Oh, mother, if you only knew how .hard you are making it for me, he exclaimed, almost crying himself. And, mother, he whispered shyly, there is fame, too ! But, my darling, you are so young. VVait at least until you're twenty-one. This war will not be over so soon, they'll need you later on. No, mother, there's where you're wrong, he urged. They need me now. Why, if there had only been more men at Soissons could it have fallen? No, of course, not, he cried. He went on pitilessly: Would you have me stay here in luxury when the women and little children of Belgium are starving and dying? Would you have me handling greenbacks when my brothers are loading rifles? No, I know you wouldn't, mother, for you know how I want to go! The little old lady, feeling her arguments weaken and fail, looked once at her boy. You want to be an aviator, my son? she said steadily. Yes, mother, he answered quickly, beginning to smile. If you go into the aviation now you cannot expect to gain an oHicer's commission without rising from the ranks. You know that you are too young, and your brothers are both captains. She argued vainly. He knew she had given in to her darling. Is that all, mother, is that all? If that's all- he hesitated. Her head sank in submission. He was at her side, his arms about her. He kissed her a dozen times before he rose, radiant, to rush out of the room. The big sign, Enlist Here. seemed to beckon and wave to him from the street. Slowly the little mother rose from the chair, her eyes dim, her hands unsteady, the voice of her boy still ringing in her ears. Then her con- fused brain caught hold of the music, it rang with a new meaning. Yes, my boy is going over, she said smiling, a modern Gareth. MARJORIE L. EATON, '20. CAROL ANDREW, '19, Works and Days l37 ON THE GAME OF TENNIS Tennis is often played, and seemingly enjoyed, by those who have no excuse for not knowing better. The net is strung up to prevent the players from actually assaulting one another, the idea of the game being to propel the overgrown moth balls across this with the aid of a large, well-ventilated waffle iron. When ladies play tennis they giggle, adjust their skirts and lose both hairpins and the score. There is no sight more terrible than that of a woman struggling in the deadly throes of the tennis germ. At a distance tennis bears a close resemblance to the chase of a mad dogg not so exhilarating as the latter, it affords more frequent opportunities for replenishing the breath. When you have finished the game, hide all the balls so that no one else can play. This will win you many friends when you leave the country for good. But the Club has sown its seeds, and we hope-- oh, how we hope !-that the seeds will sprout as success- X fully as though the Botany Class had them in charge! its earliest stages was the Parable of the Wise and the Foolish Virgins. Perhaps we builded better than we knew, for the calm serenity of those who were prepared with lamps a-light for the coming of the Bridegroom rivaled the anguish displayed by those who had naught of the midnight fuel! VVe seemed but those playing their parts, strutting their brief hour, wan- dering in the realms of wigs and patches, classic robes and shining armor, but we were but true to life. Among us are those wise and those foolish virgins! In conscious rectitude they pass us in the hall, those virtuous ones who have burned the midnight oil and still have had the thrift to repair frequently to the wells of intellectual oil spouting in the realms of afternoon drill. They pass us, and they pity us, but out of their rich store of surplus credit they may not furnish us forth. They fear not the coming of the Bridegroomg he may appear at any time-be it Geometry, Chemistry, History, Latin, English-whatever may bestead, their lamps are all filled up and shining brightly. He may come from Berkeley or from Stanford or from Harvard or from Yale, they care not. He may be an A. B., an A. B. C. or an X. Y. Z. He may be all these things and more, they fear not-they are ready! But there are others! Day by day we wait his coming! The sound of a masculine voice, the sight of a masculine hat in the hall, send us shivering to the outer dark of the lowest deeps of the back yard. We have toiled not, neither have we spun, we have not garnered the oil, we have not polished the gold, nor the silver, nor the bronze, or what- ever those lamps of the Bible were made of. We have come not to the wells that were overfiowing in our very sight upon the highway, and so do we pray that he, the Awful One, may come not, at least not now--- in the guise of the Professor! But, perhaps, we foolish ones may be in line to greet another type of Bridegroom when he cometh forth, while those thrifty ones so envied of us now, may then have their eyes so bent upon their books that they see him not. rf N 52 . CAROL ANDREW, '19. 441 Works and Dany-9 F u i I r LECTURES FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1918 Mrs. Whiffen, noblest old lady on the American Stage, visited us today. Hers is a sweet, motherly charm which did not fail to captivate us from the moment of her appearance. She told us of her long and useful career, with a plentiful seasoning of anecdotes. A , MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 1918 Canon Cabanel, Head Chaplain of the French Blue Devils, and more recently attached to the French High Commissionto the United States, spoke to us of the wonderful way in which Franco-American amity has been fostered through the long years since the days of Wash- ington and Lafayette, and particularly since the beginning of the World VVar. His forceful and eloquent words all but moved us to tears. FRIDAY, JANUARY 24, 1919 Baroness Huard brought to us, in her talk, some of tl1e thrills, some of the tears, some of -the life tragedies which were left in the train of the enemy hordes wlIiclI invaded the peaceful countrysides of France. It has been the rare privilege of Madame Huard, the American-born wife of France's foremost camoufleur, to conduct a hospital for French wounded, and she gave us the benefit of some of the dramatic scenes that she had witnessed as an Angel of Mercy. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1919 By invitation of the Academic H Class, Mrs. Darling, owner of Baldy of Nome, author and traveler, spoke at the party tendered by them to the Seniors and Postgraduates. We were greatly surprised and interested to hear of the things that Mrs. Darling's famous Alaskan Huskies have accomplished on the French Field of Honor. She also told us of life in the North and brought to us a realization of what the dog means in Alaska. FRIDAY, MARCH 14, 1919 Charles B. Hutchins, The Bird Man, provided one of the most pleasant diversions of the school year. Mr. Hutchins possesses a remarkable faculty-that of imitating the better-known songbirds in so natural a manner that, by closing one's eyes, one could easily imagine that the unseen denizens of the leafy forest were lilting in their sweet- est strains. He also drew tlIe birds in colored chalks and left the pictures with us as souvenirs of a very delightful hour. l461 Works and Days THURSDAY, APRIL 10, 1919 A memorable day for us, that hereafter shall be full of tenderest memories. Professor Henry Morse Stephens spoke to us-on Joan of Arc+our school patron. As he stood in the patio talking of the Maid and of the beauty of her service, the sunlight fell softly upon him, and he seemed especially near and dear to us, one of our best beloved traditions. We feel that we had almost the last of his teaching, and in reverent affection always, shall we hold this hour with him. WEDNESDAY, MAY 7, 1919 Brother Leo, head of the Department of English of St. Mary's College, Oakland, is doing us a distinct honor by consenting to inter- pret for us the immortal quatrains of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyamf' He will give us a new insight into the philosophy of Persia, and the address will be a valuable addition to the interesting discourses that were provided for us by Miss Burke during the year. Stage Manager The club had planned to give in pantomime the stories of Ruth, The Seven Wise and the Seven Foolish Virgins and the Prodigal Son, but owing to the enforced quarantine we were obliged to abandon the plans. In the near future the Dramatic Club hopes to present a play adapted from one of the old classics. We are sure that it will be a great success and are all looking forward with much interest to this first performance. Dramatics is a school activity and membership is open to all. Much interest has been shown in the work of the club. Works and Days I47l THE SCHOOL ORCHESTRA The orchestra, under the direction of Miss Sherwood, is composed this year of two violins, a guitar, mandolins and ukuleles. The players are Adelaide Griffith, Nannette Dozier, Justine and Lucile McGrath, Jean Howard, Gladys Muscio, Helen Deamer, Margaret Fuller, Elizabeth Atkinson and Dorothy Meyer. ' EURHYTHMIC DANCING The classes in Eurhythmic dancing meet every Monday afternoon in the 'fplayroomj' under the able direction of Miss Milliette. One derives both mental and physical profit from this exercise, which improves the memory and develops concentration as well as providing good exercise for the students. It particularly develops the sense of rhythm and time. We hope that this course will be continued and that the classes will increase in number as the girls learn to appreciate the strength and grace of bearing, as well as muscle control, this exercise gives. . First Class-Gladys Muscio, Margaret Cheney, Evelyn McGaw, Clara Ballentine. Second Class-Frances Pringle, Isabel Sherman, Katherine Burke, Stella Stevens. Third Class-Anna Jayne, Elizabeth McCain, Phyllis Smith, Frances Smith. TENNIS Our tennis for this year was somewhat interfered with by the influ- enza epidemic, but less so than might have been expected. The school tournament, which ordinarily is a pre-Christmas event, was not played off until January. This tournament was won by Margaret Cheney, who received the beautiful silver cup donated by Adelaide GrilTith,- our tennis manager. Our first tournament with an outside school was on the 15th of February, with Miss Ransom's, at the California Lawn Tennis Club. First singles played by Florence Martin and Margaret Cheney, the former winning by the score, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. First doubles won by Patience Winchester and Dorothy Alexander from Marie Louise Potter and Kathryn Chace, who substituted for Betsy Payne, by the score of 6-2, 6-2. In second singles Ruth Johnston defeated Frances Revett, I-181 Works and Days 6-1, 6-1. Frances showed a splendid school spirit in playing this game, as she had had no practice whatever and had not expected to play, but was willing to fill in rather than default the match. Second doubles was won by the Aire twins from Louise Porter and Katherine Burke by the score, 6-2, 6-1. As it was a beautiful day, and the first of our season's activities, a large number of the girls came out to watch the games and to enjoy luncheon at the school afterward. The meal was served out in the lower yard at small tables, set under gay-colored umbrellas. We have been unable as yet to arrange another tournament but hope to hold one with Castilleja at Palo Alto. Our other matches before the final one at Claremont, on the 9th and 10th of May, are to be with Miss Head's, on the 26th of April, and with Miss Harker's, on the 3d of May. Then comes the final big tournament at Claremont, when all the schools compete. There we must do our best to hold our own and continue to keep the two cups we now hold in the school. We all wish our teams every success in gaining the coveted prizes. , BASKETBALL Our basketball this year has not been a great success, though Miss Anne Hamilton has done all she could with the girls. Most of the energy necessary to success seems concentrated in the captain, Francesca. Bluebird Know you the song that the bluebird is singing Out in the pine tree where he is swinging? Brave little fellow! the skies may be dreary, Nothing cares he while his heart is so cheery. The bluebird is the sign of .happiness. There are two kinds-the mountain and the western bluebird. The mountain bluebird is tl1e prettier of the two. California and I once were going to the mountains and we decided to find the bluebird because we had heard so much about him. After we were there a while we began to give up, as tl1e bluebird knows how to play hide and seek. Every once in a while we would hear his happy song of three notes at a time. One day when I was walking through the woods I spied something blue against the green pine, looking carefully I found it was a bluebird. He was very pretty. His breast was gray and his wings and back were turquoise blue. Another day when I was walking in the wood I saw a hole in a tree. Thinking there might be something of interest there, I started to climb up. I was almost at the hole when out flew a bluebird. I went and looked in, and there was a nest. About three-quarters of the l1ole was filled with grass and leaves. In the middle were seven little pale blue turquoise eggs. I thought I had better go away so that tl1e mother would come back. She had been screeching at me, and when I went down she Hew in. On reaching home, I told California about it. In Works and Days l5ll fifteen days we went back. The parents were not there, so we did not frighten them. In the nest we found six baby birds, one egg had not hatched. They were grayish and looked like mice. Next time we came they were grayish, streaked with white, and their wings and tails were blue. They eat grasshoppers, beetles, butterflies and worms. Their claws are very sharp, so they can climb out of their nests easily and climb tl1e bark of the tree. KATHARINE DEAHL, Int. II. I 3 l K gggigiikii 1 i li .fly I52l Works and Days PI+'usf'E'r'i'f i The salient feature of the Postgraduate Class is obviously its proficiency in the culinary art. The patent popularity of the second floor front does not rest upon the carved shoulders of the charming Chinese figure staring with so placid, almost bovine a gaze upon the trials and tribulations of school life, but rather upon the more active shoulders and capable hands of those ambitious girls who have aspired to fit themselves for domesticity by learning the gentle art of cookery, and they do learn it, their skill is manifest in far-famed doughnuts. However, there are other interests in this department. Miss Burke gives a most interesting course in Modern English, and the pupil is taught to converse With perfect ease and understanding of Ibsen and his VVhite Livered Women, VVilde and his cult of beauty, Omar Khayyam, Kismet, Galsworthy and the rest of them. Interior Decorating and Sewing still further prepare us to meet the world. And some unfortunate P. Gris are still trying to cultivate the scholarly sides of their minds. A part of the school, and yet apart from it, this department is a hard one to characterize. Unlike a concrete Academic Grade, each postgraduate has a different goal, an individual personality which is not absorbed in the school spirit and yet enters enough into it to yield a small influence, and in turn to be influenced. It is the end of that intimate school life which means so much in the life of a girl, and which nothing can replace. MARJORIE E. DUNNE, '18. Works and Days l53I 1 i Q 5 ' ' Now that the actual fighting has ceased, though tl1e tranquillity of the world is still disturbed, it is our duty as citizens of this great country to gather up the scattered remnants of civilization and to try to fit tl1e1n together again into a better and more lasting union. Let us not fall into the old ways of indulgence and selfishness, as some of us were wont to do, because these are among the first stones upon which decline is based. Is it not better instead to look toward our less fortunate brothers and sisters? Perhaps, through some very small act of kind- ness l1e or she may be buoyed up sufficiently to continue the great struggle for existence. Though the war has saddened many hearts and darkened countless homes, still there is a great deal of benefit that may be reaped from it if people thus choose. Now, more than ever, do we realize how indis- pensable education is for the making of good citizens. Undoubtedly there would be hundreds and even thousands less following in the ranks of I. XV. W. 's, Bolsheviki, anarchists and all such misguided peoples if these had tasted of the fruits of a liberal education. Would Russia be in such a state of chaos if her masses were enlightened to the extent of seeing a broad perspective of life before their eyes? The infiuence of a modern institution of learning is very far-reacl1- ing. VVe were, indeed, most fortunate to have the fine example of what womanhood should be before us in our principal and the splendid infiuence of her school. OTHER ITEMS OF INTEREST Rose Sahlein, '14, after three strenuous years of training at the University of California Hospital, will complete her course this spring. Margaret Eells, '16, Ruth McGregor, As., and Alberta Morbio, '18, are in training at Lane. Dorothy Stone gives most of her time to district nursing, settlement Work and canteen service. Margaret Barker, December, '14, Doris Kellogg, '15, Mary Freer, '14, Helen Mahone, '14, Florence Stoney, '13, Florence Burleson, December, '14, and Jean Ward, '16, have completed a very creditable service to the Red Cross through the Auxiliary which they founded and conducted here. Works and Days 1551 AT CALIFORNIA Sara d'Ancona, '15, has delighted our souls by winning Phi Beta Kappa at California. She is also the only woman reader in history under Professor Henry Morse Stephens, an honor which we value inestimably. Valerie Arnold, '16, is a reader in philosophy, and has done notable work in this and in mathematics. Elizabeth Terry, '17, has done strong work, and last year held the scholarship cup of' her sorority. Our other girls-Margaret Monroe, '14, Martha Stanyan, '15, Marjorie Lovegrove, '17, and Margaret Patrick, '18-are all doing very good work. , AT STANFORD Lois Eldredge, '14, is specializing along lines of chemical research. Doris Crane and Rosalee Grunbaum, '18, are holding up the traditions of the Burke girls and are doing work that is creditable to our standards. . AT MILLS Katherine Simon, '15, has transferred from California, and as a junior alt Mills is distinguishing herself by splendid scholarship. Eleanor Klink, Neva Muscio, Emilie Greenebaum, all of '17, are doing good work. AT VASSAR Carroll Cambron, '16, is a sophomore, and we hope to have Lucia Sherman, '19, as a freshman there this next year. Down through the Academic Department we are glad to feel that there are others listed. AT SMITH Dorothy Rolph, '17, is for the second time on the honor roll. On Wednesday, May 28th, at the school, we are to have the Seniors of 1919 as our guests at the annual dinner, to which we all look forward with such pleasant anticipation. Our deepest sympathy iswextended to one of our dear schoolmates, Erminie Calvin Austin, As., whose husband, Major James Austin, made the supreme sacrifice. He died in action on the Field of Honor, in October, 1918, while defending his flag in the cause of Justice. She is the only one among our girls to be called upon to make this splendid offering to her country, and for that reason she will be always a special source of loving interest to us all. e It is with sorrow that we must record also the passing of our beloved first president, Dorothy Deane Morbio, '13, It is difficult to believe that a life so vivid, a personality so radiant is gone. l561 Works and Days During the influenza epidemic many of the gi1'ls went to the country, but those that stayed in town found to their surprise and relief that they were not dependent for amusement on theaters, movies or similar distractions. Soon after the reopening of school the Seniors gave the Specials a party. The affair was a great success and tl1e talent surprised both participants and auditors. A dozen geniuses were disclosed, and no one doubts that their names will be displayed before long in electric lights as an eager public clamors for admission. Gerry Grace, for instance, as a trombone player, would be an attraction forever, in spite of her appreciation toll of pitch and tone. Such excitement when the invitation to a Cabaret Show came from the Academic IH's for the Seniors! There in the Court were the tables at which the guests were seated, and as they ate the most delicious food they watched a wonderful performance. The orchestra was all that could be desired. and the dances by Gladys Scott, Marjorie Eaton and Lucile McGrath were much appreciated. There was much fun over the passing of cigars and cigarettes, which all enjoyed as they were made of chocolate. A Candy Pull, given by Academic I's for the Seniors, is another happy event for them to look back upon. The candy made was very good and there was quite a time to decide who it was that deserved the first prize. Geraldine Grace and Miss Barbara Burke were chosen as the best candy chefs. XVhen the Armenian Drive was on, the school gave a Cake and Candy Sale. The crowds that came to buy were so generous that a large sum was realized. There was much excitement the next morning when the drawing of the rattles for the large cakes took place. Annette Works and Days l571 Rolph won the first cake and Miss Beshlich, the second. Miss Burke let the cakes be cut and a cake line was immediately formed. There was much excitement for a while as the cakes were sampled. The greatest excitement at the sale was caused by -1- Qcensored by the Navyj. However, if you wish to know about it, we refer you to Frances Revett. Anyone desiring quotations on Opportunity might also ask the same party. Echoes From Opposite Corners of the Senior Boom Now let me tell you that I know my version of the story is correct. I have it from the best authority and they said- But, my dear, have you heard what she said? Oh! what I don 't know about you-you better be nice to me. I must write a poem about that- Pardon me, but if you will look on the 399th page of the encyclopedia you will see that what I say is correct. In that reference to the Bible the exact quotation is- After the 29th of May the Senior Class officers will be out of employment. May we hope to look for advertisements such as these in the newspapers: IVanted-Position by a young lady for the care of children. Much experience as to keeping order. A young lady will undertake the management of a newspaper or magazine. After much experience with assistants she prefers to do all the work herself. A capable young lady will collect bills and assessments due. Abso- lute guarantee that money will be received. Methods of extraction secret. A young lady with a pleasing personality desires a position as a private secretary. Does not object to crossing the bay, as she has formed the habit. Be sure and leave your order with Mr. Gaffney for the following books: Conversations with Luther Burbank, by Geraldine Grace. Rules for French, by Helen Deamer. I581 Works and Days How to Read with Expression, by Margaret Cheney. My Opinion of Botany, by Frances Lent. ' Seniors We Have Loved, Marie-Louise and Francesca. Educational Value of Regular Attendance, Josephine Tynan. How to Be a Good Housewife, by Cornelia Gwynn. The Art of the Acceptable Excuse fwith numerous additions and notations. Ask for the 7008th Edition. Original publication lost in antiquityl. Rolph, Sesnon 8b Muscio, Inc. Gowns and hats made to order. Most stunning models. Give your winter orders in the summer and avoid the rush. Tickets are to be sold so that the rush for seats near the radiator in the Academic III room may be stopped. Marjorie Eaton and Adrianne Sharp, known as 'tThe Dreamers, object to being in the same class. It is altogether too much of a strain on the teacher. Helen Hawkins has changed her name to Mercury since she was on the paper committee. She is the messenger of the Goddesses of the Paper. We all agree with Miss Burke that Geraldine is brilliant, but we do not quite understand why she went and had her wisdom extracted. The Siamese Family have sent quite a number of their twins to school. Perhaps you have heard of: Aileen and Gladys Siamese. Francesca and Marie-Louise Siamese. Jean and Edna Siamese. Doris and Dorothy Siamese. Frances and Geraldine Siamese. Nannette and Marjorie Siamese. Josephine and Frances Siamese. And last, but not least, Frances, Helen, Lucia and Carol Quadramese. Any pair of these twins passing in their coffins would awake and talk. No wonder that the Special English Class cannot think when they have to recite before the brilliant UU Seniors. Works and Days l591 We all miss Madame Bigorne and wish she were with us, but, like model Pollyannas, let us be glad that we have some one as nice as Miss O'Connor to take her place. We have many excellent ehauffeurs in the school, but none equals the manner in whic.h Annette backs and shifts her yellow streak. The Masquerade given by the Seniors to the other Academic girls proved to be the merriest party ever given in the school. There was no end of fun penetrating the disguises of our classmates. There was a grand march before a buffet dinner and later we danced. All agreed with the decisions of the judges when Jacqueline Keesling, in a charm- ing French vivandiere costume, was awarded first prize, and Eleanor Morgan, as the Patchwork Girl, received the prize for the most original. The luncheon given by the P. G.'s to the Class Presidents, Miss Burke and Miss Buttner, was ample proof of their efficiency in- the culinary art. They deserved all the praise they received. Slogans are wanted for Lucia Sherman's handwriting exercises. Submit your ideas at the earliest opportunity. Before this advertise- ment she was actually found committing- Lucia loves lollypopsf' - Lucia lives in London. Sherman said something shocking. If Barbara Sesnon does not stop using Sloan's Liniment on her neck there will be serious trouble in the Academic IH Class. We suggest that she keep looking straight ahead from now on. The Seniors never realized what charming children they had been until they came to school with their hair down. Several among the number were seen on their way to school and have since been flooded with letters from hair tonic companies for permission to use their pictures. Things we would like to know: What happened to the Bugles. How Virginia Hanna knows so much. WhatiLucia, Frances, Helen and Carol talk about in History. Why Academic IV French always laughs. Something Evelyn does not think adorable . Why so few girls wear hair ribbons. 1601 Works and Days fm- - ar 54. . ef r 5 Q E x M. 5 Q?
