In these times of conflict, it is the duty of each of us to be well informed. The intelligent citizen is the cornerstone of the democra- cy for which we are fighting. But only through a careful analysis of world affairs, an analysis based on wide reading, unprejudiced thinking, and a constant vigilance against the fiction that creeps into fact, can we become that intelligent citizen. lt is to one who has for long attempted to train us, here at Katharine Gibbs, in these habits of mind that we wish to express our gratitude. Dr. lohn A. Krout for eighteen years has lectured to us here. He has presented the past to us with a vigor and insight that has made it a living part of our intellectual heritage. He has thrown the light of history on our own world, our foreign and domestic policies, our leaders, our spreading battle fronts. He has dealt with day-after-tomorrow issues impartially, stimulating critical opinion in all of us. But, above all, he has taught us force and tolerance of mind. Now, about to take our place in a chaotic world, we feel that he is one of those to whom we owe whatever courage we have to fight for our rights and live our lives by a code which means freedom for all. And so, to our friend and instructor, Dr. lohn A. Krout, who has aided us so greatly, we gratefully dedicate THE PLATEN.
