In the background there were always important people who didn't get acknowledged. Mr. Mikulics and Ken Kaylor helped out greatly. Katella starters Mike Stieb, Matt Whieldon, Tod Lychkoff, Tim Dewald and Jeff Welshans huddled before their game against Marina. Katella's pre-season was a disappointment compared to last year, but the hard fighting roundballers came .home with one tournament championship in their pocket and an armful of tournament wins. Marina supplied tough competition for the Knights as they edged them in two close games, one taking away the possibilities for a Marina-Westminister Championship. At Anaheim's Convention Center, Katella topped all competition with strong playing by Jeff Welsh- ans, Tournament Co-MVP, and Matt Whieldon All-Tour- nament. Also Rick Neubauer came through as he proved he could play with the upperclassmen. The final game of the C.C. Tournament proved to be a heart trembler, as Matt Whieldon's five foot desperation shot with one second showing on the clock, clinched a see-saw battle against a tough Huntington Beach team. 88 Basketball 1 I Bob Ross Ty Hull Tim Doyle 31 Forward 21 Guard 41 Forward Improvement is one of the highest goals set by a team. This year's bas- ketball team reached this goal and didn't stop. Led by jeff Welshans, Matt Whieldon, and Todd Lychkoff, the Katella roundballers captured the Crest- view League crown for the fourth consecutive year. Only losing one game of the season, Katella rolled past opponents especially during the second round. Besides having the usual strong inside game with Welshans and De Wald, Lychkoff, Whieldon, and Dunn supplied the needed points from the outside. Off the bench, Pat Cadwell, Rick Neubauer, and Tim Doyle did fine jobs. Coach Danley led the versatile Knights to a great season and turned out one of the finest teams in the schools' brief history.
