Art and Bowling Clubs worked after hours Creativity and patience was shown by members of the Art Club. The individual artists worked after school with clay, needlepoint, batik and other art medias, with not one of the members enrolled in a classroom situa- tion. The club visited South Coast Village at the be- ginning of the year to gather new ideas for upcoming projects. The advisor, Mrs. Escoe, taught two periods at Katella and made a special effort to come to the art meetings. Weekly activities gave Bowling Club almost 100 per cent attendance. They bowled every Monday after school in individualized tournaments lasting the semes- ter. Bowling members got to know each other very well and bowled more for the pleasure than for the winning. Senior, Dudley Wakamatsu, showed precison and determination while bowling in the tournament. at Art Club Top Row: C.Barber, L.Sallus, l..Williamson, M.Monahan. Most of the first semester was spent planning for spring field-trips to Featherly and O'Neil Parks, and a trip to Lake Elsinore. The club also became involved in city planning for bike trails. Chess is a thinking sport, that stimu- lates and trains you to look at all angles of a problem. The Chess Club practiced hard at their meetings and showed their talent and skills at tournaments with other schools. Activities 63 i

Susan Reinoso and Steve Dolan took full advantage of resources. Below: Mr. McMahon believed that teachers should take full advantage of the new library resources in their classes. V New Media Center granted to Katella New equipment in Media Center gave students new and wider op- library portunities. Library Staff: Mrs. Lambeth, Mrs. Lattimer, Mr. Nutt, Mrs. Rehm, during planning session under the leadership of Mrs. Bell, librarian. Left: Mrs. Bell, one of the finest and most dedicated librarians around, Under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, Katella received a S123,698 grant to expand and improve our library facilities. Katella com- peted with schools from all over the state and received one of the highest grants. The Media Center doubled the size of our library. Microfilms, mi- crofilm readers, tapes, filmstrips and projectors were only part of the new audio-visual aids. 12,500 books were added to make the total 22,000 with over 600 records, from classical to rock, which were added to the Media Center. New furniture throughout the library, two soundproof conference rooms, and a typing room completed the project. Mrs. Bell, the library staff and several teachers worked hard to select ma- terials that would help the students and teachers the most. With the efforts of these people, our library was one of the most complete school libraries around. During the month of April our library was designated as a model library and was open to the community for viewing. Activities 65
