The Katella Band and Chevalier Drill Team marched to the tune of two new advisors in 1974. Mr. Bob Cotton directed the band and Mrs. Ioan Hueter advised the drill team. Under the leadership of drum major Cwary Templin and his assistants Marty Johnson and Randy Lillie, the musical marching squad performed and competed successfully throughout the year. Patti Ditmar, Rosalind Hood, Laura Morte, Edrie Killingbeck and Teresa Craven put forth long hours in executing their authority and guidance over the drill team. Practice for these groups, beginning in early August entailed getting up with and sometimes without the sun. The learning of music and routines occupied much of their time in preparing for the wall-to-wall schedule of fall performances. The excite- ment of the parade season brought honors to the Knights units including the band, drill team, twirler, and percussion squads. All these units placed respectively at Rosemead, Santa Monica, West Arcadia, and All Western Band Review. Pam Pietrok, Katella's solo twirler received a first or second place at every competition while the drum squad placed first at both Santa Monica and West Arcadia parades. Also out in front to present Katella were the banner carriers led by Karla Kjellin and the flag carriers led by Cheryl King. Our band and drill team found that the high spirit of competitiveness and enthusiasm made all the hard work and practice worthwhile. . r t Top Row C Padilla L Cunningham K Forde L Eberhard B Goodman S Whitman, S.Scriba, L.Marin. Out of the four-hundred and twenty applications sent in, the band and drill team were among the lucky twenty- one selected for this honor. Along with all the glory and excitement that comes in the Rose Parade, the band and drill team put in many long hours at the Anaheim Stadium in a preparatory march around the parking lot, sometimes as many as seven times around. The two units traveled to Pasadena together the day before and spent half of the night sleeping at Pasadena City College. The other half became a New Year's Eve party bringing the two groups closer together in a big celebration. The next day held an unforgettable march that entertained over a million onlookers!
