Katella's junior Varsity Basketball team was a copy of Katella teams of old, which relied on the run and gun style of play. The team was involved in many games which were decided by less than five points, with Katella win- ning the majority of the games. Under the leadership of Tom Whieldon, the j.V.s showed poise under pressure, which enabled them to capture second place in the Crestview League. It was a well balanced team with some excellent outside shooters. Center Rick Dunn, and for- wards Ty Hull and Bob Ross competed on equal terms against much larger opponents, due to their excellent shooting ability. Tom Laube and Mike Steib were the starting guards, who were backed up by two strong benchmen jeff Bair and Pat Cadwell. This depth made substitutions an advantage which Coach Whieldon used wisely. The team finished out their season in the Crest- view League with an overall league record of 9-5. ,g ,f'.' It is a stage where there is little if any glory and where even your own classmates do not come and cheer, like they did in junior high. But for those who stick it out and make it to the varsity squad, the reward is paid back in full. The Sophomore coach jerry Taplan, and the Sophomore l.V. coach james Tozzie taught the fundamentals of the full court press and the Knight offense. Us f Arte Mory, one of the team leaders on the Sophomore I.V. squad, drove the lane in an attempt to gain a foul, relied on the quickness and shooting ability of its for- wards and guards, Perry Taylor, Steve Kaplan, Bob Sinclair and George Barela. These individuals showed future promise while leading their team to a league record of 7-7. On the Sophomore l.V. Team, individuals who have not reached their full size and ability can compete with others on their own level. This team was lead by john McGuire and Arte Mory, who helped to establish a league record of 7-7. Basketball-95
