Poor shooting proved to be Katella's downfall against Murphy. Katella's performancein C.l.F. was just as dominent as it was throughout the year, as Katella advanced to C.l.F. Finals. Displaying its great interior passing and high per- centage field goals, Katella easily beat Montclair, Arroyo, and Ganesha. The Knights then faced St. Bernard for the right to go to the Sports Arena. Many individuals felt that the semi-final jinx would bring the downfall of Katella, but this was not the case, due to our defense, which helped to control High School All-American Greg White. Once that was accomplished Katella was on its way to the Sports Arena where Katella fell behind early in the second period. Coming out after half time Katella quickly cut the deficit to one point. But lady luck was against Katella as break after break and rebound after rebound seemed to 58 51 71 . 53 45 51 play into the hands of Murphy. The final score was Ka- tella 45, Murphy 51. Looking back on Katella's season brings nothing but fond memories and success. Starting with pre-season play where the team's power was first shown, the Knights went undefeated, and captured three tournament crowns. Then in league action, Katella wrapped up first place three games before the season was over. Mike Lopez, jeff Welshans, and Mike Dunn made the All-Crestview League Team, with Mike Dunn being named as the Crest- view League Player of the Year. C.l.F. followed league action and Tom Danley's squad became the C.I.F. 3-A Runner-up Champ. Basketball-91 W

Katella's junior Varsity Basketball team was a copy of Katella teams of old, which relied on the run and gun style of play. The team was involved in many games which were decided by less than five points, with Katella win- ning the majority of the games. Under the leadership of Tom Whieldon, the j.V.s showed poise under pressure, which enabled them to capture second place in the Crestview League. It was a well balanced team with some excellent outside shooters. Center Rick Dunn, and for- wards Ty Hull and Bob Ross competed on equal terms against much larger opponents, due to their excellent shooting ability. Tom Laube and Mike Steib were the starting guards, who were backed up by two strong benchmen jeff Bair and Pat Cadwell. This depth made substitutions an advantage which Coach Whieldon used wisely. The team finished out their season in the Crest- view League with an overall league record of 9-5. ,g ,f'.'
