The Anaheim Convention Center Tournament has been the one tournament Katella has had in its grasp, but has never won. Teams were beginning to hear about the Knight's powerhouse and the town rivals were going to do something to stop it. john Glenn High was a perfect example of this. Through its scrappy play, they only lost by five points. But an upset was not going to happen as Katella beat their last three opponents by twenty or more points, on route to capturing first place. Pre-season was when Katella flexed its muscles. Going into the Marina Tournament with a 2-0 record, the Knights would have to face two top ranked 4-A teams. ln both instances, Katella won by six points and thus won their first tournament. Mike Dunn received the Most Valuable Player and was joined by jeff Welshans and Mike Lopez who made the tournament's First Team. Next on the Knight's schedule was the Garden Grove Tournament. Coach Danley knew the Knights would have their hands full when they played Compton and Rubi- doux. But once again the Knights were victorious due to the Pig offense and the full court press. Mike Dunn received the Most Valuable Player award and was ac- companied on the First Team by Welshans and Lopez. But unknown to the average spectator was the fact that Steve Pacho and joe McGuire were unselfishly giving up good shots to pass to the two big men in- side. All the games were a team effort and their record was an impressive nine victories and no defeats. t ' ' 55,5 .th Mike Dunn: MVP Marina, Carden Grove, First Team Convention Center. Danleymen Dominated League Action For the third straight year in Varsity Basketball Katella has shown its strength in the Crestview League with an- other championship. Every team that Katella played was usually blown off the court in the first quarter due to three reasons. First, great interior passing by Lopez, Mc-- Guire, and Pacho to Dunn and Welshans inside, proved almost unbeatable, Second, the accuracy of the shots taken by Katella was usually an amazing 600!0 from the floor. The final killer was the press, which added pressure and many times turned steals into easy lay-ups. These factors made victories over C.l.F. rated teams like Tustin, Orange, and El Modena possible. League was over now and C.I.F. was next. NN. B!! ,qi sf W i il. l 5 3 l E l 3 l ,ni vdlR jx X. AV - ,,.,,,,,N,,,,,,,,,,,, g.sg, 88-Basketball a 'J ,...
