McGuire, Tim Dewald, Jeff Welshans, Mike Dunn, Tim Doyle, Bob Bastian, Todd Lychkoff, Steve Barela, and Mike Lopez. Basketball is the number one sport at Katella, due to a man named Tom Danley. He has been the head coach for dx years and has had Hve chanwpionship baH clubs, with all of his teams having gone to C.I.F. every year. Many people felt that Katella would have a down year in basketball, but this was not the case. Aided by two transfers, jeff Welshans and Mike Dunn, Katella slowly put together the top power in 3-A basketball. Using the height from his two transfers, Danley came up with a new offense. This was to be known as the Pig offense. It is designed to give easy lay-ups to the big men inside and short jump shots to joe McGuire, Steve Pacho, and Mike Lopez when the defense sagged in. The second strong point was the famous Katella full court press. This is where the talents of Pacho and Lopez became apparent. Due to their quickness they forced mistakes and turned them into easy lay-ups. Even when teams began to con- quer the press, the pressure usually proved too much in the final minutes of the game. The Knight's third strong point was its bench, which is a must for a championship team. Few spectators understand the difficulty of coming into a game at a crucial time without having taken a shot earherin the contest But KateHaE AAaU VVhiekion,'Thn Dewald, and Todd Lychkoff proved they could handle the situation in every game. These three points were the trademark of this year's club, which was rated number oneir13-A basketbaH. WW.,w n T0.m Throughout the year, ,leff Welshans dominated the defensive boards, as shown here against Orange in the Chamber of Horrors. Basketball-85

Pre-season was when Katella flexed its muscles. Going into the Marina Tournament with a 2-0 record, the Knights would have to face two top ranked 4-A teams. ln both instances, Katella won by six points and thus won their first tournament. Mike Dunn received the Most Valuable Player and was joined by jeff Welshans and Mike Lopez who made the tournament's First Team. Next on the Knight's schedule was the Garden Grove Tournament. Coach Danley knew the Knights would have their hands full when they played Compton and Rubi- doux. But once again the Knights were victorious due to the Pig offense and the full court press. Mike Dunn received the Most Valuable Player award and was ac- companied on the First Team by Welshans and Lopez. But unknown to the average spectator was the fact that Steve Pacho and joe McGuire were unselfishly giving up good shots to pass to the two big men in- side. All the games were a team effort and their record was an impressive nine victories and no defeats. t ' ' 55,5 .th Mike Dunn: MVP Marina, Carden Grove, First Team Convention Center.
