Cross Country is a sport pushed into the background due to football. Unknown to the Katella student body is the fact that they run three to four miles before school, and seven or eight miles after school. Coach Curt Thomp- son who is a proven runner himself, used this new cur- riculum to attain stamina, and a better time. Overall the varsity was led by Pete Gray, Lance Wash- nesky, and Doug Dickerson compiling times of 10:30, 9:56, and 10:32 respectively. The team compiled an im- pressive pre-season record of 2-1, before entering com- petition in the tough Crestview League. The team ended up with a league record of 1-6. There were individual bright spots for Katella. Lance Washnesky set a school record in Cross Country with a time of 9:56. Pete Gray won the Orange County Invitational l.V. championship with a time of 10:48. Sophomore Artie Mory became the Anaheim District Sophomore champ with a record time of 10:49, while lon Kratz also won a medal at the district meet with a time of 11:09. On the junior varsity level, Katella finished out their league season with a record of 1-6. Robin Almich, Doug Wechsler, Ken Slaven, and jay Freeman were the top runners on thel.V.'s.
