Late in the game lim Ratekin fired to Ed Morrow Pursuit is the name of the game on defense as illustrated by Doug Domene, Spirited play like this on the Van uard s one yard line enabled the Knights to upset El Modena. EI Modena Stunned The Vanguards jumped off to a 10-0 lead early in the third quarter. However, the Knights bounced back with an intercepted pass at mid- field, by Doug Domene. Katella then moved to the one yard line where Darryl DiSanto drove over for the score. The Knights took the lead, 12-10, on a 40-yard TD pass from jim Ratekin to Larry Recker just as the fourth quarter began. El Modena came back with 5:55 left in the game with a 31 yard TD pass, to make the score El Modena 17 and KateIIa12.Trailing now with only one minute left in the game it seemed El Modena had the game wrapped up, but Ed Kierulff recovered a Vanguard fumble on the 31. With fourth down and long yardage lim Ratekin threw a desperate 29 yard pass to Ed Morrow on the two. From there Bob Sanchez dove into the endzone to give the Knights a 18-17 win. Dave Ordlock and Steve Tillotson made a punishing tackle, proving that the defense was the backbone ofthe Knights squad.

The team was triumphant and jubilant, as demonstrated by David Ordlock. KatelIa's First T. D. Resulted in Upset On October 21, the highly ridiculed Katella Knights posted their first Crestview League victory over the San Clemente Tritons. The defense was the key to Katella's upset. Time after time the defense turned back San Clemente on key third down and short yardage situ- ations. Then in the fourth quarter the Knight's offense established it- self. Trailing by a score of 7-0, the offense moved the ball down to the four yard line. After three plays the ball was on the one yard line. From there it was a quarterback keeper by jim Ratekin for six points. The score was now San Clemente 7, Katella 6. Trailing by one point, Coach Bob Lampshire gambled and elected to go for the two points, and the win. On the next play, the ball was snapped to quarterback jim Rate- kin, who faked a hand-off, and then threw to Mark Knapp in the end zone for two points. The Knight's defense held the Triton's offense in the final minutes of the game, to win 8-7. Bob Sanchez pushed his way down to the Tritonfs third yard line. x ABOVE: Split end Ed Morrow gave it all he had for a Knight completion and a first down. In the early moments of the Tustin game Darryl DiSanto picked up five yards on a sweep. Q. Katella Won Mud Bowl The Katella Knights ended the season on a winning note, in a muddy defensive battle. Katella stopped the Tillers ground attack completely holding them to only 47 yards, while the Knights managed to pick up 'I77 yards and a touchdown on the slippery field. Tustin scored first with a blocked punt in the Katella end zone. But Katella came back in the third quarter with some de- termined running by Bob Sanchez and Derek West. The scoring drive was capitalized by a 'I7-yard run by Derek West. Thus giving Katella a well earned 6-2 victory, and a bright note for all the seniors. COACHES- LEFT TO RIGHT: Bob Lampshire-Varsity head coach, Doug Peterson-junior Varsity Coach, Derek West received .3 well degerved rest Mike Cochrane-Varsity back coach, Rick Phillips-junior Varsity coach, Tom Cruickshanck-end coach. after Scoring Six pointg against Tustin, Katellas' league play was very encouraging as com- pared to pre-season play. The team overcame its in- experience to come up with three league victories, two of which were in the final minutes of the game. The ability to come from behind with a young team is quite an accomplishment, because even more pressure is added to the players. But against San Clemente and El Modena, the Knights kept their poise until the opportunity for victory arrived, and once it did the team usually capital- ized. There were six Knights who earned individual honors. They were juniors Dave Anderson, Doug Domene, and Rick Minarsch who received Big A Player of the Week, honorable mention Big A Empire, and second team Big A Empire respectively. While Paul Nelson was all-league and Big A Empire candidate, along with Bob Sanchez and Danny Suarez who were named to the second team all Crestview League and Big A Empire respectively. Then on the junior varsity level, which is the building block for the Varsity, Katella was short in man power, and had to forfeit some of their games. But in the games they did play, the juniors and sophomores received valuable playing time which can be used on the Varsity squad next year. Football-79
