Mr. Lampshire was aided by Coach Cochrane, Cruick- shank, and Kominek, who were the backs, ends, and line coaches respectively. Throughout the season the team was plagued by key injuries. But this did not stop the Knights' drive for victory. After not scoring in their first two league games, Katella came back with their first touchdown, and their first win over the highly favored San Clemente Tritons. The next game was against eighth ranked in C.l.F., El Modena. The team rose to the occa- sion beating the Vanguards 18-17, in the final seconds. The team finished out the season by beating Tustin 6-2. Thus compiling a 3-4 record, in one of the toughest leagues around. Away from the eye of the spectator were the many hours put in by each individual at practice. This was where in- dividuals and plays proved, themselves. Once this was ac- complished timing was then be coordinated, to perfect everything for the game. Katella's pre-season games were not as disappointing as a person's first glance might expect. The team was a young team, composed mainly of juniors, and nine returning sen- iors. In each pre-season game Katella had to fight off defen- sive lapses, fumbles, and inexperience. But as the pre-season games concluded, Katella entered the Crestview League ready for action. They learned to minimize mistakes both offensively and defensively, thus playing with a team effort. ABOVE: Against Los Alamitos, Kevin Loclcen tried a roll-out to escape on- coming defensive linemen. BELOW: The sweep was well executed, with Bob Sanchez and Kevin Locken providing the blocking for jim Ratekin. mi- ff ff' ' ig ni- 1 my y A M' ,Mi Ex-pro, Tom Cruickshanlc, added depth to the Katella coaching staff.
