Under the leadership of their director, Mr. Nelson and Drum major Charlie Clark, Katella's band had a very suc- cessful year. The band began rehearsals in August and continued at a frenzied pace. Howdy Day assembly was the first opportunity for Katella students to hear our band. Throughout the year, the band participated in many parades and received many awards. Among them was a first place at the Azusa Golden Days Parade, a first at Hawthorne Band Review, and second places at both West Arcadia Band Review and the All Western Band Review. Besides these awards, individual members of the band were also honored. At the Hawthorne Band Review, Charlie Clark received a fourth place in Mace Drum Major. Pam Pietrok, Katella's Twirler, was awarded second places at Azusa and All Western. ln addition to these awards, the Drum Squad received a second place at West Arcadia. The band also participated in the Big A Band Spec- tacular, Christmas Concert for the PTSA, a Pops Concert in january and also a combined band-drama production of Bye, Bye Birdie. Showmanship is an important part of the band. Besides the musicians there are also the banners and flags. The banner carriers were ably headed by Carol Krey and flag carriers by Lori Whitcomb. ma QQ .... fs., ' , A rrltt it fl, .4 N ,A . 1' 1 'tg y Q I fa 'Wharf .44 ABOVE RIGHT: Besides performing at Tastee-Freez, band members also found time to relax and enjoy the day.
