Wawona Lienart, Ramona Newcomb I 'I ' H ISTO ln September of 1945, 105 students enrolled at Karns High School in search of higher knowledge. After much confusion, we were herded into the auditorium. The principal explained the subiects that were offered and we, very excitedly, arranged our class schedules. You see, high school was completely different from grammar school and we were a little dazed and bewildered. We had diffi- culty in finding our class rooms and getting to our classes before the fatal tardy bell. lt did not take long for the green frosh to dis- cover that high school was not all work and no play. The class was gradually absorbed into acti- vities such as plays, parties, F.H.A. and F.F.A., and basketball games. The school paper was also pub- lished this year and we got a thrill every time our name chanced to be in it. Of course, bloodthirsty upperclossmen were con- stantly rpouncing on us, but we soon learned their tactics and how to avoid them. We also became acquainted with a group of people under the title of seniors. They were absolutely the last word in authority. We were always awed at the way they slammed lockers, yelled in the halls, copied as- signments, and worried about their social life. The class finally met and selected Mrs. Headlee as sponsor. The officers for the year T945-46 were President, Jim Carroll, Vice-President, Bobby Tol- son, Secretary, Betty Dawson, Treasurer, Imogene Head. We were pleased to have a member of our class, Amanda Byington, represent Miss K.H.S. We were allowed one class party that year, which was very successful. And so the Freshman year passed - We reassembled in September .'l946 after a much-enioyed three-months vocation. A large per- cent of the greenness and shyness had disap- peared by now and we were full-fledged soph- mores. Officers were President, Edd Beeler, Vice- President, Robert Antrican, Secretary, Amanda Byington, Treasurer, Betty Morris and Sponsor, Mrs. Ryden. This year we had two class parties. Two clubs, Beta and Letterman, were added to the RY school system and some of our class members were fortunate enough to be welcomed into them. So, with none killed, and few iniured, we fin- ished our sopfhmore year. A Then came the exciting year of l947-48. We had now reached the height of iuniors and, curiously enough, we began to pounce on freshmen as we had been pounced upon, we were far from being alarmed by senior authority. We started the year right by electing President, Robert Antrican, Vice- president, Delmar Haynes, Secretary, Amanda Byington, Treasurer, Ramona Newcomb. Since we found Mrs. Ryden to be a very likeable person and a grand sponsor, we re-elected her as sponsor of our iunior class. p The honors in the class were Irene Ford as the representative to Girl's State and J. C. Spoon and Jim Carroll as the representative to Boy's State. Glee Clubs were also introduced this year. There were trips, conventions and festivals, all pertain- ing to music. There were three gay class parties. Then came the highlight of our junior year - the Junior-Senior Banquet. It was given at Whittles Spring's Dining Room in semi-formal style. Alas! The senior year finally arrived. The class rings came and we were so happy! There were more parties, ball games, plays. Our officers for the senior year were President, Jim Carroll, Vice-president, J. C. Spoon, Secretary, Ramona Newcomb, and Treasurer, Delmar Haynes. Mrs. Ryden was again elected sponsor, along with Mr. Chesney. , You know, as we look back' over those years, it is hard to believe we were somewhat frightened when we entered four years ago, because now we have a feeling of belonging here. We have earned our place at Karns High School by our four years of patient work. Regardless of how far away from Karns we may travel or how absorbed we become in our occupation, Karns will always have a very dear place in each of our hearts. By hard work, honest sweat, and the grace of God, we - the class of '49 - will continue to study and make a suitable place for ourselves in society. NAME Robert Antrican ......
