Text from Pages 1 - 160 of the 1968 volume:

jms% 1968 uULam I These Walls Harbor Memories Which Will Never Be Forgotten With the fading of summer into fall, we witness the abandoning of summer activities to once again enter the challenging doors of learning. The bewildered and somewhat frightened freshmen, the eager sophomores, the confident juniors and the proud but somewhat sad faces of the seniors flood the hallways and uphold and respect the alma mater, Kaplan High. The faces of Kaplan High are many and varied but they reflect you, the student body. Yesterday a happy face, today saddened, tomorrow a tearful but eager face meets the world with meek anticipations. 2 You . . . enter K.H.S. full of plans for the day ahead ... anticipate the inspiring pep rally ... procrastinate studying for that test in order to meet the gang for lunch ... fight your way through the crowded halls only to be late to class again ... work goes hand in hand with fun here, you profit from the work and long remember the fun ... In School 4 5 We Dedicate The 1968 Roger To Mr. John Magee “Sit up and pay attention!” This is something every student of his has been told. But shining examples of firmness are not his sole components. He has taken Civics and made it breathe through a combination of dark sever- ity and sporadic wit. America’s past has become a clump of clay which we may mold to a successful future. His classes are delightful brews of peppered wit, salted philos- ophy, and seasoned events. With the dexterity of a juggler, he has balanced civics courses in one hand and a basketball, football or track star in the other. In the classroom, field, or gym, he has become a stolid part of our lives. The patriotism he has in- spired us with will never die. His dedication to his country and profession are unsurpassed. For the knowledge, inspiration, and dedication you have given us, Mr. Magee, the 1968 yearbook staff dedi- cates the Jolly Roger to you, as our figure head in progress. 8 The Name Of The Game Is Spirit 9 CONTENTS Administration Faculty Classes Activities Athletics Advertisements 10 ADMINISTRATION Dear Students, As this year draws to a close, search your heart to rediscover those things which give meaning to your life at Kaplan High. Some will re- main for one reason or another, vivid in your memories. Others will grow in significance with the passage of time. These we call endearing values-qualities such as honesty, courage, perseverance, justice, and respect. Your education, whether in school or out, is just beginning. It is a process which will continue throughout your lives. Choose wisely in the decisions which you make, for each will help fashion your most price- less possession, your character. Now, may 1 wish the best for all of the students of Kaplan High School. This has been an awarding year for me to work with a wonder- ful group of fine people. May God Bless You. W. E. Douglas Principal School Board Members Ward Nine . . . VERMILION PARISH SCHOOL BOARD BUILDING Dr. J. Peverly Broussard, a practicing veterinarian for eleven years in the city of Kaplan, is currently presi dent of the Vermilion Parish School Board. A 1948 graduate of Kaplan High school, he at- tended college at U.S.L. for four years and later Texas A. and M., where he received his D.V.M. degree. He particularly enjoys hunting, reading current events, and watching football games. Mr. Connie Kaplan is usually seen through the eyes of the town performing his many duties as the editor of one of the newspapers in Kaplan, ‘The Kaplan Herald.” He is also a partner in the Kaplan Rice Insurance Agency. He shows much interest in all of our school activities and has given us much cooperation as a school board member. MR. CONRAD KAPLAN Besides being an active school board member, Mr. Dunice Lee Meaux is kept quite busy with his regular occupation, which is farming. Every year he plants 165 acres of rice, takes care of it during the year, and harvests it when it is ripe. Although he has much to do, he still finds time to fly, which is his favorite hobby. He also loves children and has seven of his own. MR. DUNICE MEAUX Superintendent Of Schools Members of the Class of 1968: Sincerest congratulations to each member of the 1968 class of Kaplan High School as you approach graduation and realization of a most important goal in your lives! I was privileged to work closely with you during the year of Mr. Bordelon s absence as your High School Principal. Thus, a recollection of you will always bring to my mind happy associations and pleasant relationships. The aim of education in Kaplan is to provide our children and youth with the best possible education. Your School Board, School Administrators, and Teachers have done their best to create a stimulating climate for learning. As good students, you have cooperated by setting up the pursuit of academic excellence as your objective during your years of formal education. Automation and technological developments present challenges to you for continued growth and development. In the years ahead, try to keep alive that drive for learning and desire to excel developed during the past twelve years. In this increasingly competitive life and society, may God reward your preserving efforts with happiness and success. Cordially yours, Dr. Joseph C. Kite, Superintendent of Schools DR. JOSEPH C. It is a plan for training in the practical mechanics of gov- ernment. Application of the principles of democratic government are made in every possible way. The Constitution and the statutes of the State of Louisiana are the patterns from which the fundamental law of Pelican State should be thought of as being a mythical 51st state with a constitution, statutes and ordinances constructed by its citizens to govern them- selves. Citizens of Pel State were not only required to review knowledge already acquired con- cerning the political machinery of a state, but they found themselves performing the same duties as real office-holders in the everyday world. In Pel State, citizens elected their own officials in accordance with regular election procedures. They learned the duties of the various city, parish and state officers. They introduced and argued their own bills in the legislature. Justice was administered by their own law enforcement agencies and courts. In Pel State, the young citizens had the opportunity to learn for himself that his government is just what he makes it. Here each citizen “Learns to do by doing.” Leadership Conference In the week spent at L.S.U. high school students are taught courses which are not offered at their school and they exchange ideas with other delegates. The K.H.S. delegates are sent to learn journalism. There are two divisions in Journalism, one for those students who are interested in the problems of publishing a high school paper, the other for those students primarily interested in editing their high school yearbook. . ap record el- book to the at Fayetteville the Fort Bragg package were the high eeae. i Red Cross has sent oover , Christmas potted plants to ths .money and gifts to | supplied by the service men on have no fami- cem presents. Cheerleaders Give Glamour Left to right: Linda Faulk, Mona Dronet, Janice Broussard, Donna Roy, Gwen Vincent To Athletics The football and basketball games will always be remembered as events full of excit- ment and crowd enthusiasm. But who created the excitement and enthusiasm which seemed not quite as prevalent in the other sports con- tests? The cheerleaders created it! JANICE BROUSSARD, head cheerleader, Mona Dronet, Gwen Vincent, Donna Roy, Linda Faulk and alternate cheerleaders, Deborah Vincent, and Priscilla Marceaux took real pride in their jobs and did their very best to stimulate the fans into cheering for the home team. The cheerleaders meant more to KHS than just tradition; they were the sparks that ignited the school’s spirit. 122 Alternate Cheerleaders DEBORAH VINCENT and PRISCILLA MARCEAUX ADVERTISERS KAPLAN STATE BANK LARGE OR SMALL We Appreciate Your Account 'Offering All the Services of a Modern Commercial Bank Serving Kaplan and the Surrounding Area Since 1928 Compliments of: VERMILION BANK TRUST COMPANY Kaplan, Louisiana Member of F. To these people we wish to give our sincere appreciation. We also wish to give our heartfelt thanks to the Clerical Practice girls who worked contacting these people and selling ads for our yearbook. A special note of thanks to Mrs. Lege through whose help we were to begin and end our task. This experience will always be cherished and remembered in our minds. We are proud to have had a part in preserving the memories, activities, and achievements of the students at K.H.S. this past year. As you look back, we hope you will have happy memories.
