FOREWORD A school building is constructed of steel and ce- 'ment, strong and permanent, but it is designed to accomodate an ever-changing flow of students. Year after year, busses empty their loads each morn- ing, and people stream in waves into the hallways and classrooms. To the rhythm of bells, tides of peo- ple wash in and out of the rooms and corridors and finally back to the busses, leaving the building empty. Carl Sandburg, in his poem “Skyscraper,” says, “It is the men and women, boys and girls so poured in and out all day that give the building a soul of dreams and thoughts and memories.” As each individual forms a part of the mass so each per- sonality contributes to the whole of Kaplan’s soul — that abstract thing we call school spirit. For many of you Seniors, this is the culmination of your formal education; may your school years serve you well in your chosen career. For those who continue into college, you have a strong foundation upon which to base your future. To the underclass- men, a word from some who have already passed this way: do not allow yourself to become entangled by the petty, for these are surely the most productive and valuable years of your lives. In closing, we challenge each of you to excel through vision, enlightenment, and understanding. As you reminisce through the pages of this 1967 Jolly Roger may you recognize the significance of a most wonderful year. If you students are pleased by this record of your achievements and disappoint- ments, then our endeavors shall be rewarded. With best hopes for each of you, The 1967 Jolly Roger Staff 3
