Text from Pages 1 - 160 of the 1967 volume:

— I Kaplan “IT IS THE MEN AND WOMEN, BOYS AND GIRLS SO POURED IN AND OUT ALL DAY THAT GIVE THE BUILDING A SOUL OF DREAMS AND THOUGHTS AND MEMORIES.” CARL SANDBURG 2 FOREWORD A school building is constructed of steel and ce- 'ment, strong and permanent, but it is designed to accomodate an ever-changing flow of students. Year after year, busses empty their loads each morn- ing, and people stream in waves into the hallways and classrooms. To the rhythm of bells, tides of peo- ple wash in and out of the rooms and corridors and finally back to the busses, leaving the building empty. Carl Sandburg, in his poem “Skyscraper,” says, “It is the men and women, boys and girls so poured in and out all day that give the building a soul of dreams and thoughts and memories.” As each individual forms a part of the mass so each per- sonality contributes to the whole of Kaplan’s soul — that abstract thing we call school spirit. For many of you Seniors, this is the culmination of your formal education; may your school years serve you well in your chosen career. For those who continue into college, you have a strong foundation upon which to base your future. To the underclass- men, a word from some who have already passed this way: do not allow yourself to become entangled by the petty, for these are surely the most productive and valuable years of your lives. In closing, we challenge each of you to excel through vision, enlightenment, and understanding. As you reminisce through the pages of this 1967 Jolly Roger may you recognize the significance of a most wonderful year. If you students are pleased by this record of your achievements and disappoint- ments, then our endeavors shall be rewarded. With best hopes for each of you, The 1967 Jolly Roger Staff 3 K.H.S. VIRGINIA DESHOTELS Because she has worked for and with us, be- cause she has given generously of her time and wisdom — words are a poor substitute with which to express our sincere respect and admi- ration for this teacher. Presently a senior class sponsor, she is in- volved in many extra activities for this class. She voluntarily gave much of her time to the Junior-Senior Prom. She is never too busy to stop and talk with a student or to help the school in any way she can. In appreciation of such devoted service the staff proudly dedicates the 1967 Jolly Roger to Mrs. Virginia Deshotels. THE SPIRIT My school has a spirit Freed by a rousing cheer, A clapping of hands, Or a broad smile of victory. My school is spirited, In time of demise, On the athletic field or in the classroom. And there is always a swelling Pride of awe when the Alma Mater is sung. CHARLOTTE SUIRE ADMINISTRATION FACULTY ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS ADVERTISEMENTS 12 A MAN WITH A PURPOSE “It is my wish that each student who attends Kaplan High will be a better person when he leaves than he was when he came.” Our principal, Mr. Adlar Hebert, looks upon each student as an individual with potential. He takes time to help each student realize and develop this potential. It is in this endeavor, as in all other areas under his guidance and influence, that Mr. He- bert is a successful and respected principal. 13 SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS WARD NINE . . . Dr. J. Peverly Broussard, a practicing veter- inarian for ten years in the city of Kaplan, is currently a school board member. A 1948 graduate of Kaplan High School, he attended college at U.S.L. for four years and later Texas A. and M., where he received his D.V.M. degree. He particularly enjoys hunting, reading cur- rent events, and watching football games. 14 DR. PEVERLY BROUSSARD Mr. Connie Kaplan is usually seen around the town performing his many duties as the edi- tor of one of the newspapers in Kaplan, “The Kaplan Herald.” He is also a partner in the Kaplan Rice Insur- ance Agency. He shows much interest in all of our school activities and has given us much co- operation as a school board member. MR CONRAD KAPLAN Besides being an active school board mem- ber, Mr. Dunice Lee Meaux is kept quite busy with his regular occupation, which is farming. Every year he plants 165 acres of rice, takes care of it during the year, and harvests it when it is ripe. Although he has much to do, he still finds time to fly, which is his favorite hobby. He also loves children and has seven of his own. An eager young man full of anticipation for the future walked out of the doors of Northwestern State College for the last time. Little did he know then that the footsteps of life would lead him to his present position as superintendent of Vermilion Parish Schools. Superintendent G. J. Ledet holds the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education. Soon after his graduation from Northwestern he became the principal of Abbeville Elementary School. His excel- lent executive ability was proven to Kaplan residents when he served as Principal during the absence of Mr. B. J. Bordelon. In his present position he is a respected administrator who has capably guided our school system through its most rapid period of progress. For your devoted and unselfish service to this cause, we thank you, Superintendent Ledet. 16 The KHS Class of 1967 luUP FACULTY TO KNOW HOW TO THE ART MISS D. You now hold in your hands its future . . . whether its high principles are upheld depends upon what plateau your maturity has reached. It seems that these responsibilities shine only dimly in the future, but before you feel able to accept them, they will have gone. You will be receiving your senior ring and wondering what happened to your sophomore days. You think that your class will never be able to accept positions of leadership, but you are suddenly finding yourself efficiently doing that very thing. Then you will be wearing that long flowing gown, look- ing with melancholy at the past days, and with eagerness for the future. Yes, you have the whole world at your feet. VINCENT LONNIE R VINCENT STATE OF PELICAN The objective of Pel State is to educate youth in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of Am- erican citizenship. It is a plan for training in the practical mechanics of government. Applications of the principles of democratic government are made in every possible way. The Constitution and the statutes of the State of Louisiana are the patterns from which the fundamental law of Pelican State has been de- veloped. Pelican State should be thought of as being a mythical 51st state with a constitution, statutes and ordinances constructed by its citizens to govern themselves. Citizens of Pel State were not only required to review knowledge already acquired concerning the poli- tical machinery of a state, but they found themselves performing exactly the same duties as real officehol- ders in the everyday world. In Pel State, citizens elected their owm officials in accordance with regular election procedures. They learned the duties of the various city, parish and state officers. They introduced and argued their own bills in the legislature. Justice was administered by their own law enforcement agencies and courts. In Pel State, the young citizens had the opportunity to learn for himself that his gov- ernment is just what he makes it. Here each citizen “learns to do by doing.” LEA LABRY ELIZABETH SIMON 85 LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE In the week spent at L.S.U., high school students are taught courses which are not offered at their school and they exchange ideas with other de- legates.
