The high school years are stages of growth and transition. The directions and form in which the individual grows greatly depends upon his high school. Through athletic, scholastic, and social activities Kaplan High is dedicated to developing the individual. Kaplan High is a place for students to grow in mind, body and spirit. To the growing students of a growing high school we present the 1965 Jolly Roger. KAPLAN HIGH SCHOOL KAPLAN, LOUISIANA CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION FACULTY SENIOR CLASS JUNIOR CLASS SOPHOMORE CLASS FRESHMAN CLASS ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS ADVERTISEMENTS A TRIBUTE TO ... MRS. ETHEL B. DOUGLAS RECIPE Ingredients 2 cups of adequate preparation for dedicated teaching 1 cup of wisdom 4 teaspoons of wit 1 dash of ability to laugh at oneself 1 block of genuine concern for students 3 cups of ability to inspire Mix all ingredients well, sifting three times with un- selfishness. Place mixture in a heart of gold, well greased with true discipline, and bake in an oven fired by the warmth of friendliness. With luck you may succeed in producing as successful a teacher as Mrs. Ethel B. Douglas, for whom we pay this tri- bute. 5 EDITOR’S MESSAGE We, the annual staff are proud to present to you the 1965 Jolly Roger. We have tried to catch glimpses of the past year, so that in years to come all of the activities of our 1965 school year will not be dim or faded from our memory. The credit for the production of the yearbook goes to the Jolly Roger Staff. The staff, however, has fur- nished only the outlines of the story we find when we turn these pages filled with happy recollections. The rest of the story is in the hearts of every individual. Education is in itself a wide and heavily traveled pathway. There are many forks in this pathway - each leading to some goal set by those who are traveling upon it. We are proud of our faculty who are the guideposts along our pathway through high school. Without them our journey would be tutile. In later years, while turning these pages, if you should recall the smiles, dreams, and sorrows of 1965 we shall be content knowing we have done the thing we were called upon to do. y cm 6 Juanita Monceaux ADMINISTRATION Q ♦ V, SUPERINTENDENT Mr. Ledet, Your letter which appeared In our last year's an- nual was greatly appreciated because It presented a challenge to our youth of today. Since we are to be the adults of tomorrow. It is up to us to dwell mainly on what is right with the youth rather than what is wrong. Our standards of education should be set up high enough to improve our faculties and make us even better than the youth of yesteryear. The students of Kaplan High thank you for your encouraging letter of realization to the problems which youth faces today. Cordially yours, K.H.S. Students PRINCIPAL You will find no substitute for accurate specific knowledge. Ignorance is evil and paralytic. The best intentioned idea allied with the most sincere motives are ineffective and futile if they are divorced from ade- quate knowledge. You should strive at all times to make use of every opportunity in this school to prepare yourself for the fu- ture. 10 MR. RAY FRUGE Senior Center 106 Cftti our Are they really going to destroy the school? Liz and Jackie getting ready to work geometry prob- lems ONE DARK NIGHT AT FIFTY-TWO MINUTES PASSED ELEVEN On the eve of my final in chemistry, I discovered that I had left my workbook in my locker. Hur- riedly I ran to school, and while steathly crawling through a window in Mrs. B. Landry's room, I heard STRANGE voices in the hall. Being a curious person, 1 sneaked up behind a door to investigate. Much to my surprise and disbelief the voices belonged to the hands on the clock next to the room of the since retired Mr. Saporita, who is presently residing with his grandchildren in San Francisco. Wouldn’t you know those two old needles were recalling memories of the class of '65--I never thought the hands of time were quite so ancient. Excerpts from their conversation went as such. Do you remember, Shorty, when Veronica Conner, Judy Trahan, Linda Landry, Beverly Mire, and Margaret Greene were freshmen and got kissed in the conference room by four senior boys who con- vinced them that it was a freshman requirement for the girls? Yes, I do, Beanpole, not to mention the time that the senior girls dragged Kenneth Meaux, Benny LeMaire, Thomas Breaux, Ronald Menard, and Marvin Hebert into the French booths and required the same of them. Shorty, that was the same year that Phil Landry grew an inch and shocked everybody. Oh! And Myrna Vincent in a fit of rage tore all the pages of her TEMAC book into bits and Wanda Duhon spent the next few weeks piecing them back together. At mid-term that year Darrell Hargrave detected a muscle. I thought that he might even get to be a football player after all. Then Dennis Doucet hopped right along into 10th grade; maybe that's what started his high jump- ing. By the time those freshmen became sophomores, Connie Hebert, Phyllis Girouard, Sue Faulk, and Sue Vincent were intensely Inspired every third period by their good-looking civics teacher. Beanpole, I can't forget that same year how Beverly Lege, Brenda Vincent, Brenda Hebert, Lou Jane Marceaux, Gloria Alleman, Brenda Beniot, and Peggy Simon began to wear make-up and fix up their hair because of the three new additions from the seminary - Manuel Broussard, Voris Abshire, and Ted Roy. Speaking of boy-girl relationships, that time that Ronald Hebert and Nolan LeMaire began asking Pat Gautreaux, Martha Broussard, Mary Lou Duhon, Doris Rost, and Tommie Granberry for Dates - you would think that by the time they got to be seniors they would be great Cassanovas. Well, on they went into their junior year fully enthused with the nine months ahead of them. Yep, some of them like Cynthia Faulk, Sally Schexnider, Clara Harrington, Joyce Hebert, Dorothy Key and Pat Menard got such a big charge out of measuring for their class ring that they went out and got themselves a diamond (since they knew their size.). Basketball that year held a high interest for Renda Hebert, Mary Ann Broussard, Barbara Vincent, and Peggy Stelly who formed a Ray Fruge Fan Club. Along came the prom and did it come. Leighton Couvillon became an expert crepe paper cutter, and Wade Mouton acquired blue hands. Darrell Richard ought to become a fireman with all the experience he got climbing that ladder to cover the lights. (Not to mention Sharon Broussard, Lynwood Vaughn, Diana Lormand, and Holloway Bourque going cross-eyed from cutting tin foil stars. Unfortunately Sam Doucet and Kenneth Vincent’s idea of blowing up the dead fish to make them float didn't work. Thanks to Juanita flash-happy” Monceaux, the memories were preserved on film.” The car wash came before the prom and Ray Clark with the aid of Calvin Marceaux and Darryl Bertrand proved to be great glove compartment cleaners. 109 The Class of '65 blew in with Hurricane Hilda, but thanks to Harris Broussard, Stephen Simon, and Conrad Clark’s masculine charm, the old girl was persuaded to turn away from Kaplan, Homecoming arrived and Wilfred Boullion was certainly proud of Brenda Broussard that night. Speaking of being proud, the football fans of Harold Trahan, Ronald Bertrand, Terry Simon, and John Marceaux, and Louis Guidry, who led our team to a 32-13 victory over Scotts By the time January rolled around of course the class had to celebrate by having a picnic in the woods. The 'swamp stompers', George Greene, Rayfred Hebert and Willis Hebert naturally had to row their boats around the marsh checking for alligators! What I thought was funny. Shorty, was on graduation night when Mae Rose and Rodney Trahan were walking up to get their diploma and Rodney tripped on the stairs Yep, that class was certainly a dilly. Even now they're still stirring up action. Why I heard just the other day how Collins Bourque and Charles Broussard had been really successful in writing their 'Advice to the Lovelorn Column.'
