I 6 n t Jally IS KOCI-K KAPLAN HIGH SCHOOL KHS ALMA MATER 'Mid ringing bells and singing children Smiles and loads of cheer. There stands our own dear Alma Mater Now and through the years. Her buildings tall and grounds so neat Stand under bright blue skies. As years go by our thoughts return To dear old Kaplan High. COLORS: Black and Gold NICKNAME: Pirates CONTENTS TITLE PAGE DEDICATION MESSAGES FOREWORD FACULTY CLASSES ATHLETICS ACTIVITIES ADVERTISEMENTS DEDICATION EDUCATOR - COMMUNITY LEADER - PARENT These three appositives cannot begin to describe the person to whom this I960 yearbook is dedicated - Mr. Earl Comeaux. Born and reared in Kaplan. Mr. Comeaux has shown great leadership qualities both in high school and college. As an educator in the fields of French. English, and Civics, he inspires students to work towards achievement in life and practices the principles which he teaches in Civics which acclaim him a community leader. As a parent, he inspires his family to develop spir- itually, socially, and educationally. He has taught his followers to lead a more useful and satisfying life by means of education, spiritual, and social activities. For this, we make this dedication. You, as students of the Kaplan High School, represent America's greatest resource and re- sponsibility. The way you grow and develop, the knowledge and ability you gradually acquire, the attitude and conduct which characterize your living, are of paramount importance to the con- tinued well-being of our nation. In the midst of present economic and social changes that have resulted from unprecedented technological developments, we find ourselves living in an age that demands more wisdom and more responsibility than ever before. The complexities of today's world call for you to acquire broader knowledge, greater skill, and deeper understanding. You must also learn how to analyze propaganda, seek the truth, and recognize the techniques that are injurious to the welfare of mankind. You have the teacher and the place; so you, as the child, must make use of every oppor- tunity to prepare for the future. Dear Friends: If the challenge to the American School System to gear itself for mastery of fifty years of future progress, with all of the technological and social changes that these years will bring is to be met, additional re- search on human learning must be made and scientific effort to discover more about human intellectual power made. Educational trends in keeping with requirements brought about by swift moving social and scientific de- velopment should be of utmost interest to you as students because of the fact that you are on the verge of stepping forward into a most seriously competitive world and because you will soon be assessed with the responsibility for bearing the burden of all of the pressing social, scientific and economic problems facing a troubled world. Very truly yours, G. J. LeDet, Superintendent Vermillion Parish Schools FOREWORD The 1960 Jolly Roger staff takes pride in presenting the 1960 Jolly Roger. As time passes on. this annual will become a cherished possession through which our memories during the past twelve years may be recalled. During this time, Kaplan High has become as much a part of us as our own families. We can recall moments of joy and sorrow, laughter and tears, happiness and heartbreak. Always will we remember the days at Kaplan High. 1960 Jolly Roger Staff Linda Duhon, Editor MISS JANE ABSHIRE MR. LOUISSEY AUBE MRS. SARAH BORDELON MRS. AIMEE BROUSSARD MR. EARL COMEAUX MR. The Pirates waited seven long years to capture the sweepstakes trophy. Two boys represented Kaplan in the state track meet. Joey Theriot participated in the Javelin throw. Thomas Trahan took fifth place in the half mile. DEXTER GARY Captain The Pirates are looking forward to a better season next year. MILE RUNNERS - left to tight: Chester LeBlanc and Joe Romero. The majority of the club has already exhibited articles at fairs in the surrounding area, such as the Vermillion Parish Livestock Fair. At a recent meeting of the Executive Council in Abbeville it was determined that the Kaplan 4-H was leading all clubs in the parish with 14, 000 points. The next club in the race had only 5, 000 points. If the club goes on to be The Best Club at Achievement Day, this will be the first time in thirteen years.
