Our praise to thee, our Alma Mater, Dear Old Kaplan High. COLORS: Black and Gold TEAM NICKNAME: Pirates Mssm Dedication COACH JOE KITE For his outstanding services, both on and off the ath- letic field, we the Jolly Roger staff dedicate our 1959 yearbook to Mr. Joe Kite. A home town boy who made good, Joe Kite is commended for his able leadership of youth through his understanding, because he so recently passed that way himself. Both by example and training is he well suited to raise the standards of the youth of Kaplan High. Well known are his excellent academic standing in high school and college and his enviable rec- ord as an all-around athlete in high school, college, and in the service. His rigid standards of perseverance, good sportsmanship and good citizenship with which he imbues his players are well known to all. He is indeed a builder of men. r ncipa. This year's annual, so well prepared by a group of out- standing pupils, illustrates the many experiences which assist in meeting the common, as well as the individual, educational needs of the youth in the Kaplan High School. All of these educational experiences provide the under- standing, habits, attitudes, and ideals, based on impor- tant knowledges and skills, for present and future living in a changing world. The staff and the advisors are to be congratulated for doing an outstanding piece of work. JtiULIOil PA.OJH .QtOOL fcdUi) 0fflce«220 South Jefferson St Telephone IVlnoaks 3 397} P. 0. Drawer 89 Abbeville. Louisiana January 26, 1939 Students, Kaplan Ulgh School Kaplan, Louisiana Dear Friends Recently published reports of Russian scientific achievutwnts lave created anxiety and the feeling that re-evaluation of the African education Syster should be oade for the purpose of deternlnlng whether or not the Russian education Systen is superior to ours. As American students, this is of Interest to you. 1« A study of the two educational systeva establishes that the Russian systen is one of selection under which the gifted receive very serloue training in Science and Kathetaticc principally, to the exclusion of other subjects. The American systen on the other hand has been built upon the prealsc of equality. It is based on the derocratlc convic- tion that extra-ordinary qualities arc present in ordinary people and that In every person there is the potential to rise to great heights and that all phases of education are Important. Very truly yours C. J. LcDet, Superintendent oretlion Parish Schools CJL lf KM k With this school year swiftly closing, we now pause to catch a glimpse of the happiness and friends we have en- joyed. Many things have happened in these past twelve years, which we will remember for a lifetime, but somehow we find ourselves holding very close to our hearts and minds the experiences that we have shared in this past year. This year of 1959 will live on in our memories forever. It is with much happiness that we present to you our 1959 Jolly Roger. In later years, when you are turning the pages, we hope you will remember the dreams, the sorrows, and the smiles of 1959. Jolly Roger Staff Editor Virgie Dronet MRS. S. BORDELON Language MR. E. THE BASKETBALL ROUND-UP As usual at Kaplan High School, the basketball season has been successful. The Pirates compiled a record of 25 wins while only losing 4 games. In doing so the Pirates hit on 42% of their field goals. They were led in this department by Dexter Gary and Herschel David. From the free throw line the Pirates made good on 404 out of 669 for a 60.3%. Of the start- ing five, Kenneth Clark had 56. 6%, Herschel David 61.4%, Dexter Gary 65.3%, Michael Primeaux 55. 5%, and Milton Toups 65.7%. A good fast break enabled the Pirates to average 65.5 points per game while their defense allowed opponents only 42.8 points per game. In tournament play the varsity won their own Kaplan Invitational, placed second in the S.L;I. Invitational, and placed second in the Vermilion Parish Tournament, although they had proved to be the best Parish team by beating all opposition in the parish during the re- gular season. Next year the Pirates will play without the services of four outstanding players. Gone will be regulars Dexter Gary and Michael Primeaux, and the helpful John Morris Bailey and Albert Duhon. Even without these players’ assistance the Pirates should field a good team. There will be speedy Herschel David, accurate Milton Toups, and big Kenneth Clark to build around. To help fill the void lift by the four graduating seniors, the Pirates will have in Chester Leblanc a very capable varsity reserve plus outstanding Jr. Varsity members Percy Lormand, Danny Romero. Thomas Trahan, Richard Fabre, and Eddie Doucet. The latter five are only sophomores and will provide the Pirates' talent in the years to come. Yes, with the District Crown under their belts, the past basketball season at Kaplan High has been bright, and the future looks even brighter.
