As long as time continues to flow steadily people will change to adapt to the times. Fads are people keeping up with the times. The way a person dresses acts and talks is related to the year decade or century in which they are living in. William Shakespeare s writing is sometimes hard to follow because the language in his time and the language in our time different in many aspects. One ex- ample of th's is dialect. In Shakespeare s time a person would not ask someone to come here. Instead he would ask the person to come hither. Actually people do not change' they just adapt to their surroundings. A fad can be started by one person or a group of people. Male Rock stars are responsible for putting ear- rings on the ears of some of the male population. World Around Us' THI G CHANGE The world is always changing around us. Farmers used to use horse and plow to work the untamed lands, gasoline used to cost a lot less than it does now, women used to wear honnets, etc. Somehow, as time progressed and peo- ple evolved, we just adapted to the ever changing world. Kansas Wesleyan has adapted to times, people and things changing over the past. two years. There are many new faces in many different, places all over the campus. This sudden change in the atmosphere ol' K.W. is not a unique trend f we have just turned over a new leaf and changed the guards. LBERT EL 0 VL.: When speaking of 'service' one name clearly rings out above the rest. For the past twenty-nine years, Dr. Albert Nelson has been giving of himself to help prepare Wesleyan students to become teachers of tomorrow. He is probably the most interesting person on the Wesleyan campus. His stories of being a pilot in WW II and experiences as a small town teacher are not the only interesting aspects of Dr. Nelson. He is also known for his dry wit, sometimes not so funny jokes, being a whiz at trivia pursuit - especially on Kansas history, and his all time famous saying after lecturing for twenty minutes 'but that's neither here nor there.' We ap- preciate Dr. Nelson for what he adds to Wesleyan. We can never repay him for all his service and work at Wesleyan but through this dedication we can show our love and appreciation. I was really shocked to have won,', said Myers. Once you are married, you lose contact with the incom- ing freshmen. Mike's wife, Juliana Fassler Myers, escorted the winter festival king. I was more excited than him and really proud of him. Mike started a family tradition. On April 27, 1985, Juliana was crowned Miss Wesleyan during the annual spring Lilac Fete. Everyone said 'King and Queen', Mike ex- plained. I was very proud of Julie, and I care more about her crowning than of mine. Juliana was surprised that a transfer student could become queen. You aren't as well known as someone who has been here four or more years,', said Juliana. I was very honored. Usually, a person would think that it would be hard being a married student. It is easier, the Myers agreed. Before we were married, we were always running back and forth to each other's apartment. It always took extra time to find a time to study together. Dr. Julius Scott, associate secretary, General Board of Higher Educa- tion and Ministry, Nashville, TN, described Stanton's selection for president as the selection of a friend and colleague. Dr. Ralph Tanner, president of Baker University, Baldwin City, MAKE IT WORK Make it work. Those were the three words used by President Marshall P. Stanton to describe his job description as President of Kansas Wesleyan during his inaugural address. Professors in academic garb, the whole campus community, friends, and alumni over-filled Sams Chapel's lower level on Sunday, October 21, for the inauguration of Kansas Wesleyan's 17th President. President Stanton described the day as 'a partyg' a party like I've never been to before. Representatives of each of the college's said, I welcome you to what I refer to, sometimes facetiously and sometimes seriously, as the company of fools - fools for Jesus Christ and fools for the youth of today and hope of tomorrow. Dr. Tanner represented United Methodist educational institutions and Kansas' colleges and universities. The inauguration was heralded by trumpet fanfares, banners representing each facet of Stanton's career in the Church, and the President's own singing of the Lord's Prayer. A reception for all followed the ceremony. Stanton spoke on the importance of the basic premises on which the College was established and how these premises were wound throughout the 98 year history of the College. He stressed the im- portance of those premises in the future. We must also look for our roots in the future, he said. '6The college is always in motion. It is never finished. The quality was established but is never perfected. Kansas Wesleyan is not an end in itself, but a tool to perpetuate a purpose. That purpose is to perpetuate western civilization and provide leadership for civilization, including the church. Reverend C. M. QJackJ Fogleman, Jr., Salina, Kansas Wesleyan alumni representative, said, We believe this school is important, it is not an optional nicety, but a necessity. We welcome you gladly, pray for you often, and will continue to do so. The Board of Trustees Requests Your Presence At The Inauguratlon Of The Reverend Marshall P. A 'changing of the guard' took place at Wesleyan when Mrs. Dudley broke tradition and presented CCHEAPER' as a dinner theatre production - the first in Wesleyan's ninety-eight years of existence. The play is based on the book by Frank Gilbreth and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey, they were portrayed by Craig Hauschild and Michelle Valcoure Ctop rightb. The play brought out laughter - Tony Guzman's expressions were hilarious fabovej. However, the serious tones in the background, brought out mostly in the characters of Anne and Mr. Gilbreth, made our emotions melt and our tears escape. For the most part this play has been a delightful experience. I couldn't have done it Without the full cooperation and help from the cast and the stafff' 56 fPictures Clockwise From Top Leftj. Even though it was produced by a relatively small staff, the quality of the newspaper was very impressive. Beginning as a weekly four-page paper, the Advance soon evolved into a bi-weekly eight-page paper and its focus was changed from strictly news writing to a more feature writing. In the course of the academic year, the Advance staff covered issues ranging from the induction of a new president to Kevin Bailey's Gruks on campus! The Kevin Bailey made his contribution to the Kansas Wesleyan Advance in advertising. K staff also sponsored a leg contest in which an R.E.O. Speedwagon concert ticket was awarded to the owner of the shapeliest legs. Perhaps the article that spurred the most controversy was John Griffin's editorial entitled, Cam- pus Cuties: Back to the Stone- Age in reference to the new recruiting program started by the football department. The editorial initiated a flood of letters to the editor, some agreeing with his view, some disagreeing. Because of the hard work and dedication of the staff members, the Kansas Wesleyan Advance experienced a very rewarding year. The faculty sponsor for the Ad- vance this year was Dr. Laura Bird. . Controversial Subject Unfolds at K.W. Sometime during the spring semester, new Head Football Coach Jack Welch created a new recruiting program at Kansas Wesleyan. His idea was to have 'ccampus cuties give prospective football recruits tours around the campus to allow the players to meet more people than just the football players, coaches, and staff. However, a controversy soon arose. John Griffin, editor of the Kansas Wesleyan Advance newspaper, wrote an article titled Campus Cutiesi' and subtitled 'back to the stone-age' in his editorial column, denouncing the new recruiting format and calling it SEXIST! His editorial gained many responses, both positive and negative, and, as a result the name was changed. It is expected that the K.W. Cuties program will be continued next summer under a new name. Whether Coach Welch's new recruiting program is controversial, one thing is for sure - it has created a lot of excitement, raised morale, and overall has created a sense of unity. 5 l Xl 32. 5 x X 1 N x S is. if X X :- S- Z V , , MII! The manufacturers of Coca-A-Cola promote their pro- duct by having Bill Cosby say, Coke is it, or Coke is the real thing! James Garner sells cameras by telling the public that all you have to do is press the button, and it does the restf, Gatorade would like its customers to see that their product Quenches your thirst. Imagine trying to sell a product like a college graduate to an employer. Would it be ok to have Bill Cosby say, James Bailey is it!'7 or Jason Ruckman is the real thing! What if James Garner said 'fJust press the button, and Denise Hooper does the rest. And would it be right to say that a college graduate Hquenches your thirst? This is not the way to sell college graduates. Every year at graduation time, are we going to hear the words new and improved on campus? Of course, not. Every graduate sells themselves in their own way. Whether it is by having innate qualities that impress an employer, or through dedication, leadership, and achievement which catches the eye of the employer, if the time is right and a person tries hard to suc- ceed . . . he or she needs no logo to sell themselves. The class of 1985 needs only to be the best that they can be. Good luck graduates! v NN. i . ,...,., ,ff- Q 'S i Y' E 'i:, if KK-x 9 Af Zi if f f ,.
