No one leaves this building until I find out who murdered the President. There is complete silence. Everyone looks suspiciously at each other. Mean Mama stops beating the student. I loved him. He was a good man, says Tweetie Fudley as she wipes her eyes. No Mam. Not that President. I mean the real President, the policeman explains. U Oh! I loved her. She was a good woman, Tweetie cries. Craig Atkin- son and Rev. Larry Grove were two of the local ministers who participated in Chapel. Rock Dodridge, Covenant Minister expresses the fun and joy shared by all. Spring Gatherings started off the second semester with the new art instructor Jack Favre showing some of his favorite works. Other gatherings included a session on computer graphics, Dr. Bird and Dr. Neideffer ex- plaining the concept of LOVE fwhich included Clark Gablel, Mrs. Diaz sharing her musical talent and ex- periences with the English Language, and the popular Three In One gospel singing group visiting the campus again. Chapel became a weekly event this year as every Thursday the Wesleyan community would gather and share in a service. Local ministers, gospel singers, actors and even clowns were all part of Chapel. Guest speakers included Dr. William Brown, Dr. Laura Bird, Rev. Bar- bara Palmer, Rev. Craig Atkinson, Rev. Larry Grove, and a special clown presentation by Sandy Atkins. Mike Myers served as the student chaplain to help in ar- rangement of Chapel and other religious activities on campus. Mike was filling the vacancy left by Dr. Young Ho Chun who left Wesleyan for a teaching position at St. Paul's School of Theology. A highlight of the Chapel season was a play written by John Griffin entitled Strangely Warrnedf' The play captured a brief look at the life of John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Movement, as seen through his own reflection. The play was written to celebrate the Methodist Bicentennial and was presented in chapel and for the Kansas West Conference for the Methodist Church. The Cast consisted of John Griffin, Les Fredrickson, Dave Jenkins, Daniel Englehardt, Diana Boyd, and Kay Palmer. as E-31:3 BROTHER vvATc:HaNr3 You ? HUMANITIES FESTIVAL 1984 Hard work is what makes the Humanities Festival a success every year, and two people at Wesleyan worked more than their share on the '84 Festival. Dr. William Clyde Brown, professor of English, is the director of the Festival and was so swamped with Festival materials that he was forced to evacuate his office and move to the third floor of Pioneer. Julie Lohmeyer was the student worker who spent many tedious hours typing, drawing, and making sure Big Brotherls eyes weren't crossed. Is Big Brother Watching You? was the theme for the Humanities Festival 1984, as concentration was placed on George Orwell's classic novel 1984. Each depart- ment in the Humanities Division held special workshops throughout the day with highlights of a foreign languages contest in Spanish, German, and French, and the showing of the animated film Animal Farm by George Orwell. A film festival was also held March 10 for the Festival par- ticipants and they attended the Drama Department's production of A Man Called Peter directed by Prof. Kaye Dudley. As the 1984 Festival came to a close, it was well decided by teachers and students alike after much discussion that our 1984 did not fulfill Orwell's predictions. This consisted of displaying talents that are rarely seen by students in the classroom setting. The interesting display took place at the first KW Faculty Variety Show on November 8, 1983. Those who attended were entertained, amused, and sometimes shocked by the hidden talents of the various faculty members who participated. Dr. Sheila Drake, emcee for the show, introduced the acts which included: Dr. Travis-Neideffer and her demonstration of the twist, the fascinating magic of Dr. William Clyde Brown, Mrs. Chelo Diaz and her flying fingers on the piano, a modern interpretation of the book of Job with Jeff Reese, Mrs. Dudley in Sweetie Spreads the Bull , Dr. Laura Bird and her amusing interpretation of The Owl and the Pussycat , Dave Clark, Dr. Don Donaldson, and Dr. Karen Bahls in a skit about a concert pianist, and Dr. John Khanjian displaying his expertise on the organ. 5 l vi if Y W A 'a-if - ni' - I ' - 4 J J--Q 'C' I F 1 .A ,, P 4 I 1 B ' ' 7 v gf---:.4,1LTf 2- W ' I qi J ' ' A 1 W' l I A A Q - m 4 - , ' P 1 x l i 4 + avi' T T w l H A65 9601 -EA QSQHVQ W R -- --ga,-g . wil-A is gi. .ff kj6i5t5'?Tf1 'lv -, W if I ' H K Lil 15:6im:?3T ,Hf.' ,H -W' ,,,i, ,,,,V i ,,, 3 , Q , ,, , , ,, , ff? Filling these positions were Dwight Preston and Scott Proctor. Tony Neal was mascot. Led by Jacque Jones, head, Beth Henrickson, Trish Arganbright and Trisha Jones, alternate, they were able to work with the yell leaders to perform many new double stunts and pyramids. With the help of sponsors Jan Trulson and Ginny Bevan, the squad was able to raise more spirit than in the past. The squad not only raised spirit but led a community gathering and par- ticipated in the bonfire for Homecoming. A lot of work was put into this year's squad, but it all paid off when they were able to perform things never per- formed before. :W W CHESS CLUB Members: Noraya Minassian, Dan Baker, Nazareth Kar- jian, NOT PICTURED: Roger Wilson, Gus Gustaf- son, Kevin Bailey, Vincent Owen, Johnson John, Dwight Rickard, Darlene Peterson, Dave Harwerth, Dr. Randy Reichenbach. David Clark, director of the group and associate professor of music, said the nineteen-piece band performing on trumpets, flutes, saxophones, trombones, guitar, bass guitar, drums, and keyboard instruments is called a Lab Band because the musicians spend a great deal of time experimenting with new sounds and learning to improvise. I Members of the KW Jazz Lab Band are: TRUMPETS: Roger Wilson, Brad Harzman, Kevin Bailey, Dave Harwerth, Kurt Williams, Debbie Ewing. SAX- OPHONES: David Cooper, Bob Cooper, Dale Swindler, Amy Hagen, and Johanna Cox. TROMBONES: Darrell Cox, Mike Marchand, Dan Hittner, Mike Lundgrin. KEYBOARD: Nerses Balabanian. GUITAR: Bob Scopa. BASS GUITAR: Doug Kile. DRUMS: Tony Guzman. DIRECTOR: David Clark. ADVANCE The ADVANCE went through many changes this year, but Kathie McCarty and Beth Henricksen, serv- ing as co-editors, did their best to put some stability into what turned out to be a very chaotic year for the publication. Other staff members that were quick to help were Heather Miller, Mike McDougald, Sports Editorg and Kim Cashkin, Business Manager. Dr. Laura Bird served as advisor. Some weak areas slowed them down but they kept on working. Emphasis on improving relations with the Wesleyan community and Student Congress, and a fund drive to improve the yearbook's financial situation were the main goals of the yearbook staff. Apprecia- tion the Board of Trustees and other Wesleyan people who helped the Coyote Staff preserve another year of Wesleyan History. COYOTE STAFF MEMBERS: fBack rowl Heather Miller, Kathie McCarty, Elizabeth Babcock, Kay Palmer. fFront rowl Gail Robinson, Beth Henrickson, Darlene Peterson, and Julie Lohmeyer. Whether it was the pizza party workshops or dedication, the Coyote Staff was determined to make As Wesleyan Turns an exciting and special yearbook. ff- S V, gf I ,iii-,w Q 19' if K , .,. Bobbie Nelson was there to face the grim day, Stacking up cards in her mean Mama way. Our charming new Dean who's known as the Fox Was conferring with his playmate who's known as the Hox. And then there were I.D.7s hundreds of snapshots, Until they remembered the film they forgot. When out in the hall there arose such a clatter, They ran from Sams Chapel to see what was the matter. Away to the Business Office they flew like a flash, But it was too late, there was a terrible crash. Hey Coach, get this, they say I gotta pay! Don't they know I'm a jock with football to play? They say that 3,000 is what I owe. Now how much is that? I only have ten fingers and toes. The confusion grew worse and chaos was near, When what to their wondering eyes did appear? But a man toting promissary notes, with a smile so sly, Sign this paper and owe us for life. We have a motto here, Either you pay or you die! Hey Coach, is this man for real? I think he's offering me a raw dealli' A raw deal?', said Daniel, as he came flying in, Why it's not possible, just look at the college you're in! We're proud, we're strong. You're attending a good school. So what if your tuition helps to build my new swimming pool. Besides an education, there's other benefits too. Why look at the quality faculty that will be teaching you. There's Sweetie Dudley, the mother of all, Sheill stuff your box with goodies when holidays fall. And Dr. Khanjian, a man of religion, He's a special sort of man with his own kind of vision. And then there's Dr. Brown, Mr. Fascination himself, His office is nothing but one big bookshelf. And we can't forget Dr. Owen, our own biology man, When it comes to being a cut-up, he can. He can? He can! And then Ted Zerger, our mathematician true, He's really into health, he likes to eat direct too. Now look at this quality and tell me truly Son, Do you think 6,000 is too much to pay for all this fun? '4Now Coach, listen here, this man's got a point. No price it too high to attend this joint! Hey you, Mr. Schmit, that paper I'll sign, Because for KW, I'll always lay my life on the line. This poem was meant with no offense intended. After all, look at the college we both attended! Julie Lohmeyer Kay Palmer The following poems were submitted to the KW Writer's Club and appeared in The Midland Bard which is the ACCK Creative Arts Magazine. Jeff Ballard also received first place in the KW Poetry Contest, and Elizabeth Babcock received second. Dream of Eternity Saddened by the Day's events, I seated myself along the river. The lonely moon seemed to smile As it watched me, laughing silently to itself. The wind whispered me a lullaby While passing through our secret place. The dew shimmered through the land, Awakening the dreams in my sleep. As the sun began its awakening, My soul began to strengthen. The sun's light struck upon my face, Setting the scene for the new day. Hoping Lady Luck would soon awaken, I awaited her arrival eagerly. Here in my secret valley of life, I reach the dream of eternity. Elizabeth Babcock Kansas Spring The line of an unused road cuts across the brow of a hill and disappears into the muddy blue sky. Tall tufts of dead grass stand gravely nodding at the edge. Dry rustlings in the cold spring wind. Bright green winter wheat seems out of place struggling above the mud to triumph in a Kansas burning sky. The spring is ever sought in skies to North and South, It lies in earth beneath our feet. Nixon Holds His Ears. It's been ten years since these headlines appeared in the KW AD- VANCE. It's been ten years since the American troops withdrew from Vietnam. I didn't wantyto go. I didn't want to die. It wasn't like WW I or WW II. I didn't want to fight for something not threatening America. Al Tiller stated as he recalled his days as a college stu- dent. I would have gone because that was the thing to do. But I wouldn't have believed in it. Barbara Lyon was the secretary to the Dean of Women at Wesleyan during the Vietnam years. She remembers it as a mild time on the campus with only a few demonstrations. Classes were cancelled several times due to peace marches to Memorial Hall. The veterans on their GI bill ob- jected. They were here for an education. Julie Lohmeyer remembers the war through her brother Randy's eyes. I remember my parents and Randy felt it was his duty to his country to serve. So when his number came up in the lottery, he went. Memories of the Vietnam War fade and vary, but everyone agrees that it changed the attitude of the country. Individualism became a household word and people started to speak out about their views. No one was unaffected by the Vietnam Years. Lots of people have closed their eyes to the Vietnam War. It was a bad dream. But it had its affects and the main thing it affected was the attitude of -America. Everyone believed 'do your own thing.' Individualism prevailed. Tiller stated. Julie Lohmeyer feels the War had some good results. It fthe warl encouraged individualism and that's an asset because it encourages people not to conform to something because of a sense of duty or obligation. People had the freedom to choose. Sometimes it takes a drastic measure to wake people up. There was chaos in Beirut as Yuri Andropov died in Moscow, but at the XIV Winter Olympics these momentous events seemed remote. Indeed, the mood that settled over Sarajevo was one of serene good cheer. The opening ceremonies in Kosevo Stadium appeared to have been stolen from a fantasy. There were 4,500 performers dressed in outfits the color of gumdrops that looked like they had been originally worn in a French Sci-Fi-moire. A cross country skier handed off the Olympic torch to Sandra Dubravcic, a 19 year old figure skater on the Yugoslavian team, and she ran lightly through the dancers and up a cascade of steps, followed magically by a drape of many colors. She then dunked the flame backward into a massive bowl to officially start the games. Six hopefuls of the U.S. were Tamara McKinney, Scott Hamilton, Rosalynn Sumners, Phil Manre and, of course, the brother-sister team of Kitty and Peter Car- ruthers of Burlington, Mass. Kitty and Peter won silver medals but they glistened like gold because for while it looked like the U.S. wouldn't see any medals. The Olympics can be regarded as the magnificent festival of the nations. The Olympic Games in their spirit and significance are much greater than a mere spor- ting festival. Watching soap operas has become a favorite pasttime for many of Wesleyan's students, as it has for college students across the nation. In some instances, it has become a way for them to laugh at the things they see happening around them. Pam Chavez is in agreement with this. When I watch soaps I laugh and I have to laugh when I see what happens at Wesleyan. Apparently, life on the soaps and life at Wesleyan both have the ability to evoke laughter. Laughter isn't the only thing that the soaps and Wesleyan have in common. John Griffin believes that, Every person is important for the development of the ever-changing plot. Without students at Wesleyan, the story could not continue. Even though students come to and leave Wesleyan every year, there is still continuity in Wesleyan's story, much the same as the soaps. Jacque Yonkin feels, 4'No matter how long you're gone, when you come back it's the same thing. It's easy to catch up on. One thing that adds to this ability to catch up on the story at Wesleyan is the students themselves. They do have the ability to keep people informed. The soaps have their talkers and apparently Wesleyan does too. But just like the soaps, we have our share of listeners at Wesleyan. 4'Everybody wants to know what everybody else is doing, states Ralph Picarelli. One thing is certain, Wesleyan will always have its share of characters, much the same as the soaps. John Griffin feels that if Shakespeare were alive in the twentieth century, he might have said, College is but a soap opera and the students but mere actors. As Carol Dixson says, Here at Wesleyan, we're always ready for the next performance. Today girls wear blue jeans, shorts, sweats, or dresses to class. We tend to feel it is our right to dress as we please. That right was won 16 years ago. Even though, women could wear slacks, they were encouraged not to. The Nov. 29, 1967 Advance states, Classroom attire is left to the discretion of the student. Casual wear is permitted, although standard attire is preferred Cdresses, skirts and blouses for girls, and slacks and shirts for boysjf' According to an article by Mike Fardella in the ADVANCE of Dec. 8, 1967, Pfeiffer Hall's dorm rules were the cause of some protest. Fardella states that if a girl were to come in late Cafter tenj three times, she was campused. This meant that she had to stay in her room from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. without any visitors or phone calls other than emergencies. A sign was placed on her door indicating these restrictions. Why did the students protest being told how to dress and when to be in? Mrs. Ginny Bevan, associate professor of HPER, thinks that students saw it as if 18 years old was old enough to not be told when to be in. John Griffin sees it another way. Today we are individuals and have gotten away from unity. Each person for himself. In the 60's they were united for a cause. Ten to fifteen years has made a difference at Wesleyan. Would students here today protest if they felt they were being wronged or if the schools made a change in rules? One student responds, It would have to be a major change in order to protest. If they told me I had to wear dresses, I would protest. things must come to an end and my term as the '84 Coyote Editor has ended. The Coyote Staff worked extremely hard on As Wesleyan Turns and I think they should be proud of themselves. I realize there will be several peo- ple not happy with this Coyote and for that I'm sorry. I apologize to MSU, Coaches Rietzke and Garretson, and the Baseball and Softball teams. We didn't have the pictures nor the season information to cover these events. We're not downplaying any event that has happened on the Wesleyan campus - everything is important - but we are a small staff carrying heavy workloads lclasses and other activitiesl. We want and need your help. Just don't complain about the inadequacies of the yearbook but help us improve them. We've never turned away, nor will we. Set a trend and be a doer not a complainer. Speaking of doers, I have quite a few to thank for their help and support this year. First, good luck to Devin O'Dell who will be my co-editor next year. Devin is very dedicated and a hard worker. He'll do a great job. Next, thanks to my staff - Gail Robinson, a willing worker, Beth Hen- drickson, always ready for a pizzas Heather Miller, whose cheerfulness helped during the workshops, Kathie McCarty, a terrific artist and cooperative AD- VANCE Editor, Darlene Peterson, a do-everything person who even helped me through some English classes, Elizabeth Babcock who stunned us with her abilities to draw layouts at our first workshops, you're a true pal, and Julie Lohrneyer without whose help I couldn't have done the yearbook, you were my right hand, we both know it. Thanks, you were the best staff I could've asked for. Next my photogs - Tony Guzman whose sense of humor was as terrific as his pictures, you pulled us out of a slump and so did Mike Hawley and John Thelander who joined the staff second semester. Thanks guys, without you the yearbook would have been nothing. Thanks to all the coaches for their season summaries and extra pictures, especially Coaches Kernan and Rietzke. Thanks to Ruth, Pat, Barb, and Sue Ann, you're the best secretaries and friends a person could have, I know who's really in charge around here! Thanks Nellie and Linda for digging out my office, and thanks Jean falias the mail ladyj you'll never know how nice it is to see your smiling face every morning. Thanks Jan Trulson for just being your peppy little self. Thanks Donna Simpson for your support and interest. Thank you dear Mr. Fox for letting me know 355,000 isn't really all that much money. I'll really miss your sense of humor. Thanks to StuCo, especially Kay Kile who was always patient with our financial problems. Thanks to Dr. Bird for all your keen little journalism tips, you're a true Nellie Bly. Dr. Brown, thanks for be- ing understanding and supportive of not only the Coyote but also my classes, you were a tremendous help. Thanks and good luck to Pres. Stanton, Wesleyan needs a good dose of you to get us back on our feet. Thank you to the Board of Trustees and all those who helped support us through boosters. Thanks to Phil and Kaye Dudley for all their support and encouragement. Thanks to Vincent Owen who updated me on mythology while I was working in my office. Now I must give credit where credit is due. The theme As Wesleyan Turnsv was last year's editorls idea. Thanks Terry Anderson for suggesting it, we really had a lot of fun with it. Thanks Nadine for answering the phone like a normal human being, I know it was hard. And last, but by no means least, I owe the biggest thanks to my family and close friends. They have always supported and encouraged me in anything I chose to do. Thanks Dad for letting me inherit some of your immense talent. Thanks Doug for reminding me that you told me so and for putting up with my few bad moods. Thanks Lori Price and Debbie Jacobs, your humor and friendship made things seem worthwhile. Thanks to my nephews, Scott and Tracy, for stamping all the pictures with lizards and giving me the expert advice of a 3rd and 4th grader. Also, thanks to my niece Kayla for drawing on my finished layouts. Most of all, thank you Mom and Grams for being two excellent ex- amples of the heights women can reach by sheer determination and hard work. You've always been an inspiration to me. Until next year - so long! KAY PALMER, EDITOR
