fx EULPUTE SWSTEIDS '75-'va PFHUEFHAZIIS '71--'75 - HEBUN 1. INPUT 11. SET ill. OUTPUT Yearbooks are traditionally non-traditional . . . they often take unusual forms and, even more often, are the result of extensive efforts to be different. Yearbook staff members usually work long and hard to make sure their yearbook is unique in both form and content. The 1975-76 COYOTE staff has put together a different book in many ways. Some of the uniqueness is the result of a great effort. But, some of the differences in form and content are the result of some unusual, unavoidable circumstances. This edition of the COYOTE covers two full years in the life of Kansas Wesleyan. Pictured inside are students who attended Wesleyan during 1974, 1975, and 1976. Seniors who graduated in 1975 AND 1976 are honored, activities held both years are featured. As this is written, many people are still asking why there wasn't a yearbook in the summer of 1975. But since the real purpose of a yearbook is to help maintain memories over a long period, in 25 years, the reasons why there wasn't a yearbook in 1975 won't mean much. So we're not even going to mention why . lt's enough to say that here is a chronicle of two good years at Kansas Wesleyan. Many fun things happened and even more good people passed through the school. We hope some of the uniqueness of those years is captured here. The COYOTE staff tried to produce a different yearbook, not because we HAD to but because we WANTED to. We hope you enjoy the book and judge us according to its content not its reason. For the members of the Class of 1975 and the Class of 1976: here's your yearbook. We hope you'll treasure it. 1975-76 Coyote Editors Long hours of work, dedication, frustration, and loyalty are involved when the responsibility of running a college institution is undertaken. Many people are involved, and each one's job is important for the betterment of the college. In reviewing this, the 1975-76 COYOTE yearbook is deservedly dedicated to the Office of the Registrar. Yet, more specifically we might say, this yearbook is deserved- ly dedicated to Berniece Hamilton, Bobbie Nelson, and LoVaurne Rasmusson, who ARE the Office of the Regis- trar. Many long and tiring hours are spent by these women trying to make every possible adjustment they can so students will be able to smoothly graduate from this insti- tution. Without their work and support we would have great difficulty adjusting our schedules and programs dur- ing our four year stay at Kansas Wesleyan. We would also like to add that the COYOTE staff is indebted to Berniece, Bobbie and LoVaurne for the help they have given to us in preparing this yearbook. lt is with these things in mind that much thanks and appreciation are extended to the Office of the Registrar. Q The '75-76 Student Senate ex- ercised its leadership under Doug Strohmeyer's direction. Early activities included the Carlson Lecture Series given by Sissy Farenthold, Homecoming and the new constitution changes for the Senate. Evening game nites and dances were sponsored by the Senate also. After much mental and phys- ical pressure Doug announced his withdrawal from K.W. and the many positions he held. Thus Sandee Hodgkinson be- came President for the remain- ing months. The Spring Carlson Lecture with julian Bond and Lilac Fete concluded a very busy and suc- cessful year of Student Senate. New Student Hosts: FRONT L - R5 Sue Nech, Patty Parker BACK L - R5 john Aragon, Ken Heize For 1975-76, the Campus Hosts were organized to work with prospective students visiting our campus. Their main responsibility was to meet the visiting student or group, give them a cam- pus tour, take them to sit in on classes, meet faculty in their interest areas, and finally to take them to meals in the cafeteria and see that they didn't end up sitting alone in their dorm at night. The hosts were all upperclassmen who were good representatives of the student body. They gave their time and energy to encourage other students to attend the college they had decid- ed on. We hope to expand the Campus Host program to make the campus visit more effec- tive. The Kansas Wesleyan Philharmonic Choir began its annual Spring Choral Tour March 19, with a 10-day series of Kansas and Colorado concerts planned. Conductor William Anderson and the 43-voice choir will present 11 concerts at high schools and churches during the annual tour. Choir members spent two days skiing at the YMCA of the Rockies in Granby, CO. The Choir finances its own tour by working throughout the year to raise funds. ln previous years, the Choir has visited both the east and west coasts and toured the midwest during the annual tour. For their 1976 tour, the Choir presented a two-part program. The first portion included Trumpet Gloria by Dufay, Regina Coeli by Pales- trian, Sing Unto God from judas Maccabaeus by Handel, The Glory of the Father by Hovland, Go Ye Into All the World by Eugene Butler, Nobody Knows with arrangement by Shaw-Parker, and Nelly Bly arranged by john Halloran. Barbara Balser, Norton sophomore, was the alto soloist on Nobody Knows. The second portion of the program included a nine-part work for mixed chorus and electronic tape, Ezekiel by Kemner. The Prophet EzekieI's prophetic messages to the people of judah were told through this work. The program's finale was a tradition for the Philharmonic Choir on its Spring Tour. F.M. Christiansen's arrangement of Beautiful Savior was performed with all choir alumni invited to participate. Locations of the concerts were as follows: Canon City High School, Canon City, Co. Colby United Church, Colby, Ks. Ordway United Methodist Church, Ordway, Co St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Colorado Springs, Co. Fort Morgan High School, Fort Morgan, Co. The Kansas Wesleyan Singers, the 11 member folk ensemble made up of Wesleyan students, left August 23, for Washington, D.C. and an appearance during the Bicentennial Salute to Kansas. Accompanied by their director, William Anderson, the Singers traveled to the Capitol Hill United Methodist Church and an August 29, appearance during a Salute to Kansas. Members of the Kansas Congressional delegation were also present during the observance of the Bicenten- nial. Anderson said the Capitol Hill UMC has observed the Bicentennial in 1976 by saluting a different state each Sunday. Celebrations were scheduled on the basis of the state's entrance to the Union with a different college musical group selected to represent their state each Sunday. During their eight-day tour, the singers presented concerts in Brunswick, Mo., Hannibal, Mo., Chilocothe, Oh., Clarksburg, W.V., and Bridgeport, Ill., in addition to the Washington D.C., concert. Members of the Wesleyan Singers making the trip to Washington were: Barb Davis Balser, Norton junior, Debra Billings, Kensington sophomore, Vickie Cranton, Chickasha, Ok, senior, Buford DeBolt, Downs senior, Bryan Duell, Cheney senior, Gary Farr, Peabody junior, Ken Heisz, Maize sophomore, Keith Kersenbrock, Ness City sophomore, Doug Pyle, Clay Center junior, and Pat Harman Savener, Hutchinson junior. Celebration Lab The Celebration Lab began 10 semesters ago at Wesleyan when some students and the Chaplain thought about the idea of providing a time when on campus people could gather to appropriate festivity, experimentation, Word and Sacrament. ln those five years, the Lab has produced over 150 different celebrations ranging from High Church tradition to current folk masses and footwashings. The Lab students in 1973 produced a anthology of its creative liturgies for every United Methodist Church in our conference. Since then, the word got out, and many others from across the US and Canada have written OCM request- ing copies of our work. Before the year was out, nine men were part of the team, coached by Rich Davis, director of ad- missions. A young team, the Coyotes won a duel match against Cloud County Community College, and took second in a triangular with Marymount and Cloud County. The year's best tournament finish, as a team, was a fourth place finish, but, considering the youth and inexperience of the team, it was a good year. Every golfer on the team, according to Davis, improved greatly as the season progressed, and, with the addition of several new golfers for 1977, the Coyotes should be strong competition for any team in the KCAC. ln addition to hosting their own tournament at Salina's Elks Club Course, the golfers participated in the KCAC and District 10 meets. The Coyotes entered the season optimistically, hoping to capture their first outright Kan- sas Conference title since 1972. But Wesleyan managed to finish only 9-13 overall and placed 3rd in the KCAC with a 7-8 mark. Highlights of the 1976 Wesleyan baseball campaign in- cluded a 2-0 victory over NAIA District 10 champion Em- poria State and participation in the first annual Kansas Collegiate Baseball Tournament at Kansas State University. Despite its 3rd place finish in the conference, Wesleyan had 6 players selected to the 1976 All-KCAC Team. The Coyotes were headed by Senior's lim jackson, utility in- fielder, Bill Bartow, catcher, and Bill Bancroft, designated hitter. lunior's Dave Brown, pitcher, and Mark Wilson, outfielder, along with Sophomore 3rd baseman Tony Butler rounded out the Wesleyan players on the All- KCAC squad. Sophomore 2nd sacker Byron Tomlins gained honorable mention recognition. jackson led the Coyotes in hitting, collecting 21 hits on 50 trips to the plate for a .420 average. Brown posted a 4-0 record with an earned run average of 1.91 to lead the Wesleyan pitching staff. Bancroft drove in 17 runs and Bartow delviered 16 RBl's, while Wilson collected 8 dou- bles and 2 triples to power the Coyote hitting attack. The 1976 baseball season also marked the end of a 2 year stay at Wesleyan for Coyote mentor jay Swartz. Swartz, who guided the Coyotes to a tie for the KCAC champion- ship in 1975, posted an overall 23-28 record in his 2 seasons at the Coyote helm. Editor's Comment As you might have seen by now, this K.W. yearbook is somewhat different than those of the past. This 1974-1976 book is the result of many long, hard hours of work, frustration upon frustration, and the lack of support by the students. I make no apologies for the poor quality of this book, because a book of this calibre is not put out by one person or even two, as this particular one was. My most sincere appreciation goes to Charla jenkins, advisor, and julia Boddie, for their many long hours of work and moral support. Cover design and endsheets were done by loe Colla 1974-1975. joe your idea was great, it would have been nice to have had support to develop it fully, we tried? Students this book in no way reflects all of the years accurately, but I hope it does provide a few good memories of many great and not so great events. My only other regret is that you had to wait so long, but that should be an indication to all new K.W. people to work together and produce a great new image. Well, unfortunately there aren't too many people to thank. I do want to make sure that one person is recognized, and that is julia Boddie. She really helped out when we were at the brink of insanity. I don't have much to write yet I realize that I have to write something. So as not to let you down I have racked my brains, and have come up with this: There are five houses, each of a different color and inhabited by men of different nationalities, with different pets, drinks and cigarettes. 11 21 The Englishman lives in the red house. 31 The Spainard owns the dog. 41 Coffe is drunk in the green house. 51 The Ukrainian drinks tea. 61 The green house is immediately to the right lYour ri8ht1 of the ivorY house. . . .10 71 The Old Gold smoker owns the snails. .go .. gt? .0 .4 , ,. ,o' ,010 ' 81 Kools are smoked in the yellow house.
