BOT- .jgalolaa igma ln the spring of 1950, Wesleyan's Kappa Sigma Kappa became the first fraternity on the campus to become affiliated as an active chapter of a national organization. lt became known as the Kansas Beta Chapter. The national organization was founded in i867 at the Virginia Military institute, the Kansas Beta Chapter was organized in I946, largely through the efforts of Norman Tallman, a close friend of the National Secretary. The Kappa Sigs have been fortunate in having Mr. Elroy Steele and Mr. Roger Miller as sponsors. They have been help- ful in promoting the spirit of the organization and establishing a closer relationship between members. Kappa Sigma Kappa is a fraternity that contributes to the scholastic, athletic, and social life of Kansas Wesleyan. John Hauptli and Kenny Novak were elected to Who's Who, Dean McDonald was a soloist with the Choir, Leland Long, Bill Funk, and Wayne Sondergard were members of the Student Council. The fraternity had a basketball team that was a lead- ing contender in the Salina City League. Numerous informal gatherings were held throughout the year. The annual lris Formal in the spring climaxed a highly successful year. 36 TOM ROW: Dean McDonald, Mr. E. J. Eta jab! mega With the beginning of the l95O-51 academic year, Beta Tau Omega became the first fraternity since before World War ll to have their own house. Through the able leadership of Captain Baldivieso, Joe O'Shea, and the cooperation of the members, this was made possible. Along with this fine achievement, the BTO's have re- mained among the tops on the campus: taking first in intramural football, placing second in campus decorations, and ranking high in the intramural basketball race, which was unsettled at the time of writing. The men of BTO, as always, have held many positions on the varsity teams of KWU. In addition to the campus functions, the annual Christ- mas party given for seventy under-privileged children is always a satisfying event for the men of BTO. Social events are always enjoyed, among this year's were the inter-frat dance, a few house parties, and the annual spring dinner- dance. OFFICERS First Semester President .................... FRONT ROW: i igma The oldest of all Wesleyan fraternities, Pi Sigma Upsilon, is proud to have completed its twenty-third year of activity on the campus of Kansas Wesleyan. The Pericleans have branched out into all the fields of student activity with men participating in athletics, debate, music, and student govern- ment. Bob Anderson served as president of lnter-Fraternity Council. The members of the fraternity have maintained good scholastic standards and social goals for which Pi Sigma Upsilon is noted. Under the guidance of Dr. F. C. Peters, sponsor of the Pi Sigs since its organization in l928, and of Prof. M. L. Null and Mr. John Courter, co-sponsors, experience and youth have been combined to aid the men in achieving the fra- ternal goals. The highlights of the Pi Sigma Upsilon social calendar was the Snow Formal held jointly with Delta Kappa Chi, their sister sorority. This social function was held Decem- ber 8, in the spacious ball room at the American Legion Hall. Several informal parties were also held with the Kappas. Tenth Muse became Delta Kappa Chi upon the adopting of Greek names. The sorority has as its flower the cyclamen. Cyclamen and silver are the colors of Delta Kappa Chi. Upon the opening of the school year, the mat- ter of rushing came into view. The University Church was the scene of the South Sea Rush Party. Rush week concluded with the preferential banquet held at the Brookville Hotel. The Kappas participated in the Homecoming Parade, placing fourth with their float, which carried a slogan, Peace for USA and Victory for KWU. Social events include a Halloween Party held Oct. 30 in the Coyote Den with the Kappas' brother fraternity, Pi Sigma Upsilon. An alumnae banquet was given during teachers' meeting, while Kappas attended the Sweetheart Formal held by the three campus sororities February 9. Another event in Feb- ruary was the sorority slumber party, one of the gayest events of the year. T'was the Nite before Christmas was the theme of the chapel program which the Kappas pre- sented December 8. Delta Kappa Chi is a sorority which works as a unit to promote high ideals and dependability. It is also recognized as being high in scholastic standing. The members who were elected to Who's Who in American Colleges were Ruth Tice, Peggy Sondergard, and Phyllis Poland. Among pledges who became actives the second semester is Maimu Vabasalu. She is a D.P. student here, coming from Estonia. The football queen and her attendants were Kappas this year. Evalyn Moss was queen, and Mar- ilyn Peters, Phyllis Poland, and Shirley Nelson were her attendants. It is the desire of the Kappas constantly to main- tain a high record in scholastic achievement, depend- ability, ideals, and friendliness on the campus. Representatives of the four classes work to promote inter-class harmony. Like other democratic governing bodies, periodic elections are used to reflect majority will. Early each spring political fac- tions campaign vigorously for favorite sons as candidates for council president. l950 was no exception, after strong and straight- forward rivalry, Bill Laas was elected president. He and new coun- cil representatives made their first major decision in selecting an official school ring, the first in Kansas Wesleyan's history. Thi first ring from the craftsman's hand was presented to retiring university president, Dr. Herbert Jackson Root. Launching activities of the fall of '50, the Student Council re-introduced the pre-war traditional clean-up day and received active cooperation from faculty, administration and students. Ef- forts of clean-up day beautified the campus in preparation for Homecoming, inauguration of the new university president, Dr. A. Stanley Trickett, and ground-breaking ceremonies for the new women's dormitory. This year, the Student Council has taken the lead in many activities. It sponsored procurement of a needed student mail box to handle efficiently correspondence of interest to students: an- other innovation was the development and use of teacher rating Counci scales, which is administered by the council. Among important amendments was the sportsmanship agreement with Bethany to handle the situation arising from football ties. Highlights of the social calendar included the Homecoming activities and a com- mencement dance. The Student Council won recognition for its assistance in establishing a state organization of student councils and had vot- ing representation at Emporia in the state convention of student councils, a group seeking to develop and handle solutions of cam- pus government problems throughout the state. Reigning over the Lilac Fete on April 27 was Queen Marilyn Stuber, a lovely and charming representative of the women of Kansas Wesleyan. She was attended by Mildred Hazen, Marilyn Peters, Anita Dean, and Norma Boardman. Following the placing of the traditional lilac chain around the Queen's throne, Miss Wesleyan was crowned by a friend of her college life, Profes- sor Leon Willgus. She wore a sparkling white crown and carried an unusual and attractive bouquet of red roses and white carnations, while her attend- ants wore single strands of flowers in their hair. The flowers and crown ex- pressed the compliments of the COYOTE to the royalty of the Fete. Entertainment of the Queen's court was highlighted by folk dancing, part of a program built around Wishing on a Star. Following this was the customary wishing well ceremony. After the Lilac Fete ceremony, a recep- tion and dance was held in gaily decorated King Gymnasium. The Jimmie James band provided music. The Coyotes played a ten game schedule and fin- ished with three wins, six losses, and one tie. Wesleyan opened the 1950 season with a de- feat from the Southwestern Moundbuilders by a score of 27 to 13. Traveling to Lindsborg, the Coyotes out- snarled, out-clawed, and out-fought the Bethany Swedes but had to settle with a 14 to 14 tie. The Coyote gridders dropped a close game to the St. Benedict's Ravens in a non-conference game by the score of 19 to 14. The Homecoming game with the Ottawa Braves proved a disappointment as the Wesli- men lost by the score of 16 to O. A victory was finally won in a close, but thrilling game with Mc- Pherson, when with four minutes to play in the game, Don Howe tossed a screen pass to Hank Doring, who sprinted the remaining 55 yards to pay dirt. The Emporia Presbies were sent home by a sound beating at the hands of the Coyotes to the tune of 40 to 13. The KWU Coyotes out-passed, out-rushed, and out- fumbled the Baker Wildcats in a game that saw the Orangemen win by a score of 46 to 20. Piling up their biggest yardage on the ground of the season, the Golden Clad Coyotes trampled the Bethel Grey- maroons 53 to 0. The next foe, the Hays Tigers, proved to be too much for the Weslimen, as the Tigers downed the Coyotes 26 to 13. Playing in freez- ing weather the Coyotes lost their last game of the season on Thanksgiving Day to their sister school, Nebraska Wesleyan, by a score of 14 to 7. B9 'Q' fm.
