Wbilly santoro, Scottsdale, ariz., junior WOM ni S GREATEST S AN UWKCHES Weight-loss gimmicks are invading restaurants. grocery stores and last-food chains. The newest lad is the miracle diet that cuts carbs, the Atkins Diet. The Atkins Diet is so popular that t'CStzlt1l'zlllls and other food-related companies are modifying their menus and packaging to offer Atkins-friendly foods. With celebratics like jennifer Anniston saluti ng the low-carb diet. others were sure to follow suit. Subway was advertising low-carb wraps. TCI Fridays changed it menu to highlight low-carb options like the New York strip steak Michclob Ultra's entire marketing campaign rests on its low carbohydrate cottnt. ColdStone Creamery even offers a Sinlcss Sweat Cream. Roly Poly Sandwiches allows customers to recieve their wraps withotit a tortilla. as does Chipotle. Einstein Bros. and Creat Harvest Bread Company added lriw-carbohydrate options to their bagel and bread selections. The Atkins Diet argues that people will lose weight by loading up on proteins like meat and eggs. But avoiding all carbohydrates is more difficult than just ctttting down on pasta and white bread. Carbohydrates are lurking everywhere, even in fruits and vegetables. The Atkins Diet is the product ofthe late Dr. Robert Atkins. who first pttblished his ideas in 1972. Dr. Atkins theorized that because the body burns sugars for energy first. and all carbohydrates are simple sugars, fat is stored instead of burned. By cutting ottt carbs. the body is forced to use fat for fuel. Defenders swear by it, but it seems that this diet contains both benefits and risks. Ann Chapman. a registered dietieian at Watkins Memorial Health Center, said that while you may initially lose weight. you will gain the weight back as soon as you discontinue the dict. She said she wasn't in favor ofthe diet beeattse it doesn't promote healthy eating because it docsn't allow lor enough vegetables or grains. Other adversaries say the emphasis on highilat Hmod will increase the risk of coronary heart disease and strain on kidneys. liver and bones, A modified version ofthe Atkins Diet is the South Beach Diet. which allows more ofthe vegetables and grains that Chapman recommended. Designed by Dr. Arthur Agaston. the diet encourages lean meat and low-fact cheeses. He promoted eating broccoli. peas. whole grains. pasta and beans. ln the South Beach Diet, though. eutting calories is key to successful weight loss. Both Atkins and the South Beach Diet induce ketosis lorweight-loss. lietosis causes the body to stop using carbohydrates lor energy and start consuming lat. Nutritionists offer these simple guidelines: Research a diet before trying it. excercise, be protein conscious. beware of cravings and listen to your body. Students can make zui appointment to see a dietieian at Watkins Memorial Health Center if they are interested in radically changing their diet. Wordsstaffreport t tt it
