Ballet may not look hard. but most people underestimate the amount ol'ef'Iort and skill that has frone into looking effortless. f e- The reality ol'a daneer'd life is hard work. Many have daneed sinee they were toddlers and daneing is now rhythm in their bodies. not just motions. Repetition ol'basie tondues or plies is something a rlaneer hears all her lile, Meggi Sweeney. lreslinian. started daneing when she eight years old at a small loeal studio. liver sinee, her passion lor daneing has developed even further. She attended many intensive summer danee eamps where she daneed lor eight hours eontinuously. KU has some ineredible daneers. it hieh provides an ineentix e lor me to reaeh that higher level ol'teehnique. Sweeny said. This type oliintensity is the norm lor many daneers who want to perleet their teehnique. The University ol' Kansas doesn't oller intensive training but does ofler i arious lex els ofballet. The danee department also ollers a University Danee Cionipany that requires tryouts. The Company praetiees multiple times a week to get prepare lor perlormanees at the Lied Center. Many daneers in the c1am,,anyati'iu- lrom injuries beeause ol'how rough ballet is on the body. They eonstantlv have to streteh and iee their bodies to get through the pain ofdanee. This past homecoming KU added two new traditions - a kissing record amd student housing joining the homecoming contests. The normal contests oferaziest lim. mural painting. Chalk 'N Rock. 'Canfstruction. lield rlay. spirit sing. the parade. and Ex.C.E.L. continued as tt major part ol'Homecoming activities. The week ol'ex ents culminated with Late N ight in the Phog and Homecoming day activi- ties. including tt loothall game and parade. Late Night on Friday, Oct. 17. featured K.l.S.S.. Keeping In School Spirit. sponsored by Guiness Book ol'World Records and Hcrsht-y's Kiss. The Homecoming Steering Committee prompted lims to break the old record lor number ol couples kissing at once. With l.632 kissing couples. thc University surpassed the record ol 1.582 couples. Hundreds olflttyliaxt k litns lined jayliawk Boulevard Saturday morning to sec chicken wire and tissue paper representations oftheir linorite hird. Spectators watched I5 lloats compete in this years homecomingparade under the theme oI '.lay'liau k Generations: Bringing Back the Classics.
