H'hile the carnival provided an outlet for diversified interests, it also gave students the opportunity to renew acquaintances somehow forgotten during the sunnncr break. l'nited for the first tin1e were the 11ew student convocation and induction ceremony, an impressive occasion at which Chancellor XVescoe urged the new students to innnerse themselves totally in the unique experience of knowledge in order to absorb and supplement the University's vitality. Submersion past the point of recovery was keenly felt by many as they proceeded to be drowned in the noise and confusion which prevailed on the enroll- ment floor. lint even the five-thirty Friday subjects survived with no more than five seven-thirties and a Saturday, just as they had the deans' meetings and advisors' conferences preceding. New students were extended the opportunity to sample the diversified world of campus organizations at the SITA ,-'Xctivities Carnival, another annual niara- thon. Cwens, the sophomore honorary organization, asstuned an active role by conscientiously working to orient the freslnnan women to the people comprising the institution. .X picnic supper was held on the GSP parking lot. at which time .AXXVS was introduced via the fashion board. The orientation program also included such lighter activities as the Kll-Y Hlater- melon Feed. the IRA 'l'ransfer Treat, the Traditions Dance attended by the cheerleaders, and the Union 14 As Orientation Hleek progressed, an endless road to living facilities reflected the immense proportions ol' university life -atademically and otherwise. reception and dance colored by the presence of the singing, swinging Astronauts. A social vacuum may go into effect during final week, but the initial week, traditionally termed Country Club XVeek, is the time to get the social ball rolling. To be thoroughly in the know the new stu' dent mttst investigate all the entertainment resources at least once and then is extended the privilege to choose his particular brand. 'AYVhat will it he tonight, -lack? . . . the backdrop of gaslights in a dusky smokeffilled room at the Shantyi' . . . or should we take in a little folk singing and jazz at the New Orleans Room? . . . YVhat-you had the sandbar more in mind? XVell .... You just gotta get a date, XVilbur. Look, I don't care what the outline saysg you don't have to read 1984 before you go to class. Don't. take things so seriously. Besides you've got the only car on the whole floor .... Having been extended a taste of the luture, we hope that orientation has served as an inducement to the new students and renewed former students' obli- gations to realize their integral part in the whole by channeling their energy to collect the dividends.
