Meals are served five days a week, three times a day. Television is provided in the two lounges, which were carpeted last summer. A study lounge, which is usually tumed into a card room, is provided. And usually, if their is a problem with home work, someone in the dorm can usually help you. Dorm life can be fun and exciting, but people usually know when to be quiet, such as dming finals week. . With this addition to the library, the audio visual section of the library has been greatly increased. The Library has made several steps in past years to become the library that it is today. In Memory On March 16, 1979, David Meneley, a second-year Aviation Maintenance student, lost his life in an air- plane accident. Born September 2, 1959, David graduated from Wa- verly High School in 1977, and would have graduated from KTI on May 20, 1979, with a certificate of completion of the Airframe and Power-plant Mainte- nance program. David was a certified flight insructor with a Multi- engine rating who planned to go on to become an air- line pilot. Students, faculty and staff, especially those in the Aero Department, feel a great loss at David's death and extend sympathy to his family. As a memorial to David, the Aeronautics students and staff constructed a propeller clock and commemorative plaque which hangs in the entry way of the Aero lab. Tullis, now retired, was the main factor in the development of the KT1 library. Mr. Tullis, who was Head of the General Tech- nology Department at KTI from 1966 to 1972, was the first person who really took an interest in a library for KT1. Mr. Tullis was known for his uncanny ability of picking out books, not only for his technology but for all of the technologies at KTI . The library was originally located in the Gen- eral Technology building. However, as both the library and school grew, it was moved to its pre- sent location. The library, which has been known as the KTI library, will now be called the James E. Tullis Resomce Center to commemerate Mr. Tullis's fine work for KTl's library. james E. Wilmer Themert and Mr. Creech talk over coffee . 2,4 W1'Im er Th em ert Recreational Park Wilmer Themert, who lives and farms near Sylvan Grove, is one of the main reasons KTI is still in existence today. In 1971 an amendment was brought before the Kansas legislature to close KTI . Mr. Themert went into immediate action. Mr. Themert and several students from KTI traveled to Topeka by car and lobbied against the amendment. Mr. Themert along with his son Steve , who graduated from KTI in 1972, and Mr. Rankin then Depart- ment Head of Electronics at KTI , started an un- usual campaign against the amendment. These three men started contacting other persons around the state telling them to write their representa- tives to prevent the passage of the KTI amend- ment. The unusual aspect of this, is that they did it by I-Iam Radio. Mr. Themert, after all this, still supports the school to this day. KTI, this year, developed a park on the cam- pus. A shelter house was built by ASCET and plans are being made for more shelter houses, tennis courts, and a ball diamond. This park has been named the Wilmer Themert Recreational Park to remind students of how hard Mr. Themert worked to save KTI . of ASCET - Back row: Daniel Biggerstaff, Treasurerg jim Larry Erhardtg Randy Lamerg Alan Conwell, Secre Nicholsg Andrew Gallowayg Mark Shuckg Roger Dirksg tary. Mr. Sanders put in many hours on the Peacock using such tools as a sabre saw, a file, and some paint. Students at KT1 are involved in practically everything, intramlual sports, M.D. Dance, Student Union, card games, the Slide, watching television, cruising Santa Fe, study- ing, and finally, going to class. You know, as students, we have to put our activities in their order of importance - first things first - and what is sleep anyway. Now on the serious side, there is a time when we as KTI students have to think about our futures. This hap- pens, usually during the fourth se- mester, in the way of job interviews. After several interviews, the com- pany chosen gets all of our finer qua- lities as a result of our involvements. Go back to station 1 , do not pass go. ' Okay, let's have your money - all of it. Creech The 1978-79 school year at KTI should be remembered as a time when the future ofthe Institute was assured . In the previous twelve years of the school, some small clouds of doubt about the future of KTI overshadowed Uwe plans and progress so vital to a new and growing Institution . ' The renewed vigor of the faculty and the dedication of the student body continue to be vital to the future progress of the Institute . The encouragement offered by the Board of Regentsis a tribute to the studentsand faculty who have worked to assure that KTI is a dynamic and progressive Institution of Higher Education in Kansas . Plans are underway to transform KTI into a modern, efficient campus. The progress made so far is just the beginning for the mission of the institute will be increasingly important in the remaining years of the 20th Century.
