With many schools plagued b problems, some even faced with possible cllosing in the next few years, KTI has a hope for an exciting future. Why? Several reasons come to mind, but there are two important reasons for a cheerful, opti- mistic outlook on campus. First, KTI is a new school, with new ideas and with students deeply involved in "Building and Institutional Image" . Second, KTI is a Technological Center - a new emerging concept in higher education that has a promise of a bright future as we move toward and into the 21st Centmuy. In both reasons, there is purpose - a purpose for students that is real and challenging and a purpose for an institution which will play an important role in the technological society of the future . Isn't it great to be a part of something with such a purpose? Thomas F . Creech President Robert E. Brown Don Buchwald , Frank Gray Asst. Dean of Admissions Asst. Dean of Academic Affairs Director of OPe1'21f1On21 Affalrs John F. Mahan Dean of Academic Affairs Linca McCall Asst. Dean of Public Affairs Herb Petracek Dean of Student Services james O. Thompson Past President In Memory Of James 0. Thompson, Jr. James O. Thompson, Jr. became the second President of Kansas Technical Insti- tute on October 4, 1971. He resigned, as President, on june 30, 1976 because of his declining health. His progressive illness bgaxaght about his death on February 13, During his tenure as President of the In- stitute he was successful in preserving the school through many a political struggle which threatened to close or relocate the Institution. The last year of his administrative duties was marked by legislative action which transferred control of the Institute from the State Board of Education to the State Board of Regents. Although retired, he lived to see the fulfillment of long years of hard work by the faculty and administration in the action of E. C.P.D. accreditation of the programs at KTI . It is only fitting to pay tribute to Mr. Thompson's contribution to KTI's develop- ment during its early years of sLu'vival. Faculty E A ff? E4-3-3 Keith Andrews Asst. After successfully completing the two-year aircraft maintenance program at KTI, the student will receive a Certificate of Comple- tion which will authorize him to take the FAA licensing examina- tion. After passing the exam, the graduate will be a licensed A 8 P Maintenance Technician. The graduate of the Aeronau- tical Technology program may receive the Associate of Techno- logy degree and would be quali- fied to assist production super- visors in the production, quality and manufacture of aircraft and aircraft components. The Civil Technician must have a considerable store of technical knowledge in a wide variety of subjects. This year's seniors spent much of their time working on advanced surveying problems and tackling the design of airport, highway and railway systems. They were also involved in concrete and structur- al steel design projects. The fresh- men gained valuable experience in the fundamentals of surveying and applications for both concrete and soils. Both classes were very much involved in the building of the KTI logo. At first the computer was used as purely a research tool. However, more recent applications have been found in business, defense and industry The wide range of applications for computers in our modern society has created careers for Engineering Techni clans in many areas of government, business, and industry. It is a challenging profession and one which is very re warding to the individual who enters into the world of computers. 4 , f AXE, ,.P,f, .1 J' ,lip - ,ga V. q,:,, f. v i Q "'. 5 Joni Beam Mickey Belcher Graig A Brummer Mark Chavez Martin D Chrastil james Cordill V 2 J Jay R Dietrich Brenda J Gadd Sylvia L Haggard Howard D I-Iolthaus Charles M Hopkins Chris I-Irabe Steve C johnson De Vaughn Leckron Harold G Lewis Randy L Lohma.nn Michael K Moore Pamela J Nelson -'exif' lf? There is no one job description which correctly describes the activiijes of all electronic Technicians. Many are employed in pure re- search, working to discover new applications, others are involved in service occupations, repairing computers, communications equipment, industrial controls, and other equipment. The 1977 KTI electronics graduates face several interesting challenges. The problems of energy, decreasing natural re- sources, food production, and others will provide the ultimate test of their ability. If the perfor- mance of the past graduates is any indication, they will pass with flying colors. Mitchell J. Ammons Bill Austin Rodney J. Barnes Ronald G. Barnes Gene L. Bates Rodney L. Bos Gordon M. The interest devel- oped from concerned health of- ficers, food inspectors and sani- tary engineers possessing sound foresight with deep dedication to the individual public welfare. KTI is presently expanding a sound basic program with room for individual interest and develop- ment including dual programs with other departments and universities. In the past year the environmental students have made tours of do- mestic water and waste systems, industrial waste control, investi- gated surface water quality and fish kills, and attended the state meetings for the American Water Works Association and Kansas Water Pollution Control Federation Marshall R.
