Thomas Tip O ' Neill Jr. said the United States will prevail and flourish despite problems, both internal and international, facing the nation. O ' Neill, who was speaker of the House of Representatives from 1977 to 1985 and a member of Congress for 34 years, said current attitudes that the problems of today are insurmountable are unrealistic. he social progress of the past 50 years has improved working conditions, provided health protection through Medicare and provided secure retirements through Social Security. Brokaw talked about how television has made our world a global community, and the effect it has on our lives. Before becoming anchor of NBC Nightly News, Brokaw was anchor of NBC News ' Today program for more than five years. He joined the program in 1976.
