Break loose, play games, relax with Spring Fling By Terry Jackson Guys with greased-back hair, girls wearing Ruby Begonia lipstick, beds being pushed down the middle of the street, and 32 people taking baths at the same time — In the same tub. These are Just a few things that happened during the week-long residence hall carnival known as Spring Fling. The festival, sponsored by the K- State Association of Residence Halls, Is a week of free, inter-hall ac- tivities designed to give hall residents a chance to break loose before beginning hard-core studying for spring finals. There you were, remember? You and a couple of friends, standing on the porch of that white house. The lit- tle old lady answered the door, and you asked her if she had a 1945 K- State football ticket or a pig squeal. Remember — it was the scavenger hunt. Then there was the casino party. All the money you lost, you and everyone else losing your shirts. But you kept on playing. Well, why not? The money was free. You got it as you walked In the door. That was Sunday. And on Monday, your whole dorm along with the dorm assigned to be your partner, went over to Weber Arena and tried to stuff as many bodies as possible into a bathtub. You remember. Maybe you were one of the guys sitting on the bottom when West Hall loaded the tub, only to have the entire pile fall over on you. Or maybe you were one of those In the middle of the pile getting squashed and gasping for breath. But it was fun. And that night, as you dragged your aching body around the dorm, the smell of popcorn was everywhere. You and your date grabbed a blanket, tripped down to the lawn in front of Van Zile Hell, watched the movie and passed around those big bags of popcorn. On Wednesday, there was the leadership banquet. Maybe you were one of those honored at the banquet. Remember? For the first time, the candies really were lit .. . and you received a certificate for being a student leader. On Wednesday you went to a se- cond movie in front of Van Zile. Or maybe you were one of those studious persons chosen for honors at the scholarship banquet. And on Thursday you had a day Off: there were no activities schedul- ed. But there were always the beds to decorate, Remember? You hid the bed In the basement of your dorm. The bed decoration contest was scheduled for Saturday, and your hall wanted to win. On Friday, if you had a talent you wanted to share, or maybe If you didn ' t but wanted to hear others per- form, you went to the Catskeller In the Union where there was an open mike. And then Saturday came, and with it the culmination of the week ' s ac- tivities. You helped move your dorm ' s bed outside for the contest. Remember all the people leaning out the windows of the dorm, throwing water balloons? Then the judges voted on the beds. Maybe yours was the one with Willy Wildcat lying sick . . . or the turtle . . . or the sports. Or maybe yours was the bed that won .. . the one with the picket fence, a Swiss clock and a couple who leaned out of the clock, kissed and disappeared again. After the contest was over, you ripped the decorations off the bed and prepared for the race. The bed was reassembled, four girls took their places on the mattress and four guys prepared to push. It all started in front of the Union, remember? And it ended — or was supposed to — down by the Chapel. It was a hard race . . . one bed didn ' t even make it out of the driveway. Whether your bed made it or not, you met down at the Chapel for a picnic. And then the games started. How could you forget those? The ice cream-eating contest in which the ice cream was like rock . . . the bed race where four guys carried a girl . . . the grapefruit pass where the girls would have clobbered the guys if they could have stopped laughing long enough . . . and the tug-of-war which ended up as a mud bath. And Saturday night .. . the final touch on a week of fantastic fun: the Fifties Dance. The band was Lonny Fame and the Beltones. If you are a guy, your hair was probably greased back, and you came complete with pocket comb. If you are a girl, you probably were wearing white bobby socks and a class ring on a chain around your neck. Everyone was chewing bubble gum, oohs and ahhhs were heard everywhere, and there was even a kissing contest. Then, Sunday, things began to return to normal, but It was fun to laugh about the silly times you had. For many, 1972 ' s Spring Fling was their first, for some it was their last, and for others It was their only. But whatever it was, it was fun. 34—Spring Fling
