1ETW T ,HE STORY of Kansas State University in 1964 is neither a collection of events nor a log of progress. It is the story of each of the 9,100 students and the myriad ways in which their desires and accomplishments will shape the events of today and tomorrow. Just as the conscientious student matures during the process and progress of education, so does the university. As knowledge and maturity combine to provide wisdom for the student, the uni- versity expands its efforts to sharpen and temper that wisdom. For today ' s student seeks more than a niche in society he wants to chisel a few of his own, to make way for the future generations. And so it is with the modern university. As it matures, though it covets the lessons of the past, it seeks to secure its place in the future through expanded research, advanced educational programs, new techniques, new facilities and new ideas and attitudes. It is in this spirit that we introduce the 1964 Royal Purple. Herein lies a picture of the present and a glimpse of the future the chronicle of Kansas State University at the crossroads wit h one foot in a permanent past and the other in a promising future.
