Directing the activities of the newly established School of Education is Dean William H. Coffield. Education Division Rates School Status After July action by the Board of Regents, the Departmen t of Education became the second K-State school. Preparing teachers for elementary and secondary levels, the school also provided a graduate program. National Science Foundation grants of more than $15,000 were awarded to the school for in-service training for full-time elementary school teachers. Teaching con- cepts geared to elementary science and math were stressed in classes conducted under the program. Education staff members were con- sultants in school studies such as efficient use of building facilities, use of community resources and improvement of curriculum. Using a $179,430 grant received from the Ford Foundation in 1960, the school pro- vided an opportunity for liberal arts gradu- ates to earn a Master of Science degree and a teaching certificate in 15 months. 28

Appointed by the Governor, Dean C. Clyde Jones serves on the Kansas Council for Economic Analysis. Commerce College Sponsors Seminars Changed from a school to a college in July, 1963, the College of Commerce with the aid of a grant from the Garvey Foundation of Wichita sponsored commerce seminars. Dr. Dale Yoder of Stanford University and Dr. Hans Broder Krohn of the Common Market were on the list of guest speakers. With enrollment in business administra- tion and accounting reaching 650, the faculty positions were increased to 22, compared to 19 last year and 10 in 1955. Dean C. Clyde Jones, administrative head of the college, was also appointed a member of the Kansas Council for Economic Analysis. Edited by Serwood Huneryager, the Man- agement Letter, containing news of interest to Kansas businessmen, began monthly pub- lication under the sponsorship of the college. The college was also host at an educational conference during Commerce Alumni Day which was held during the fall semester. Before his speech at the India Day convocation, Am- bassador B. K. Nehru tours the campus with Pres- ident McCain. Nehru described the Indian economic plight and the plan for developing the economy.
