Assistant Deans Oryal Ebberts and Marjorie Adams and Academic Adviser John Murry assist students. Removing the skull cap from a model of the skele- ton, an anatomy student studies the brain cavity. A S College Buys Research Equipment Purchase of new equipment highlighted the research program in the College of Arts and Sciences. X-ray units were purchased for the geology department. Chemistry experi- menters received new machinery for several research projects. In addition, modern lan- guage facilities were expanded with the in- stallation of a second modern language lab- oratory in Eisenhower Hall. Four students in the Arts and Sciences Honors Program studied last fall in the United States on Woodrow Wilson Fellow- ships, four were abroad on Fulbright Schol- arships and six were in Germany on Ex- change Scholarships. Ten students won Na- tional Science Foundation Scholarships. A psychology experimenter guides a cat whose vision is obstructed and notes the animal ' s adaptations. 26

A S Emphasizes Three -Fold Policy Insuring effective classroom instruction, providing proper advising for students, and encouraging research were the goals for the College of Arts and Sciences. In an attempt to improve the advising pro- gram, some instructors were relieved of full- time teaching responsibilities and assigned as part-time advisers. For the first two years students retained the same general adviser and then transferred to individual advisers in their major fields. There were 3,466 stu- dents enrolled in Arts and Sciences. John Chalmers assumed his duties as dean of the college of arts and sciences, replacing William Bevan who became vice-president for academic affairs. Chalmers, a Rhodes Scholar and graduate of Cornell University, came from an administrative position at the University of Wyoming. Chalmers ' major field of interest is economic theory. Associate Dean William Stamey represents the Col- lege of Arts and Sciences on University committees. Completing his first year at K-State, Dean Chal- mers is a Rhodes Scholar and graduate of Cornell. 25
