Collecting a milk protein sample, a dairy science research assistant seeks additional uses for milk. Research in the related fields of agriculture is a vital function of the College of Agriculture. Agriculture Includes Teaching, Research Serving the people of Kansas with three divisions resident instruction, extension and research the College of Agriculture listed 713 students and 112 instructors. Dean of Agriculture Glenn E. Beck, in his fourth year at the helm, co-ordinated activities of the three branches. He was responsible for the budget and staffing of the college. Construction of two new buildings was completed during the year. Leland Call Hall, named for Dean Emeritus L. E. Call, was dedicated early in March. The structure houses the dairy and poultry sciences. A wind erosion laboratory, designed for experi- mental needs, was in use by February. Under a contract with the Agency for In- ternational Development, K-State staff members traveled to Nigeria to develop a new college. Agronomy head R. V. Olson was selected as dean of agriculture at Ahm- adue Bello University at Zaria, Nigeria. Serving as Director of resident instruction, Duane C. Acker is also associate dean of agriculture. Directing the College of Agriculture, Dean Glenn H. Beck co-ordinates the three agricultural areas. 20

Dedicated in March ceremonies, Leland Call Hall houses the poultry and dairy science departments. The unit contains an office wing, research labora- tories and the poultry and dairy processing plants. Experiment Stations Assist Ag Research Recognizing the importance of developing new and improved agricultural products, the division of research carried out over 400 sep- arate projects. Research was conducted at experiment stations across the state. Provision for a Mass Spectormeter was made by a $100,000 grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The meter, only one of its kind, was installed in Willard Hall to detect and measure minute quantities of organic compounds. Development of a hybrid wheat seed on a commercial basis was a priority project at the experiment station at Hays. Forestry re- search sought uses for one million trees dis- tributed yearly by forestry extension. s director of co-operative agricultural extension service, Harold E. Jones supervises extension work. Assisting with direction of students, Frank Carpen- ter is assistant director of resident instruction. 22 .. . A-W-.
