Administrators Head University Activities With a membership of the deans of each college and school, the newly formed Aca- demic Council co-ordinated academic pro- grams, defined new standards of academic excellence and made recommendations to the President. Working with non-academic mat- ters, the Administrative Council considered salary scales and faculty distribution. Max Milbourn, assistant to the President, served as chairman of the General Scholar- ship committee and the Public Relations Council. In President McCain ' s absence, Mil- bourn assumed the executive duties. Other administrative officials supervised University and student services. Managing the 330,000-volume Farrell Library, J. W. Kraus added 30,000 books to the library. Housing Director A. Thornton Edwards served on a committee to plan a cafeteria and 600-person dormitory to be pa rt of a housing complex northeast of the campus. Semester fees of Student Health, headed by H. P. As business manager, Daniel Beatty has charge of the preparation of the University ' s annual budget. Vice President of Academic Affairs William Bevan is former Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Vice-President Emeritus A. D. Fall Students Break Enrollment Records With students enrolled from every state except Nevada, fall enrollment set a record of 9175, three per cent above last year. The College of Arts and Sciences boasted the largest enrollment with 3457 students, the College of Engineering and Architecture, totaled from figures taken before their di- vision, followed with 1720 students. Gradu- ate School enrolled 1020 students. The count included students from all 105 counties in Kansas and 476 international students from 60 countries. India claimed the most foreign students with 179, and China followed with 86. The Philippines were in third place with 16 students. With the help of a new IBM machine, approximately 500,000 enrollment cards were processed for fall and spring registration. As dean of admissions and records, Ellsworth M. Gerritz supervises the handling of course cards. Throngs of students crowd Ahearn Field House to enroll in fall classes while seeking help from ad- visers and instructors. Enrollment increased by 2500 over the last five years, nearly 35 per cent.
