Gathman... a Friend to All We, the staff of the 1970 Kanillio dedicate our yearbook to one of our most admired and respected teachers, Mr. Dennis Gathman. From our association with him during the past two years, we have recognized his integrity and sincerity in guiding us. We have come to know that whenever we needed help while struggling through Biology I and Il, Chemistry, and Physics, that he would be there with help and encouragement. His patient and able spon- sorship of class meetings, the Homecoming Dance, and the Junior-Senior Prom is greatly appreciated by the Junior Class. Mr. Gathman has actively participated in extracurricular activities. He has been one of our biggest supporters of the athletic program, backing the Bulldogs not only at basketball games, where he has been scorekeeper and fan bus sponsor, but in track and baseball as well. I We have learned great lessons from his 'fwizardlyn teaching and have spent many memorable hours in lab, even though sometimes many of us hit a usnagf' In knowing him, we have come to recognize Mr. Gathman not only as an out- standing teacher, but as a man with an amiable and genial personality, who has un selfishly given his time, energy, and knowledge to the well being of the entire stu- dent body. Truly, Mr. Gathman, you are a friend to us all, Administration sf fi: A Arthur Leeth, Superintendent Mr. Shoot, principal of KHS a short two years, has served his position well. His avid interest in the well-being of the student body is made evident by the fact that he is a friend to all. Often the man behind the scenes is not appreciated for he is given the respon- sibility ofthe enforcements of rules. However, this individual is often the backbone of the good educational system. Good Leadership... an Essential Not only is Mr. Leeth efficient as a superintendent, but also during his three years at KHS, he has contributed his time by occasionally filling in as a substitute teacher. His interest in the students is shown by his watchful eye and his persistant attendance at all school activities. For a responsibility so tremendous . . . ajob well done. John D. Shoot, Principal WW! The N.H.S. is made up of sophomores, juniors, and seniors chosen by the faculty. Induction ceremonies are held in the spring and the fall of each year. In the fall juniors and seniors only are inducted, and in the spring sophomores are elected as probationary members. In the following fall these newly inducted sophomores re- ceive full membership. The Honor Society sponsors many activities each year such as: a Carnival, an alumni basketball game and chilli supper for the Myra Barker Scholarship Fund, and the student exchange days. This year the members have added to their activities a tutoring plan. Other students who want help ask the N.H.S. members for tutoring during school free periods or after school. Also the N.H.S. is planning to have a College Day this year. in which a panel of college stu- dents are asked questions as to college itself. As the Kanillio staff of 1970 learned, it takes a great deal of time, effort, and patience to put a yearbook such as this one together. The year started out with the election of three officers: Junior Editor, Secretary, and Treasurer. Then all four officers and their sponsor, Mrs. Cox, attended a yearbook seminar at the University of Illinois sponsored by the Inter-Col- legiate Press. It then fell into full swing with every member doing his best to sell many Ads and Boosters to raise money for this yearbook. Time flew as staff mem- bers spent many evenings redoing layouts, placing them on final mats, and writing copy. After all of this had been done, everything was turned in to Mrs. Cox who proofread every page and then mailed them to the publishers. As time ran out, it became a mad rush as there was much copy to be made and more money to be raised. Even though there were many disappointments, not one staff member would say that they didnit have fun. 48 Kanillio Staff Kanillio Staff 1970 ROW ONE: Keith Honnold, Mary Saxton, Janette Webb, Marylee Hawkins, Camille Hammond, Lois Turner, Melanie Honnold, Joyce Hawkins, Mrs. Cox. These tive girls also worked at bake sales and work days in which they earned money to buy their uniforms. If anyone deserves credit for ambition ingenuity, and down-right hard Work, these devoted girls do. 56 Cheerleaders The Junior Varsity cheerleaders, consisting of Cathy Martin Sue Hanner, Joyce Hawkins, Libby Stiff, and Julie Hawkins, have done a very good job this year in supporting the JV team and promoting spirit among the Kansas fans. Although many people don't consider the JV team as important as the Varsity these five girls have stood behind the team all the way urging them on and encouraging the fans to back their team. J.V. Proving this is their baseball record which was per- fect throughout the District and Re- gional Conferences, up to the Sectional , where they were finally defeated. The size of this year's team is some- A what smaller, but size made no dif- ference as their determination was great, again, possibly because of their improved schooling. l l Q I 2 ws 7 Hz' rf' 'ix V s if HEAVYWEIGHT CHEERLEADERS: Melinda Hawkins, Debbie Wright Gale Gough, Sr Debbie Conine. They have remem- bered the prom, the homecoming, work days, ballgames, fresh-soph parties, initiation, and many more events. Some thay may wish to remember and some they may want to forget. But most of them would say that they Wouldn't have been the same Without them. Donna Grafton Danny Carpentar Jane Conine Camille Hammond Max Hawkins Miriam Kirkham Jerry Pinnell 64 Seniors Denny Huston Mandy Hutchinson When the class of '70 entered its senior year, members ot' the class began to think about what they would be doing in the future. The fact that this was their last year of high school caused quite a bit of excitement. Application for en- trance into college and deciding upon the field he wished to enter kept the average senior busy. ln December they measured for caps and gowns and the excitement began to grow rapidly.
