We, as Osteopathic medical students, are formulating our membership in the Osteopathic profession. Our four years at KCCOM are quite short in comparison to our active years of practice. We have a tremendous opportunity and we will make every effort to prepare ourselves and thereby carry on the progress our profession has made. Gerald E. Finke -Nr .1 S . I I I 4 A 4 0 'Q Q. Approved For Intern And Resident Training 8 Rotating internships A Non-Profit Institution 3 Surgical residencies Operated by a Lay Board 2 Radiology residencies Of Trustees For An 3 Internal Medicine residencies Organized Staff Of 1 Pathology residency Qualified Physicians And 2 Anesthesiology residencies Surgeons 2 Million Hospital Underway This new two million dollar hospital, which includes professional suites for physicians was announced by Carl L. Holder, chairman of the Board of Directors of Doctors Osteopathic Hospital. The four-floor hospital adds 156 medical and surgical beds plus a seven bed intensive coronary care unit. Each floor has isolation beds for infectious patients. Each floor was designed with double-corridor, a prototype unit, that will shorten travel distance by placing all patient floor service facilities near the juncture of radial arms, so that from the nurses' stations at thejuncture of the arms to the end of the patient areas there would be no service facilities to lengthen distance and increase travel. Both are related to functions nursing and single corridor design. The entire unit will be air-conditioned. The first floor which is the United States version and contribution in basic prototype design to the hospital field is expandable so that ancillary facilities such as X-ray, Laboratory, Nuclear Medicine and Pathology Lab can be increased in size as the patient area are expanded. The intensive care unit is also expandable to 12 beds. Service conduits and other services needed for the expansion are installed with this construction program. Two additional operating rooms have been added to the existing operating room suite and the operating room recovery area was increased to eight beds. Each of the existing nursing floors completed in 1966 have been expanded to 32 bed nursing floors. The obstetrical and gynecology unit, located on the fourth floor, remain at 10 beds and 12 bassinets, but a large waiting room was added for expectant fathers. The 10 bed medical-surgical pediatric has been remodeled to have separated isolation and an adolescent nursing unit. The emergency suite was expanded and a large waiting room and an out-patient office was added to this service. In order to provide for this health center, the Board procured two large buildings which have been demolished. Cameo Apartment building on West 10th Street was bought from the Redevelopment Authority and the Salem Evangelical Church was purchased recently. The church property made way for the new hospital building. The hospital raised the money for this multi-million dollar health center by selling first mortgage bonds and direct obligation sinking fund notes thru the B.C. Ziegler Co., West Bend, Wisconsin.
