PRES! DENTS MESSAGE The greatest need of today is that young people shall have faith -faith in themselves, in others, in the improva- bility of mankind, faith that they can create a better world. ln an age of cynicism, that has doubted everything represented by the idealism of the past-Q from the simple virtues of human character to the great ideals of na- tional and world des- tiny-a renewal of an intelligent faith is the greatest need. cynicism has resulted President G. W. Diemer from materialism and ' an extreme view of the pragmatic conception of education, neither of which has provided lasting or worthy satisfactions in life. The madness of the World War, the riotous living in the decade which followed the War, the crash of material fortunes during the depression, all combined to confuse young people and to distort their ideals as to the real and enduring values of life. But the bottom has been reached. We are beginning to see beyond material goals to those great spiritual ideals which alone will assure an enduring civilization. ln this reinterpretation of values, the teacher must be a leader. What he knows is important, his techniques and methods are valuable, but his faith and philosophy of life are of primary concern. What is your faith? What are the controlling motives of your life? Do you have a faith and a philosophy that will inspire those whom you will teach? These are some of the questions which each student in Teachers College should ask of himself. li il
