' The election of otlicers was a spirited af- fair, there being five noininees for each office ex- cept one, and the successful candidates winning only after a hard and close race. The first class project discussed was that of putting out the Qwaissa and after the class decided to do this, members of the class immediately began work on the annual. Next the sophomore class initi ated the movement ol' having 'Junior College rings and pins. The freshman class was con- sulted, then the order was given -to Howard Brandenburg, a graduate in the class of 1926. The last important class project was the annual sophomore dance given immediately following' the freshman banquet. The sophomores were well-represented in the Art and Science clubs, having two offi- cers including the President in each. During the first semester there were seventeen Sophomores andtwo Sophomore officers, in the Student Coun- cil, with about the same proportion during the second semester. There were two officers and several members of the French Club from the Sophomore class. There were five sopho- more men on the football team, and the same number on the basketball team. The sopho- mores were also wellsrepresented on the Scrawl and Jayhawk staffs, in the orchestra, and in dramatics. .1O, 1 - . In 1926 the second edition was presented and it is with a great deal of pleasure that We present this, the third edition of the Cwaissa. The staff which edited the first hook initiated the plan of pro- ducing a year hook Without the aid of the advertising medium, Thus some other plan had to he adopted. In keeping with thisplan the staff this year took charge of the production of The Whole Town's Talkinvgn, the third of the series of plays presented hy the Ndunior College Playersu. I In presenting the Cwaissa the staff desires to present a diary of the interesting events and friendships enjoyed during our Jun- ior College days. If in future years you can turn to this hook and he reminded of those friendships made throughout your Junior College days, We can count our work a success. This is the first yearthat there has been a regular, staff to edit the paper for both semesters. The publication was entered in contests this spring. The Jayhawk has been under the direction of Nliss Eleanor Baptist, Journalism Instructor. THE SCRAWL The first issue of The Scrawl appeared on the campus Febru- ary 1, 1927, with Paul Goodwin as editor. It was published as an experimental literary venture, but the success of the first issue led the staff to put out a second issue April 26. , The purpose ot The Scrawl is to provide an expression for the embryonic literary talent of the College, and to encourage better writing. ln creating a policy to carry out this purpose, the staff chose to make The Scrawl neither high-brow nor of the other ex- treme, but rather a nlagazine of a pleasing college tone. A The staff was chosen from students in journalism, English, and other classes, who were interested in a magazine. Because some of the staff membersvvere assuming heavier activities, and many out- side were becoming interested, the staff was reorganized the second semester, with Justine Toler as editor, and Eugene I-Iopton as busi- ness managerl ' - 27 l I H , ,. 1- -- Y,-. - -,- H V1-vt-Y-.4 ., W, V '35, . xi, - -- -' --ask - :-Q.-a:f,:1,4., .:.z:,.:- f,'-'5Y1'?1f ----- ' 4 E ,,,,?,,,...t.,,ffp.q,:u.,-:-vw 562 .,,,- . fi Y- --,---,- --- V-M .,,- f THE JUNIOR COLLEGE OWAISSA THE ARTS CLUB The Arts Club is one unit of the College Club. FOOTBALL Last fall Junior College was introduced into the realm of foot- ball for the first time. The large squad that turned out was very enthusiastic and at one time there were enough men out to have two teams in practice. For a beginning team Junior College tackled a hard schedule playing teamsthat had been playing together for two years or more. Although the scores were mostly one sided the team did not lose its fighting spirit and- grew stronger as the season prog- ressed. Before the Thanksgiving game yellow journals came out with the slogan, Great Scott, why not, get hot, Beat Fort Scottn The student body was expecting a good game from our boys and they were not disappointed. Many humorous incidents helped to keep the spirit of the game up and to give the campus something to talk about, such things as, the number of men big Kreiger laid out, and lVIacH lVlcClintics, black eye. Taken as a whole the past football season was very satifactory and the student. body is looking foward to the coming season with high hopes for a successful season. 44 9-foo Q a v 6 I 1 l N I 1 1 TI-IE JUNIOR COLLEGE OWAISSA 4 Charles Gustafson, better known among the College stu- dents as Gus , came to Junior College in 1925 from Shurtleff College. Gus', piloted the foot- ball team through a hard fought season and produced the best basketball team the college has yet turned out. Gus's greatest trial was the track team which he managed to get going by con- stant spurring Roy A. Dillon assumed the respon- sibility of filling the position of athletic manager. Dillon really was the main stay in the football and basketball teams. lVluch credit must be given to Dillon for the success ot the different teams, al- though he refuses to be the goat and take the blame for their failures. 48 1 -- ,. , Y , , , , W , I T , ,s.gs- wuf..: - ss.- , srizaa-.-eziegzna-.sf4.:sa3.si-A-:gals II I. During the summer of 1925 taught swimming at the Univers- ity of Colorado. For the past two years, 1925-26 lVliss Hill has been employed in the phys- ical education department at Bethany College, at Lindsborg, L Kansas. Through Miss Hill's efforts a lively interest has been created this year in gymnasium floor E work, swimming, and the vari- C C ous other sports. p Girls' Basket Ball as an inter-school competitive sport, was discontinued in the Junior College this year. ln making this move the Junior College follows the lead of practically every College in. the State. I Under the plan substituted this year a large number of girls were able to learn the game of basket ball and to take part in actual competition. About 80 girls took part in a preliminary tourna- ment at the beginning of the season. From these players a first and second team was picked for participation in the High School Class tournament. Competition was keen and some good garnes resulted. l Two games with the Night School Girls Team result- Xed in Junior College victories. A maximum of 150 points toward an athletic letter, may be earned in Basket Ball. Points are given for coming out for prac- tice, playing in the preliininarytournainent, making first or second team, playing in required number of games, and for passing the skill test in basket ball which is given at the close of the season. Eighteen girls earned points in Basketball this year. I :'- kc :- Q 'L N,- 50 . , , , TI-IE JUNIOR COLLEGE ONVAISSA K CLUB ln the fall of 1924 the first K Club was organized while lVlr. Socially speaking, the members of this notable class, the Junior College girl, divide themselves into Larterettes, associate Delphis, and free lances. Larterettes are common to the club and usually passed on to avoid anything beyond amateur friendships. In short, they combine to make brief cases. Associate Delphis, on the other hand, are more stable. Moreover, they are usually an asset during auditorium study hours. The third class, that of the free lance is more heterogeneous, as the name and common characteristic indi- cate. Often they gather, in groups particularly at college events in order to assert their independence. Again the next time they are likely to make a raid, as true free lance conquistadors. Intellectually, they fall into classes determined by the degree to which they aspire, namely, A.lVI., absolutely marve1ous:lVI.D moderately dumb, and A.B., altogether beautiful. The absolutly marvelous Junior College girl is a vertable paradox, aftermbeing known as a member of one of the classes just described. But just as surely as her wave is permanent, when her rhetoric theme is read runs in marvelous liquid diction through the rapids and ov- er the falls. The moderat. ly dumb girl is a.lready cut out to be either awife or an instructor, for she always answers a question in class with another question: What was the question? or It is such and such a way---is it notn The third class ofthe Junior College girl is extinct. 5 si ' L ' ,gl ,ykgk ,' 1 ,rx ix , U E A in THE JUNIOR COLLEGE OWAISSA DEDICATION To the spirit of friendship that exists between , the Larters and the Delphis, we dedicate this section.
