The men went to work with the ambition to put K. C. Junior College on the basketball map and with hard work and good coaching the team that took the floor in the first game was smart, willing, and tough. Three games were put in the win column before the tide was turned. and a losing streak broke across the horizon. The few fans who followed the team through the season like to believe that these early games were of the type the team was competent to play, but fate and the school officials ruled that defeats should come thick and fast and conflicting dates virtually legislated the Blue.- birds off the practice court. T lWith all its handicaps, however, it is safe to say that the season just past was the most successful the College has had. The opponents selected were as strong as many of the Kansas and Missouri conference teams and the low per- centage could be overlooked because of this fact. N Charles Gustafson, a Shurtlefl' College athlete in football, basket- ball, and baseball, took over the Kansas City teams last fall. Before this year he S had never attempted to play basketball, but -when he came out for practice his my natural ability soon showed itself. Cy was given an opportunity to play in the Um, first game and made such a favorable impression that he played in all the follow- '61 ing games, missing only five minutes during the entire season.
