He led his team in scoringiwith a total of 135 points , Joe Phillips, forward, led Russell in scoring honors until injuries forced him to the bench. Joe was especially formidable when teamed with Russell. His natural basketball sense made him valuable both at shooting and as a defen- sive player. i I Irvine Baker, forward, was the speediest man on the team. His speed, his aggressiveness, and his eye for the basket ,made him a valuable man in spite of his size. Because of his lack of height he wasused chiefly as a reserve the latter part of tha season. Sparky was especially deadly on close shots. M Wynn Hugg, center, could play his best when the rest of the team was off. Wynn was not. discovered until' mid-season but took and active part in the later games.. Haggis floor work wasf only moderate, but his basket making ability more than made up forthis. The men went to work with the ambition to put K. C. Junior College on the basketball map and with hard work and good coaching the team that took the floor in the first game was smart, willing, and tough. Three games were put in the win column before the tide was turned. and a losing streak broke across the horizon. The few fans who followed the team through the season like to believe that these early games were of the type the team was competent to play, but fate and the school officials ruled that defeats should come thick and fast and conflicting dates virtually legislated the Blue.- birds off the practice court. T lWith all its handicaps, however, it is safe to say that the season just past was the most successful the College has had. The opponents selected were as strong as many of the Kansas and Missouri conference teams and the low per- centage could be overlooked because of this fact.
