In appreciation ot their unselfish 'service and thein- terest they have taken in the students as individuals, we dedicate the 1926 OWAISSA to the FACULTY. Q!FQcg3+ ry! Because of the youth of Junior College the h spent 'heir energy on school instead of class projects, with the they a e done nothing to distinguish themselves as a separate organization. , However, the spirit ot the class has been of the best. Thisltrait has showni itself in everything it did, including elections, when three of the officers were elected by a majority of one vote. A Q In numbers, the class of 1926 is about three times as large as that of 1925, so naturally it fell on this class, when freshmen, to take an early lead in school affairs. The group efesponded whole-heartedly to its obligations and car- ried its full share of the burden, climaxing the year with a banquet for the first graduates. I Officers the freshman year were Howard Brandenbui g, Arthur Smith, Elfreda Waite, and Harley Miller. , A .U -. ,f wwf-iff., 1'1i '4'fv!- A-fi -f , , . .V - , W 5 f -,.. ., , Y 1 . f Q, . f L, V , , , 1 I N .k 3 ov gf, , A uf, , X, s , ,- .X f X-, X f - R, ,I Y, , , ii, . ., . ,. To the casual observer, this class was just like any other, With' its only distinguishing feature being a large enrollment. Howevper, to one more than passively interested, it was easily discernable that in this group was life and energy in plenty. N ln order to show its superiority in athletics, the freshman had a football game with the sophomores and convinced the upperclassmen that the class o '27 was to be taken into consideration. Keeping up its record in sports, thef freshmen filled every first string position on the basketball squad and supplied members for the other teams. . After taking its full share ofthe work and honors which came tothe school thru dramatics, debate, and music, the freshmen ended the year by getting com- pletely back into the good graces of the sophomores with a banquet with the graduates as guests of honor. . 17p Imogene Ransdell Donald Rose Claude Ruby Dorothy Seitz Marvin Schlappi Ruth Stewart Robert Trotter Jack Wood Carl White Elizabeth VVheeler horvald Vveinhold Bernard Zuber Frances Cole Grace Eller Wilnia Fulkerson Wynne l-lugg Edwin lVlalley I-loward lVlitchener Thomas Mason Vvillard Phillips f All Helen Finch LeRoy Francis Floyd Forbes Paul ' Goodwin Cameron Hanna Ruth Jackson A Lula Johnson Dorothy Johnson Iona Klock Cyrus Long Merle Lundy Harold Mercer Louise Marten George Martin Herbert Prater Dorothy Pearson - Velma Parks Eugene Reeves Nlary Rankin Marvin Roth m ff 4 Q x , ' U in F If . :cg . fp. f .-1 , 1 in V3 7 ' 1 fa? 7 - srl, im.. , 'ff 947 M1 C. ,,. 5 1-fx, fx:-Q .1 Cai , tbl 11222 , id f , P ff' X . 9? if way. Since that first day, the institution has prospered, until this year it had a total enrollment of 210, with a graduating class of 37. Last year 16 were graduated., Nl. E. Pearson as chancellor and Clarence T. Rice as dean were head of the college its first year, and had Working with them a faculty of nine, with no teacher giving full time to college Work. The instructors the first year were W. F. Brown, Roy A. Dillon, Lucy T. Dougherty, Harry P. Johnson, Hallie Lasley, Sadie B. Mann, EthelVaughan, Nlaude B. Van Cleave, and Christine Wenrich. This year the college had sixteen instructors, teaching practically all the fresh- man and sophomore courses offered anywhere in the state. The spring after its opening, the college was approved by the K. U. inspec- tors and last year received full standing at the university. With this approval, it seems safe to say that Junior College is really organized as more than a. high school extension in actuality if not in name. p U SPECIALS A A KRIEGER FITCH A JONES SNIITI-I FARLEY This year, for the first time, Junior College had a department for special students, those with junior standings and those taking college courses but not eligible for entrance as regular students. i ' Among those with junior rating were five members of the first graduating class: Walter Danneberg, Arthur Jones, Clarence Krieger, Clifton Smith, and Lloyd Fitch.i Qthers in the group were Nliss Dixie Allen and Alan Farley. A ln addition to these, the school had a large number of High School students taking less than ten hours of college work, and a few students from outside who wanted training in certain subiects but did not want to enroll in the regular courses. I - f J Where Bluebird Athletes Condition ffiw , EXTRA-CURRICLILAR ACTIVITIES Extra-curricular activities were started in 1923 with the formation of a basketball team under lVIr. Dillon. Kept in the city by a lack of money, this squad paved the way for the next team, coached by f'Robin,' Riley, which 'ended an intercollegiate schedule with a .385 record. i lVIr. Riley added track to the list of sports that year, but after an overwhel- ming defeat at the hands of Kansas City, Nlo., the team disbanded, to return in 1926. Tennis, baseball, and swimming were added to the list of sports under Coach Gustafson. ' ' 4 The Jayhawk was also brought into existence the first winter, with Ethel Nlinger sponsor. When Nliss Nlinger married lVIr. Dillon, Nliss Baptist took over the paper and raised it to a bi-weekly publication in 1925. This year it was issued weekly. The Cwaissa was added to the publication list last year by the first grad- uating class. Dramatics were started last year under the direction of Nlissn Dougherty and Nlr. Johnson and proved a success from the start. Debate got off to a flying start last year with lVIr. Johnson as coach and succeeded in bringing Kansas City its first state championship. Nlusic was also started the first year witha chorus directed by lVIr. Dillon. Last year the department, which had been taken over by Nlr. Riley, presented an operetta. This year, for the first time, credit was ofered in music. 11 fi ggi 1 23 U i , 'Icy ev 13 ... . X w 1772, Ju-J 00,5 . mmf E . 27. ii ' f-,N ,M f I . Laboring under difficulties from a lack of money and publication facili- ties, the first staff presented a book that would do credit to a group with far more advantages. ' With such a model before it, the staff ofthe 1926 annual has endeavored to issue a book that would come up to the standard set by its successor. ln keeping with the plan adopted in 1925, itgwas decided to have no adver- tising so other means were searched for in an efort to present a larger and more complete book 'vvithoutincreasing the cost to the students. ln order to accom- plish this, the staff took over the management of The Boomerangn, spring play presented by the Drama Club. , ln overcoming the handicap of a low budget, however, the staff received valuable cooperation from outside, and wishes especially to express its gratitude to Paul S. Phelps and the Central 1-ligh School printing department, Nlaurice Harmon, Nliss Lillian Bohl, lV1iss Virginia Boatman, Paul Emerson, and George Hazen. He led his team in scoringiwith a total of 135 points , Joe Phillips, forward, led Russell in scoring honors until injuries forced him to the bench. Joe was especially formidable when teamed with Russell. His natural basketball sense made him valuable both at shooting and as a defen- sive player. i I Irvine Baker, forward, was the speediest man on the team. His speed, his aggressiveness, and his eye for the basket ,made him a valuable man in spite of his size. Because of his lack of height he wasused chiefly as a reserve the latter part of tha season. Sparky was especially deadly on close shots. M Wynn Hugg, center, could play his best when the rest of the team was off. Wynn was not. discovered until' mid-season but took and active part in the later games.. Haggis floor work wasf only moderate, but his basket making ability more than made up forthis. Hisfavorite play was to furnble the ball, stumble over it, pick .it up, and make-a basket. ' Q Q -ff r fi h J J 'N vi. The men went to work with the ambition to put K. C. Junior College on the basketball map and with hard work and good coaching the team that took the floor in the first game was smart, willing, and tough. Three games were put in the win column before the tide was turned. and a losing streak broke across the horizon. The few fans who followed the team through the season like to believe that these early games were of the type the team was competent to play, but fate and the school officials ruled that defeats should come thick and fast and conflicting dates virtually legislated the Blue.- birds off the practice court. T lWith all its handicaps, however, it is safe to say that the season just past was the most successful the College has had. The opponents selected were as strong as many of the Kansas and Missouri conference teams and the low per- centage could be overlooked because of this fact. Staff disclaims all responsibilityj A t Jack Myers, by virtue of supremely indifferent attitude toward the para- doxical sex, was declared the Nleanest Nlan, altho pressed closely by Foulks and McKinley with their aversion to late dates. Picking the Nleanest Girl was duck soup. Helen Tatum won for reasons that are as numerous as Dan Wilson's alibis. Chief qualifications were a fond- ness for last minute date vetoes and a habit of paying for refreshments with mere money. Also, as Brandy fwe thinkit was hej remarked, she is' like an old Ford, she has to be choked for ten minutes before she warms up. Highly overrated was the minority report on Pauline Bruce as the most satisfying date, but on the counsel of one of the chauffeurs, whose ideas carried considerable weight, the majority elected her, but with reservations. Velma was talked about but Wynn Hugg's testimony was considered incompetent, irrelevant, and immaterial. ' The Hottest Date sweepstakes on the masculine side was neck and neck affair won by Ralph Emerson, Dick Haught's name was up but the boy was thrown out after Ruth Stewart had been consulted.
