A year of progress for Kankakee schools children who live east of the Illinois Central Railroad tracks and north of the Kankakee River. Although this building is chiefly for the junior high students, several rooms are designed for senior high courses. Among these are a machine shop, auto-mechanics room, and a mechanical drawing room. A music room may be shared with the senior high. Special rooms for junior high pupils are two industrial arts rooms, an art room, a library, a mechanical drawing room, a visual aids room a home economics room princi pals offices a nurses and health service room a cafeteria a photography room gen eral science rooms anda large room capaci ty of 140 for use in tests and programs The auditorium in the senior high school will be used for large school wide assemblies The gymnasium is mainly for the yunior high students However the varsity basketball team will practice and hold its home games in the 3500 seating capacity gym A sliding division panel will allow separated gym classes to function at the same time and the overflow of senior high physical education students may be taken care of Many of the special rooms will be dupli cated in the West Iunior High School located 'fm t' wha 22223 rf on Calista Avenue. Drawing 7th, 8th, and 9th graders from Longfellow, Washington, Iefferson, Lafayette, and part of Departmental Grade Schools, the school will accommodate 400 to 500 pupils. These will include children living west of the Illinois Central tracks and south of the river. The school, containing an auditorium, gymnasium, and cafeteria, along with other special rooms, is expected to be ready for operation by September. Included in the two-story addition to Steu- ben Grade School are four class rooms and a multiple purpose room equipped with a kitchen cafeteria a stage baskets and a seating capacity of approximately 100 which is used as a gym auditorium or cafeteria as the occasion demands Community interest in the whole project was high as bonds were floated for S2 125 000 Information on building progress was sup plied by the local newspaper and radio sta tion A mild winter enabled the general con tractor I L Simmons and Company to con tinue with both exterior and intenor work in the school buildings School houses are the republican line of fortifications and by instituting a modern school system Kankakee is striving to attain that goal 3 t twritgwi f ?
