A rousing pep session in the afternoon fired up the student body, assuring a huge crowd for that night ' s big game. Presentations at half-time in- cluded the Kougar marching band and drum corps, the class floats, and the queen and princess candidates and escorts. Although they fought valiantly, the Kougars were unable to hold their own against a strong North Newton defense, losing 6 - 0 . Students spent the remainder of the evening dancing to the music of Kustom Deluxe. Seniors Dominate PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE! Many nights were spent after school in practice for both the senior and junior powder puff teams. Learning positions, plays, and defenses just barely touched the amount of pre- paring that went into the big game. The night of the game arrived and the juniors met the seniors face-to- face on the playing field. At half- time, with the score tied at 0, the game was called because of a sud- den storm and rescheduled for Thursday after school. The seniors downed the juniors 14-0 in the last half, earning the award which senior coach Mr. Leo Hummel and senior captain Mimi DeBarge re- ceived at a later pep session. Coaching the juniors was Mr. John Thomas. CONGRATULATIONS SENIORS!!! Bryan Leturgez was hurt on the first play of the Jamboree and wasn ' t able to play again until three games later. He then was reinjured in the fifth game and was out for two more. Dave Allbritten missed two ballgames with a broken nose and Tucker VanKeppel could ot play the entire season due to a knee injury suffered in the opening practice of the year. These people were potential All-Conference players and were missed dearly during their absence. Other players, however, some younger and some inexperienced, came on along with the seasoned veterans that we had left and gave yeoman performances. South New- ton and North Newton were two games lost in the last minute by less than a touchdown. All in all, the four wins and six losses tie the 1971 team for the third best team in the school ' s history. The coaches and players are looking forward to the best season ever next year. -Coach Tim Albert Senior Bryan Leturgez received a full schol- arship to Purdue. Jim Jenkins received a four-year letter award for very outstanding achievement. In All-Conference Eric Green, defensive tackle, and Brian L ' Huillier, line- backer, made the first team. On honorable mention were Troy Jabaay, offensive tack- le, and Jim Jenkins, kicking specialist, Bruce Williamson won the Tackle Chari Award by accumulating the most tackles. Three year letter award winners were Bryan Leturgez, Brian L ' Huillier, Gary Shirkey, Scott Jungles, Melvin Wireman, Scott Grevenstuk, and Troy Davis. The girls must learn to take criticism along with the praise. This year ' s team began to show that confi- dence toward the end of the season. Hope fully, we can begin the season with the con- fidence and aggressiveness necessary to become a winner. Probably our best season game was against Crown Point. The girls played with more en- thusiasm and confidence than they had all season. They served well and were dig- ging up over 75% of Crown Point ' s spikes and dinks. The girls finished the season by placing second in the sectional against last year ' s sectional winner-Hebron. They played very well in the sectiondl. However, the championship match found them rather tense and somewhat intimidated by He- bron. We have a good looking eighth grade team moving up next year. Plus, the JV team from this past season had an excellent record. Therefore, I ' m expecting a much better season next year. -Coach Deb Flynn This year ' s captains were Marla Pierce and Mary Longstreth. VARSITY VOLLEYBALL 55 JV 9 Volleyball JV Coach-Bill Koslovsky Freshman Coach • Judy Huke “The girls were tremendous to work with. Our major problem was a time lapse factor. We had only six matches, and so we had some weeks with no games at all. I know it was hard for the girls to stay up with so little competition. Hard practices with little grati- fication in between makes for a long sea- son. -Coach Huke This year ' s freshmen team, led by team captains Kathy Kros and Debbie Wetzel, had a seasonal record of 2-5. Conference record was 0-4. They had a 56% serving average and a 49% serve reception aver- age. Kathy Kros led with the most ace serves- 19 all season. Lynette Nannenga was close behind with 18. Lisa Helms led in serve percentages with 63%. Cheryl Ku- piainen led in serve reception percentages with 56%. A great game was played against Hanover Central with the KV girls winning in two games 15-5 and 15-12. A top performance was seen in the game against Thomas Jefferson. Five freshmen played on the JV team all season. One played on the varsity level-Bobbi Cox. JV played a great season with a a season record of 13-5. The game that I ' ll remember most is the championship game of the regional. The team played hard and well in earning the school ' s first regional championship. “The game that cost the Kougars an unde- feated regular season will not be soon for- gotten. Highland won the exciting and pres- sure filled game on a 55 ft. shot at the buzz- er. Both teams played well in what could have been the most exciting game in the state in 1980-81 “All of the players on the 1980-81 season were exceptional in their own right. Each did his job to make it a very successful sea- son. The three seniors finished out a tremen- dous 3 year career that included 56 wins, 3 sectionals, 2 conferences, 2 holiday tour- neys, and 1 regional championship, as well as being rated in the top 20 for two con- secutive years. Many times it simply was making mistakes when they could hurt the most, Two players were moved up to the Junior Varsity-Dave Kampenga and Mike Hudson. - Coach Metzger A new school record (19-1) was set by the 1981 JV Kougar team. They also were the champs of the Christmas tourney. Coach Gross comments on his team: As a team, we outscored our opponents on the average by 18 points per game, and we also held them under 30 poinls 8 times. Along with setting a new school record for wins and losses, this year we achieved much more excellent team defense, outrebound- ed, shot more accurately, and passed the ball better tha n any other team we played. All these skills will benefit all the young men for play at the varsity level next year.”- Coach Bob Gross Awards were receied as follows Most Rebounds- 136-Greg Jones Most Assists-64-Scott Ganzeveld Best Field Goal Average-83%-Scott Ganzeveld Thanks to Coach Metzger and Coach Gross for all their time and effort in supplying us with the above information. Everyone expected us to win the sectional again, said Miiller, “but few expected us to do it so easily. The team, he added, played better than it had to. He said of Hanover Central: “They refused to play basketball even when they were behind by as many as twenty points. The Kougars coasted by the Bombers, and the championship game was the best they played all year. It was their third consecu- tive sectional win and the fourth in the past five years. The game they played at semi-state was a great exper- ience for the team even though they lost, said Miiller. “The guys played very well all season, and we have every rea- son in the world to be proud of our basketball team, Miiller said.
